Classic Garlic & Lemon Hummus

Homemade staple

One-bowl / one-pot

Hummus is a classic for a reason. This is a go-to hummus recipe. It's a great spread for sandwiches, wraps, and crackers. It's a phenomenal dip for veggies. It can be used as a base for pasta sauces and salad dressings, and it can be dolloped onto nourish bowls. Is there anything it can't do?

    olive oil

  1. Add all of the ingredients, except for the water, to a food processor and blend on high, stopping occasionally to scrape the sides. Continue until a smooth consistency is achieved. The longer it's left to blend, the smoother it becomes.
  2. While the mixture is blending, in a thin and steady stream, add the cold water to the food processor. The colder the water is, the better. We often add an ice cube to ours to chill it, although this is not necessary. Adding the water in this way while the mixture blends helps to aerate the hummus and make it more 'fluffy'. If desired, though, the water can simply be added with the ingredients in step #1, and this step can be skipped.
  3. Taste test the hummus. If you’d like the consistency to be creamier, add more olive oil and/or tahini. If you’d like more zest, add more lemon juice.
  4. Plate, garnish, and serve!

  • * Consider using only 1 garlic clove if you aren't too fond of garlicky hummus.
  • This recipe is a lovely one to make-ahead, to enjoy in sandwiches and wraps throughout the week!

Sadia, Thanks for sharing the easiest way to make this delicious hummus! Perfect hummus recipe.

PUL Team - Sept. 27, 2021, 11:30 p.m.

Aww, thank YOU, Crystal! It means so much 😃

Anna - Sept. 22, 2021, 12:18 a.m.

Best hummus yet, but unfortunately my food processor isn’t strong enough to make it store bought- smooth. Should I boil the canned chickpeas for it? Any tips?

PUL Team - Sept. 22, 2021, 5:01 a.m.

Hi Anna, thank you for sharing! Canned chickpeas are already cooked, so boiling them further may not help too much. Adding more liquid (such as water) or allowing the mixture to blend for longer should help with smoothness if your food processor isn't powerful enough ☺️

L - Sept. 9, 2021, 7:13 p.m.

Can you please provide a text only version of the recipe for printing as well?

PUL Team - Sept. 12, 2021, 2:42 a.m.

Hey L, thanks a bunch for the request. Just below the directions and storage information, you should see a green "print" button. When you click this it'll take you to a print page where you can uncheck the image from printing on the left side of the screen and adjust the printing font size if desired. I hope this helps for now 😊

Thank you!

Aa'ishah - Sept. 9, 2021, 4:18 p.m.

Does anyone know approximately how many mls the juice of the lemon should be?

PUL Team - Sept. 12, 2021, 2:15 a.m.

Hey there, Aa'ishah, thanks for the question! One lemon yields approximately 30 mL (2 tbsp) of lemon juice 🙂

Emily - Sept. 4, 2021, 7:22 p.m.

I love this hummus. I enjoy with experimenting with different types of hummus but it is always nice to return to the good old classic version and this is my go to recipe. I do think you should post your artisan hummus recipe from the previous blog on here as well though as that was epic!

PUL Team - Sept. 5, 2021, 3:01 a.m.

Been a few emails re: the artisan hummus if you wanted to consider posting it :)

We're so glad the hummus has been enjoyed, Emily! We appreciate the feedback for the artisan hummus as well. We wanted to make some small adjustments to that recipe, and hope to do it soon and repost 🤞 Thanks for letting us know it's of interest 😊

My favorite homemade hummus recipe! It's flavorful, creamy without adding extra amounts of oil. I use it again and again.

Made the classic garlic & lemon hummus today, and it's just the best! 😋 🥰 I additionally added some cumin and smoked paprika for some more flavors 😊 The cold water really worked nicely, thank you so much for sharing these recipes 💙

monica - Aug. 1, 2021, 1:33 a.m.

This is really really good. I don't have a food processor so I use a blender and it still works.

Madi - July 25, 2021, 11:54 p.m.

This is such a good recipe. I’ve made it twice now. The first time I added a little smoked paprika and the second time some sun dried tomatoes and topped with a little Trader Joe’s sofrito mix. Fantastic both times!

Mmm love these ideas, Madi, thanks a bunch for sharing ☺️

Sana Singh - July 21, 2021, 2:15 p.m.

Hi Sadia,
Considering that I have had a love-hate relationship with hummus, this recipe is a game-changer and I am officially a hummus lover.

Unrelated but true, I am on my journey to understanding PCOS and developing a lifestyle that suits me. Chickpeas being a great source of plant-based protein, this recipe helps me create snacks that heal rather than harm me. Thank you so much!

Your website and YouTube Channel are a vital part of my de-stress routine! Your videos calms me down. So glad Pick Up Limes exists.

A fan from India,

PUL Team - July 22, 2021, 6:15 a.m.

Dearest Sana, thank you for sharing your kind words with us! It means so much and we're so happy to have you in our PUL family. So glad you enjoyed the recipe 😃

Tetiana - July 10, 2021, 10:02 a.m.

We always eat bread for breakfast (living in Germany you learn to eat bread any time of the day :D). This hummus is very yummy on toasted bread!

Clémentine - July 10, 2021, 1:05 a.m.

It has become a staple in my house, I love this recipe !

whalo - July 8, 2021, 11:45 p.m.

Best hummus recipe! It's so refreshing and satisfying, it works in so many recipes, and I have received nothing but compliments when friends/family try it. :)

Victoria - July 8, 2021, 10:21 p.m.

Nice basic hummus, a bit less thick than traditional, so I would do half the water if you like your hummus thicker.

Daphné - July 8, 2021, 6:17 p.m.

My "Go to" recipe for a perfect hummus <3

Safiya - June 26, 2021, 4 p.m.

Cris S - June 5, 2021, 5:48 p.m.

Always love a good old hummus! 😁 Thanks for adapting these recipes so that they are healthier!

rachel - June 1, 2021, 2:24 p.m.

hey! wondering if i can make this hummus using a hand blender or ninja cup....

PUL Team - June 5, 2021, 6:42 p.m.

Hey Rachel, that’s a great question! We wouldn't recommend a hand blender as your hand blender could break. Your ninja cup may work if you find it powerful enough and break up the recipe portions though! If you hear any weird sounds or smell anything unexpected, it likely would be best to stop blending though ✨🤗

Michael Aanraad - May 24, 2021, 9:34 a.m.

I'm thinking of making the shell hummus pasta with this one. Any idea how much hummus this recipe yields in grams? I'm thinking slightly more than the grams of chickpeas used? Thanks! Love your recipes!

PUL Team - May 24, 2021, 8:48 p.m.

Hey Michael, wonderful thinking! It should be around 1.5 cups or 370 grams per recipe although it may vary slightly depending on some factors, such as how big the garlic cloves used are, how much lemon juice is used, etc. We hope you love the hummus pasta 😃

Manon - April 19, 2021, 10:39 a.m.

I love this recipe! I have tried many recipes but this one is by far my favourite!

PUL Team - April 20, 2021, 4:36 a.m.

We appreciate this so much, Manon!

Isa-Bella Leclair - April 15, 2021, 9:54 p.m.

My boyfriend usually makes hummus for us for the week, he just wings it and always does something different. This week we didn't have time to do it over the weekend but I had time to do some while he was working. I was stressed that it wouldn't turn out as good as his but I followed this recipe and it turned out so so good, topped it off with a bit of olive oil and paprika to dip pita in and it was great, my boyfriend even said "it's sooo good, I want more" after we finished our snack.

PUL Team - April 19, 2021, 1:46 a.m.

We're so glad you and your boyfriend enjoyed the hummus, Isa-Bella Leclair! Thank you for sharing 😄

Lynne - April 11, 2021, 2:09 a.m.

Can't wait to try these hummus recipes! What kind of crackers do you like for this? They look very healthy and good crackers are so hard to find as they all have bad oils in them.

PUL Team - April 14, 2021, 8:39 p.m.

Hey Lynne! We made them ourselves - they were just some cut-up pita with a bit of olive oil and some herbs. Then we toasted them in the oven until crispy 😊

Louise Magnusson🇸🇪 - March 29, 2021, 10:11 a.m.

Classic is simply the best😋 Sometimes at least 😅
Seriously, this hummus is really fresh and works so well for an afternoon snack (fika!!). I added a 1/4-1/2 teaspoon of ground cumin for default servings, which pop up the lemon and garlic flavours. I love PUL’s hummus and I crave for more 🤣😉

PUL Team - April 2, 2021, 11:52 p.m.

We love a classic hummus as well! Thank you for taking the time to leave a lovely review, Louise 🥰
