Easy Berry Chia Seed Jam
Forget that you ever heard about jam being unhealthy.
I never thought making homemade jam could be so easy... and good for you! I always thought I'd have to add loads of sugar and some kind of thickening agent. I was so wrong.
This recipe has no added sugar and it really doesn't need it. The sweetness comes naturally from the berries and the thickening comes naturally from the chia seeds that gel from the juices released by the berries when they thaw.
Dietitian's recommendation: I recommend using organic berries if you can. Each year the Environmental Working Group updates their list of the Dirty Dozen which outlines the foods most contaminated by pesticide use, and every year some kind of berry has made it to the top of this list.
Enjoy this jam on toast, on oatmeal to naturally sweeten, or in your plant-yogurt and granola parfait in the morning completely guilt free. It's loaded with antioxidants, fiber, minerals, vitamins and omega-3 fats from the chia seeds.
Dietitian's Recommendation: because this jam is made at home without any preservatives, it'll last only up to 5 days unlike the store-bought variety that can last months. But guaranteed you'll finish it before then, and given how easy it is to make you'll be making your next batch before the week is up!
I don't think I can ever go back to store-bought jam after this. And it's a versatile recipe too! Change up the frozen berries and even try adding frozen mango or peach if you'd like. The options seem endless.

Easy Berry Chia Seed Jam
▸ ▹ Vegan, raw, gluten-free, oil-free, refined sugar-free, nut-free
Yield: approx. 1.5 cups Prep Time: 5 min Total Time: 35 min
1 cup frozen raspberries (or other frozen berry)*
1 cup frozen blueberries (or other frozen berry)*
2 Tbsp chia seeds
1 Tbsp apple juice (or sub orange juice)
Place the berries in a medium bowl and microwave** for about 3 minutes, stopping to stir every minute. After this berries should be defrosted and some juice will be released. Remove from the microwave and smash with a fork until more juices seep out, but some chunks remain.
Add the chia seeds and juice, and stir to combine. Let sit at room temperature for 30 minutes for the chia seeds to gel, stirring once halfway.
Store in an airtight container and enjoy with toast, on oatmeal, in breakfast parfaits, and more!
* Using frozen berries are preferred to fresh because they release some juice when defrosted - this juice is then absorbed by the chia seeds to gel.
** My microwave was set to 600W, so if yours is at a different setting you may need to microwave it for shorter or longer - keep an eye on it.
** If you prefer not to microwave (for raw recipe), you can simple combine all ingredients in the bowl and let sit at room temperature for about 3 hours, stirring occasionally for the chia seeds to absorb the juice.
Variations: you can use any berries you’d like, although I think this combination is amazing! For extra sweetness, add up to 1 Tbsp agave syrup or maple syrup.
Speed-it-up: microwaving to defrost the berries speeds of the process.
Storage: store in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
