  • 2 tsp (10 mL)
    olive oil
  • 1
    small onion, sliced
  • 1
    clove garlic, crushed
  • 1
    yellow bell pepper, chopped
  • 1½ cups (255 g)
    cooked butter beans
  • 10
    cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 2 Tbsp (30 mL)
    harissa sauce, more to taste
  • ¼ tsp
  • ⅛ tsp
    ground black pepper
  • ½
    lemon, juiced
  • ½ cup (120 mL)
    unsweetened coconut yogurt
  • ½
    avocado, sliced (optional)
  • 2
    small pita breads, toasted

  1. Heat a large pan on medium-high heat and add the oil, onion, garlic, and bell pepper. Cook for 3 - 4 minutes, until softened.
  2. Add the beans, tomatoes, and harissa*, and cook for 3 - 4 minutes. Deglaze the pan with a small splash of water if necessary.
  3. Season with salt and pepper, and stir in the lemon juice.
  4. Divide the coconut yogurt between your plates, top with the harissa beans, some avocado slices, and serve with toasted pita. Enjoy!

  • * Harissa offers a deep tangy and spicy flavour, but add less if you'd prefer less heat.

  • The beans can be stored separately from the other components in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Serena Di Sabatino Di Diodoro - April 7, 2024, 3:21 p.m.

Unfortunately I found the flavour of the dish not too well balanced. Yogurt and lemon juice made it super acidic 🤷‍♀️ but it might be only my taste I don’t know.

PUL Team - April 8, 2024, 11:59 p.m.

Hey Serena, in case it helps sometimes there's a variation from brand to brand for yogurt. Ours is a very natural and neutral-tasting variety by the brand Alpro :)

Kim Tee - March 21, 2024, 7:26 a.m.

So good. So easy! I didn't have harissa so used yellow curry paste. Looking forward to trying it with harissa next. This one's going onto the frequent rotation list.

Thomas - Aug. 21, 2023, 11:48 a.m.

Thanks for sharing - this is definitely a keeper! So quick and easy and very flavorful.

The heat was a bit too much for my taste so I’ll be adjusting the amount of harissa next time. ;)

joyce - Aug. 20, 2023, 7:19 p.m.

Just made. I’m fasting so I won’t get to enjoy until tomorrow . It should be soaked in spices by then. I used 4 tbsp. Of the harissa sauce. I love spicy and hot. OMG! So quick and to make. Thank you!

Super quick and tasty.

Abby - June 25, 2023, 11:45 p.m.

Harissa sauce isn't sold in stores here, is there a substitute I can use?

PUL Team - June 27, 2023, 7:24 a.m.

Hey Abby! We've heard positive reviews for chili flakes, fresh chili, curry paste, and general tomato-based sauces in place of harissa in this one. We hope you enjoy the recipe if you're able to give it a try 🤗

Anja - April 25, 2023, 4:08 a.m.

Christina - April 24, 2023, 2:34 p.m.

Hi pick-up limes! I love your youtube channel and your recipes! I tried this one but I replaced the beans with chickpeas, and it was delicious! So simple but full of flavor. I added tomato paste and a bit more spices (paprika, smoked paprika, chili powder and chili flakes) and it added a lot more flavor (recommend you try it!)
Thanks for the inspiration!
- christina

PUL Team - April 24, 2023, 6:44 p.m.

Mmm sounds delicious! Thanks for sharing your experience with the recipe, Christina 😃

Martunia - March 17, 2023, 9:07 a.m.

So spicy! I made it for breakfast this morning and I can still feel the pleasant burn in my mouth 🙃 the yogurt and avocado mellow down the flavor a bit and the pita adds a perfect crunch.

Zoe Turi - Feb. 26, 2023, 3:41 p.m.

The flavors hit just right! I’ve made this dish so often during winter, especially after a long day at work when I don’t want to spend a ton of time cooking, and it’s satisfying and delicious every time. When I don’t have harissa, I use curry paste, and everyone is still happy.

PUL Team - Feb. 26, 2023, 8:11 p.m.

A lovely idea to use curry paste, Zoe, thank you!

Julia - Feb. 9, 2023, 7:24 p.m.

I already made this a bunch of times and it is one of my favourite weeknight dinner recipes! I always substitute the harissa paste with a spice mix, though.

PUL Team - Feb. 9, 2023, 11:02 p.m.

So happy it's being enjoyed, Julia, thank you!

Chiara - Feb. 9, 2023, 5:35 p.m.

This is my new favourite meal, I prepear it all the time! In the winter months I usually use canned tomatoes instead of the fresh ones. :) It is so quick to prepear and tastes amazing.

PUL Team - Feb. 9, 2023, 10:38 p.m.

Thank you for taking the time to share, Chiara 😃

Smith - Jan. 31, 2023, 2:29 a.m.

Super easy and flavorful! Perfect for a weekday dinner

Shona - Jan. 23, 2023, 8:05 p.m.

Absolutely delicious and so quick and easy to make! I served mine with brown rice and quinoa. I’ll cook kale as a side for leftovers tomorrow

PUL Team - Jan. 25, 2023, 4:40 p.m.

Mmm sounds delicious, Shona, enjoy!

Nowa - Jan. 12, 2023, 6:36 p.m.

This has become one of my go-to recipes! I often have it as a sandwich when I'm travelling (then minus the yoghurt) and it's packed with flavour and protein :)

PUL Team - Jan. 14, 2023, 9:59 p.m.

Oh so lovely, Nowa, we appreciate the kind words!

Juls - Jan. 11, 2023, 8:36 p.m.

I am a student that doesn't know how to cook but I started following your recipes and they are so easy to make, super tasty and fast! Thank you so much for this! I really love it 🤩. My uni years are being filled with lovely food !

P.S I also looovvee that you have the videos attached to the recipes ...I often don't know how to proceed and the videos help me a lot .

Continue the super nice work 🥰

PUL Team - Jan. 13, 2023, 10:49 p.m.

Aw thank you for the glowing feedback, Juls, it means so much! Wishing you all the best in your studies and beyond 🤗

Amy - Dec. 11, 2022, 11:55 p.m.

I just tried this tonight! I did not have harissa so I substituted with chili flakes and fresh chili. It was unbelievably delicious, I'm still thinking about it haha Will try it again with harissa :)

PUL Team - Dec. 12, 2022, 12:04 a.m.

Woohoo! So lovely to hear, Amy, thank you 😊

Joan - Nov. 20, 2022, 3:24 p.m.

This recipe was quick, easy and delicious. I made it exactly as written except I had harissa powder, not sauce, and plain yogurt. I will definitely be making this again.

PUL Team - Nov. 20, 2022, 8:54 p.m.

A lovely substitution, Joan - thanks a bunch :D

Małgorzata - Jan. 15, 2023, 8:09 p.m.

I also have harissa powder at home and I was wondering if I can swap sauce to powder and how much should I use it? Is it replaceable 1:1 ? Any advice? :)

PUL Team - Jan. 16, 2023, 12:38 a.m.

Hey Małgorzata, we haven't tried it ourselves but we have seen some recipes that use equal parts water or oil and harissa powder as a substitute for sauce. For example, 1 tbsp water and 1 tbsp powder for 2 servings of this recipe. Just in case, we'd recommend starting with less and adding more to taste as needed. Joan may also have some insight 😃

Małgorzata - Jan. 17, 2023, 11:09 a.m.

Thanks for the reply :) I'll try that

Frances - Oct. 20, 2022, 1:34 a.m.

PUL Team - Oct. 20, 2022, 6:25 p.m.

So glad it's being enjoyed, Frances!

Tiara - Oct. 8, 2022, 10:38 p.m.

Made this last night love the flavor ! I never knew harissa was a hidden gem thanks for this recipe !!

Darya - Sept. 11, 2022, 3:33 p.m.

Thank you for such a lovely recipe :) I was short on some ingredients, so replaced lemon, spices and harissa with peanut butter, sweetened almond milk and local spicy tomato paste. Surprisingly it worked well! Also garnished with rice instead of bread. And I'll definitely try your original recipe.

PUL Team - Sept. 12, 2022, 4:45 p.m.

Mmm sounds delicious, Darya! We hope you enjoy the original recipe as well if you're able to give it a try 😃

Jace - Aug. 27, 2022, 5:53 a.m.

Man oh man this one hit the spot!! I didn’t have pita bread so I made the tortilla naan from your potato and spinach curry recipe… it worked perfectly with this dish! Thank you PUL!

PUL Team - Aug. 28, 2022, 7:51 p.m.

Oh we're smiling from ear to ear, Jace, thank you!

Amy - Aug. 7, 2022, 8:11 p.m.

Tried it for it's speed and cost. Soooooo goooooood. This is a new weekly fav! Love your recipes.

PUL Team - Aug. 6, 2022, 6:58 p.m.

Woohoo! Thank you, Scaff 😃

Gesa - Aug. 3, 2022, 9:12 a.m.

Thank you so much! This was so easy and delicious. I Thought I didn't have anything for a wholesome and protein-rich breakfast at home but I really wanted a good start for the morning before leaving the house. I had an avocado but didn't feel inspired. Just quickly browsing your page changed that immediately and I ended up super happy and nourished with this awesome breakfast. Now I leave the house happy to do my tasks for the day. Thank you so much for ongoing inspirations!

PUL Team - Aug. 3, 2022, 4:32 p.m.

Awe it means so much, Gesa, thank YOU for the glowing review and support 💛

Dagmar - July 7, 2022, 5:58 p.m.

This is my go-to quick recipe for every guest that I try to convince wholesome vegan food can be good.
I get positive reactions every time.
Today I had no bell pepper, so I added bamboo shoots. Worked just as well!

PUL Team - July 8, 2022, 12:28 a.m.

So happy to hear, Dagmar, and love the addition of bamboo shoots!

MC - June 28, 2022, 9:13 p.m.

I made it and just a heads up that if you're not a spicy person, just put 1 TBSP of the Harissa. OMG, it was so spicy for me but my husband liked it. He even liked it better when we had it for leftovers! Fun to try a new recipe :)

PUL Team - June 29, 2022, 2:10 a.m.

Hey there, MC, thanks a bunch for the feedback! It's so appreciated to help us improve. We've added a short note on the spice level to help others avoid too much spice. So glad it was still enjoyed 🙂

Megan - June 27, 2022, 4:34 p.m.

This recipe blew my mind. It's one of my new favorites. So cheap and quick, and soooooooooooo delicious.

PUL Team - June 28, 2022, 2:32 a.m.

A huge compliment, Megan, we're so happy to hear!

Jen - June 27, 2022, 10:44 a.m.

Absolutely loved this. My new go-to on a midweek night when I think there's no food in the house.

PUL Team - June 27, 2022, 3:10 p.m.

We're so glad the spiced beans are being enjoyed, Jen!

Andrea - June 15, 2022, 9:38 p.m.

So gooooood and filling. Always keep some beans in my pantry for this one!

PUL Team - June 17, 2022, 7:33 a.m.

It means so much, Andrea, thank you!

Madison - June 15, 2022, 4:40 a.m.

Such a great, easy, and flavorful meal idea! We halved the harissa to make it less spicy and it was still so flavorful! Definitely saving this one for future use.

PUL Team - June 16, 2022, 6:53 a.m.

A lovely modification, Madison - we're so thrilled it's being enjoyed!

Sam - June 12, 2022, 7:52 p.m.

Tried this recipe last night, and it is SO GOOD. It's easy and quick to make and also super flavourful. Will definitely be making this again.

PUL Team - June 15, 2022, 8:17 p.m.

Woop woop! So happy to hear, Sam, thank you 😊

Danielle - May 24, 2022, 3:23 p.m.

I just had to return and leave another comment as this dish has become a firm favourite in our house and I've been making it at least twice a week since discovering it! I've continued to add mushrooms and substitute the bell pepper for a poblano. I like to cook the onion/mushroom/poblano mixture down until the mushrooms get a hint of gold and the onions and poblano become a little jammy. It's so tasty that I'm salivating even just writing about it; I honestly can't recommend this recipe highly enough! 😊

PUL Team - May 24, 2022, 6:41 p.m.

This sounds divine, Danielle! Thank you for the glowing feedback 🤤

Amira - May 23, 2022, 11 p.m.

Made this as a Monday night dinner because I finally did my food shop and realised how much nutrition and wellness my body is lacking. Decided to meal prep for the week and started off with this lovely beans. This was so, so delicious I'm literally obsessed and I'm going to make it all the time. Thank you always to Sadia and the PUL Team that pull through!

PUL Team - May 24, 2022, 3:43 a.m.

Aw it means so much more than we can express, Amira, thank you! Enjoy 😃

Nazia - May 22, 2022, 6:51 a.m.

Hey Sadia, I made these beans last week and they were phenomenal omg! I’m trying to transition to eating healthier but I’m having a hard time and often opt for take out. Any advise? I want to become a vegan as well but I struggle with time management and always cooking seems stressful especially with my schedule.

PUL Team - May 23, 2022, 5:11 p.m.

Hey Nazia, we're glad the beans were enjoyed! It can be so challenging to get into a groove as life ebbs and flows. Considering you took the time to try the recipe and took the time to share a comment, we have so much confidence coming your way! Working with a healthcare professional, such as a dietitian, is valuable for personalized support. Beatrice - May 20, 2022, 3:51 p.m.

I couldn't find butter beans at my local store, so I substituted with white beans (which are way smaller than the ones I saw on the video).
But oh boy, I really enjoyed to make and eat this recipe!! I love how easy and versatile it is. Thank you PUL team!!🤗

PUL Team - May 23, 2022, 1:43 a.m.

A lovely substitution, Beatrice! We're so glad the beans were enjoyed 🙂

Patricia - May 16, 2022, 8:29 p.m.

I loved this one! Thanks again Sadia and PUL team!

PUL Team - May 18, 2022, 3:46 a.m.

Thank YOU, Patricia!

Katarina - May 16, 2022, 2:08 p.m.

I took my bike and went to the super market just to get the bell pepper and 10 cherry tomatoes, I thought I had harrissa sauce somewhere in my pantry (cuz I thought my sister had it) turns out I did not have it, so I made some spicy tomato sauce on my own, this recipe was 100% worth it and delicious for my tummy, thank you for posting these awesome recipes <3

PUL Team - May 16, 2022, 6:53 p.m.

This sounds incredible, Katarina, we're so glad it was enjoyed with the spicy tomato sauce 😍

Aurora - May 16, 2022, 10:43 a.m.

Thanks again for a delicious dinner! I am not sure what kind of harissa you find in the Netherlands though but with the one I find in France, there's no way I could use 2 Tbsp of it! haha The one we have here is almost like wasabi in strength, we have to dilute it in broth first (I usually live in the UK and the one I find there, I can easily use half of the jar because it's not spicy at all). So I only used a tiny bit this time and added a tin of diced tomatoes so I had lots of sauce to go with the pita bread :)

PUL Team - May 16, 2022, 6:47 p.m.

Hey Aurora, sometimes the sauces can vary, although were you using harissa paste instead of sauce by any chance? We've found that harissa sauce is better for less spice since it has more oil diluting the harissa compared to more concentrated pastes. Love the addition of diced tomatoes though and we're so glad it was still enjoyed in any case 😃

Marianna - May 16, 2022, 2:22 a.m.

Can you recommend a non spicy sauce to use instead of harissa?

PUL Team - May 16, 2022, 6:16 p.m.

Hey Marianna, a tomato-based sauce works nicely as a non-spicy substitute if desired. You could also experiment with a less spicy bean paste, garlic, or lemon-based sauce depending on your preferences 🙂

Scaff - Aug. 6, 2022, 6:13 a.m.

I used a mild harissa from Publix in Florida and added hot sauce, so all of my family could eat it. Try: Mina Harissa Mild Moroccan Red Pepper Sauce. Good luck! It was very mild.

Franny - May 9, 2022, 8:31 p.m.

I just made this recipe for lunch. I'm actually eating it right now! I added some sliced Persian cucumber for a crunch. HOLY SMOKES!!! This is delicious and addictive. As long as I keep the components separated, does this travel and reheat well? This is would great for lunch at work.

PUL Team - May 9, 2022, 9:56 p.m.

Woohoo - so thrilled to hear, Franny! We've enjoyed this one reheated for lunch, although we haven't left in our bag for more than 1.5 hours without refrigeration. The separate components tend to store well in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days 🙂

Anna - May 5, 2022, 11:50 p.m.

Hi, I have enjoyed some of your receipies. They were all great. I am ready to try this one. I am on no wheat diet, what would you suggest to replace the pita With?
I am hooked on your videos. I am one of the subscribers. Love both of you. Cheers to Robin.

PUL Team - May 6, 2022, 3:16 a.m.

Hello Anna, thanks for sharing the kind words 🥰 Perhaps some ideas could be potato, rice, or a wheat-free bread/pita product, such as one made from rye.

Liv - May 5, 2022, 9:49 p.m.

Lovely flavour combinations! We enjoyed this dish, especially with a extra splash of lime

PUL Team - May 6, 2022, 12:42 a.m.

So glad it was enjoyed, Liv, do let us know if you have any other feedback :D

Nina - May 5, 2022, 12:37 a.m.

Super simple but full of flavor!

Mari - April 28, 2022, 8:17 p.m.

Quick and easy with lots of flavour. Perfect for midweek!

I'm a turtle in the kitchen so this took me close to half an hour to cook, but it was well worth it! We loved it, and my husband has requested it again for dinner tonight!

I ended up substituting the bell pepper for a big portobello (150g) that I sauteed with the onion. Next time I'll add in some jalapenos too (I wasn't sure how spicy our harissa was and didn't want to overdo it).

I'm just wondering where the 19g of protein in the nutritional breakdown comes from? I used a 400g tin of Annalisa cannelini beans which yielded 240g of beans at 8.3g of protein per serve. The pita were only 3.7g per serve and I don't see the capsicum, tomatoes or coconut yoghurt providing more than 3g or so. 🤔 Will have to think of ways to sneak in a little extra.

Hey Danielle, we're so glad the labour of love was worth it! The nutrition information provided is an estimate based on the United States Nutrient Database ( We also aim to weigh our ingredients directly where possible. The protein in our beans is similar to yours, although it sounds like our pitas may have been a tad higher in protein. It's natural for there to be some variation between brands and sizes 🙂 The other ingredients, such as onion and avocado will also provide a little protein.

In case you're interested and haven't already seen it yet, our protein article has some ideas related to increasing protein intake (…). Perhaps adding some more vegetables, seeds, or serving the beans with soy yogurt or an alternative whole grain are some ideas to bulk it up 😃

Thanks for the suggestions! I found a different brand of wholemeal pita that has 10g of protein per serve, but I'm thinking this would also be fantastic served with quinoa. Unfortunately I can't find any soy yoghurt locally; I might have to try making my own!

We had this again tonight and I substituted the capsicum with a poblano (and also kept the mushrooms I added last time). It was even better than last time! This recipe is definitely a keeper and we'll be making it often! Thanks again, PUL team! 😊

I made this with white beans and even added mushrooms and snow peas for extra veggies and it turned out sooooo good, I put the bean and veggies mixture in a wrap with lettuce and I loved it, super flavorful <3

This recipe was absolutely delicious! The spicy bean mix with the cool creamy yogurt, avocado and toasted pita was an amazing combination! I loved how quick it was to make too.

This looks incredible! Any suggestions on what I could substitute the bell pepper for (strangely I'm 'allergic' to bell peppers - causes vomiting - but I'm fine with tomatoes and chillis)? I was thinking I'd just add additional tomatoes and some jalapenos?

Can't wait to try it! 😊

PUL Team - April 17, 2022, 6:40 a.m.

Hey Elle, additional tomatoes and chili sound lovely! Some other ideas could be zucchini, sweet potato, more onion, eggplant, or corn. We hope you enjoy it 😊
