Cherry Oatmeal

When creating this recipe we had the idea that it should be possible to enjoy this deliciously sweet breakfast without access to the fridge and minimal ingredients. So it's perfect to make while camping. The oatmeal is sweet, has a beautiful purple colour and is very satiating.

I couldn’t find ready made cherry pie filling where I live, too, so I decided to test simmering with starch as proposed. (What I could get was cherries in pre-sweetened liquid, so I thickened that, but skipped adding more sugar or sirup.)

It was really, really yummy 🍒 Loved the chocolate topping with it!

What is cherry pie filling?

Hiii Clem! Cherry pie filling is a sweetened mixture of cherries cooked with a thickened syrup, similar to what you'd use to fill a cherry pie 🥧 We often find it in the baking aisle or canned fruit section of our grocery stores. If you can't find it, you could also make a quick version by simmering pitted cherries with a little sugar (or another sweetener) and a cornstarch slurry until thickened. Hope this helps 🍒
