If I wasn’t drinking milk as a kid, I was drinking juice. I was a super active child so I needed the carbs to keep me going. My favourites were grape, cranberry, and tropical mixes (orange, pineapple, mango and that sort).
But giving children juice is a hot-topic nowadays, which was not as much a concern when I was growing up. Most people feel it’s too high in calories and sugar, while others continue to feel it’s a great way to provide adolescents with essential vitamins and minerals who don’t otherwise obtain it from (the lack of) fruits and vegetables in their diets.
It should go without saying whole foods are the best. Smoothies are preferable to juices because the fiber is retained, whereas it is extracted and discarded with juices. With juices, you lack the benefits from fibre and can easily drink way more than when consumed in smoothie or whole-food form.
So then why would I share juice recipes?
Do you know of any beet, grapefruit and spinach juices available at the market? I sure don’t. When making your own juice you decide what ingredients you want to add and what flavour profile you want to create. Isn’t that reason enough?
Besides, what you create is fresh, has retained nutrients because it hasn’t been heated to high temperature (pasteurized) and there is control over what is added or not added (in other words: no added preservatives, added sugars or added colouring agents).
This is a great antioxidant-rich drink to have if feeling like you're feeling the onset of a cold. I personally enjoy the earthy and citrus taste of this juice on its own, even when feeling at my best. Serve up a cold glass for yourself or loved one - they won't even know the greens were there with this vibrant red colour and citrus taste.
