This flavour-packed hummus is delicious on its own, but it's also great on sandwiches or wraps. The caramelized bell pepper and garlic are muted in their intensity, and add a lovely sweetness to this hummus.

Ingredients

  • 2
red bell peppers, seeds removed, cut in halves
  • 6
    cloves garlic, unpeeled
  • 1 Tbsp (15 mL)
    olive oil
  • 2 cups (328 g)
    cooked chickpeas
  • 3 Tbsp (45 mL)
  • 1
    lemon, juiced
  • 1 Tbsp (15 mL)
olive oil, or more if desired
  • 1 Tbsp (15 mL)
    cold water
  • 2 tsp (10 mL)
  • ½ tsp
    paprika powder
  • ½ tsp
    salt

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 450Β°F (250Β°C). Add the bell peppers and garlic to a lined baking tray. Toss with oil, and bake for 25 minutes, or until the bell peppers are lightly charred. Flip the bell peppers once halfway.
  2. Remove any charred bits of skin off the bell pepper. Remove the peel from the garlic cloves. Place all the ingredients in a food processor and blend on high until creamy.
  3. If you'd like the hummus even creamier, add more olive oil and/or tahini. If you'd like the hummus to be zestier, add more lemon juice. Plate, garnish, and serve!

Love this! Just made some and my 2 boys (toddler and 10 month old) are enjoying some with chia/quinoa chips and a baby cracker lol how long does this keep in the fridge?

PUL Team - April 13, 2024, 4:39 a.m.

Aww sending lots of love to your two little ones, Andie! You can store the hummus in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. In case you haven't seen yet and it helps in the future, the storage instructions on the app are in the directions tab and the last slide of the "Make" step-by-step instructions 😊

Andie - April 13, 2024, 3:18 p.m.

Thanks a bunch!

Pearl - Feb. 23, 2024, 12:01 p.m.

We (my husband, our 3 year old son, and I) love this red pepper hummus! πŸ’“

Amanda - Dec. 11, 2023, 3:46 a.m.

Delicious! Love the addition of Cajun powder. Just perfect, thank you!

Elina - Dec. 4, 2023, 4:57 p.m.

The hummus of my life! First hummus ever made and now the only one I eat frequently. It's sooooo good 🀀

Tina - Nov. 4, 2023, 10:02 p.m.

Very nice!

Martunia - Sept. 22, 2023, 11:14 a.m.

Not enough salt in this one, in my opinion plus it came out rather runny, even though I added 25g more chickpeas than the recipe called for. Other than that, it's a great dip for crackers and crisps.

Pearl - Sept. 20, 2023, 11:33 a.m.

Yummy! Love it! And my little toddler too! πŸ₯°

Wayne Davies - July 23, 2023, 11:11 p.m.

Just made it. Yummy. I don’t need to buy it anymore. Recipe made around 600g in total which is 3 store size tubs which generallly cost around Β£4.50 for that much. So much cheaper making it yourself.

PUL Team - July 26, 2023, 10:36 p.m.

Yayy so happy to hear, Wayne, enjoy the hummus!

Carolien S - April 16, 2023, 7:22 p.m.

Lovely

Pushpita - Jan. 6, 2023, 8:01 p.m.

Can I leave out balsamic vinegar or is there a specific role it plays?

PUL Team - Jan. 7, 2023, 11:27 a.m.

Hey Pushpita, you can definitely omit it. It offers some acidity, so if you taste test it and feel it could use some more zing, just add a bit of lemon juice :)

Margriet - Sept. 12, 2022, 3:52 p.m.

Nice recipe! I don't know why, but my batch was quite sour. Next time, I will not add all of the lemon juice and vinegar right away but instead taste and add bit by bit. Thanks PUL :)

PUL Team - Sept. 14, 2022, 5:47 p.m.

Hey Margriet, using fresh medium-sized lemon (rather than more sour or larger varieties) and fresh tahini can help! Adding it bit by bit is also a lovely idea. We hope you enjoy it πŸ™‚

Kathleen - Sept. 10, 2022, 3:25 a.m.

This sounds so delicious! I've printed to make today, no more store bought hummus in this home! Thanks so much x

PUL Team - Sept. 11, 2022, 3:43 a.m.

Woohoo! It means so much, Kathleen πŸ˜ƒ

Sarah Amato - July 13, 2022, 5:57 a.m.

This recipe was so delicious!!! I’m a hummus lover, and usually buy store-bought hummus but this hummus was everything and more than store-bought hummus. I’m planning on making the beetroot hummus next thank you, for sharing this delicious recipe.

PUL Team - July 13, 2022, 6:29 a.m.

Aw we're so happy to hear, Sarah, and we hope you enjoy the beetroot hummus!

Steph - May 19, 2022, 8:36 a.m.

I can't believe how much tasty hummus this made! Looking forward to enjoying it all week... Although it probably won't last that long! πŸ˜‚ Thanks PUL πŸŽ‰

PUL Team - May 20, 2022, 1:11 a.m.

Hehe so glad the hummus is being enjoyed, Steph!

Sana - March 30, 2022, 1:58 p.m.

can this be freezed?

PUL Team - March 30, 2022, 4:25 p.m.

Hey Sana, we haven't tested it out recently but find that hummus is best enjoyed fresh. You could freeze it in an air-tight container if desired though, the texture and flavour will likely just change slightly as the oil separates πŸ™‚

Sara - March 27, 2022, 5:58 p.m.

Such an easy and approachable recipe for something that tastes sooo good. Thanks ☺️

PUL Team - March 27, 2022, 9:42 p.m.

Aw it means so much, Sara, thank you 😊

Bonnie - March 6, 2022, 6:53 p.m.

The Red Pepper Hummus recipe is tasty and not to hard to make. This is the first time I have made it myself, too.

PUL Team - March 7, 2022, 6:16 a.m.

We're so glad it's being enjoyed, Bonnie, thank you πŸ˜ƒ

Yalda - March 2, 2022, 8:20 p.m.

Okay...WOW!
This was my first time ever making Hummus. It was originally meant for tomorrow's breakfast sandwich but.... hehe. Once I had finished mixing and started taste testing, I spent a good 20 mins just snacking from my bowl with bread, cucumbers etc. :D I'm not complaining though, it's so so so delicious :)

PUL Team - March 2, 2022, 11:26 p.m.

Hey there, Yalda, how exciting to make hummus for the first time! We're so glad it was enjoyed πŸ˜ƒ

Lotus - Jan. 25, 2022, 8:14 p.m.

So happy to hear, Lotus! Hugs to you and your mother ❣️

Giselle - Jan. 24, 2022, 5:52 p.m.

I have tried this with red and yellow peppers and even tried one of your beetroot hummus recipies and they turned out really nice. Its such a good way to make use of veggies in your diet. Thank you for sharing :)

PUL Team - Jan. 26, 2022, 6:40 a.m.

We're so thrilled it's being enjoyed, Giselle, thank you!

Sarah - Oct. 11, 2021, 5:28 p.m.

I have never attempted to make Hummus from scratch do I have a question. How long to you cook the Chickpeas? Do you just boil them? I love Hummus and would love to have fresh available whenever I wanted it!

PUL Team - Oct. 11, 2021, 11:14 p.m.

Hello Sarah, thanks for the question! Canned chickpeas are already cooked so only a good rinse is necessary before using them. If cooking dry chickpeas, usually giving them a soak and then cooking them covered with around 2 inches of water above the top of the beans works well. The exact time, heat, and amount of water may depend on the soak time, cooking method, and amount being made. There are lots of recipes online in case that will help further. We hope you enjoy the hummus if you're able to give it a try πŸ˜ƒ

Jenifer - July 29, 2021, 1:29 a.m.

So good! I garnished it with toasted pine nuts, some finely chopped roasted red pepper, ground oregano and a little more paprika. Great flavor and very pretty presentation!

PUL Team - July 29, 2021, 7:16 p.m.

Mmm sounds delicious, Jenifer, we're so glad you enjoyed the hummus ☺️

Petra - July 24, 2021, 10:21 p.m.

Dora - July 24, 2021, 6:17 p.m.

Haven’t bought hummus ever since I’ve tried this recipe, it’s my go to. Even my super picky brother loves it, so so so yummy! 🌱🀍

How incredible to hear, Dora, so glad you're enjoying the hummus πŸ˜ƒ

AlexandraP - July 23, 2021, 7:40 a.m.

This is a simple and amazingly tasty hummus! Love this. Anyone be able to do it! πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‹

Victoria - July 8, 2021, 10:18 p.m.

Slightly sweet hummus. It used up the entire jar of roasted peppers! I think I still prefer your beet and avocado hummus better.

PUL Team - July 12, 2021, 7:53 a.m.

Thank you for taking the time to share, Victoria! So glad you've been able to test out some of the PUL hummus recipes :)

Cris S - June 5, 2021, 5:47 p.m.

Simone - May 18, 2021, 5:35 p.m.

Just tried this delicious recipe, my first self-made hummus ever and I m absolutely enthusiastic about it. So creamy, and the flavour of the roasted bell pepper gives it a great and special twist and taste to the traditional hummus. Not expensive and easy to make....successful the first time (I m not the most talented cook ;) ) Thank you for the recipe!

PUL Team - May 22, 2021, 5:32 a.m.

Thank you for the glowing review, Simone! We have plenty of other recipes if you'd like to practice your cooking skills πŸ˜‰πŸ€—

Louise MagnussonπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ͺ - May 11, 2021, 4:53 a.m.

I did like Agate: I used roasted bell peppers from a jar. So convenient without compromising the taste. Love this variation with bell pepper and garlic as well as the balance between sweet, sour, and umami. I really need to add more salt when I make your hummus recipes, as I use a brand that doesn’t add salt to their canned chickpeas... Which is very good thoughπŸ‘πŸΌ

PUL Team - May 11, 2021, 5:43 a.m.

Thank you for the incredible review, Louise! We're so thrilled you enjoyed the hummus ✨πŸ₯°

Caitlin - April 18, 2021, 10:18 p.m.

This is honestly the best hummus I've ever made! It has the perfect, balanced flavour and texture, makes a big batch, and is so easy to make! Thank you so much for the recipe!

PUL Team - April 20, 2021, 1:30 a.m.

An incredible compliment, Caitlin! So happy you're enjoying the hummus :)

Agate - March 22, 2021, 8:41 a.m.

Love this recipe! Its also quite quick, if your local store has roasted bell peppers in a jar. My recommendation though - don't be afraid to adjust seasoning to your taste buds. I typically add more lemon juice and add more salt in the form of soy sauce. After discovering this recipe I have stopped buying ready-made hummus - this is way more delicious and cheaper!

Sadia - March 29, 2021, 4:27 p.m.

Aw so glad you're enjoying it, Agate - and absolutely! The beauty in hummus is adjusting the spice and zest to your liking πŸ‹πŸ˜Š
