Have some bread that's going stale? Making your own croutons is a great way to use up any less-than-stellar bread, and this crouton recipe always impresses! They are irresistible on soups, and also a pleasant thing to snack on while cooking.

Ingredients

  • 4
    slices whole wheat bread
  • 2 Tbsp (30 mL)
    olive oil
  • 1
    clove garlic, crushed (optional)
  • 1 tsp (3 g)
    garlic powder
  • 1 tsp (2 g)
    onion powder
  • 1 tsp (2 g)
    paprika powder
  • 1 tsp (1 g)
  • 1 pinch
    salt
  • 1 pinch
    ground black pepper

Directions

Click:

  1. Slice or tear the bread into 1 cm cubes.
  2. Pan-fried version: heat the oil in a large frying pan on high heat. Add the bread cubes and all the remaining ingredients. Pan fry for 4 - 5 minutes, stirring often until the croutons are golden and crispy.
  3. Oven-baked version: preheat the oven to 390°F (200°C). Toss the bread cubes, oil, garlic, and spices together on a parchment-lined baking tray, and bake for 5 - 7 minutes, mixing once or twice until the croutons are golden.

This is such a simple recipe and they taste soo much better than the store-bought croutons. I also like that it gives me a chance to do something with the leftover loaves of fresh bread that I buy. Plus everyone is always very impressed that I made my own croutons. 😂😂

I made the oven-baked version and they came put really crispy, although I burned them a little! 😄

So glad you enjoyed them although they burned a bit, Cris! Ovens can be tricky so we recommend keeping a close eye on them or turning the heat down if needed 😃
