Saucy Beans on Garlic Toast

10 min

Navy beans, in the Netherlands go by the descriptive name of "witte bonen" (white beans). They are also known as haricot or Boston beans and are a fantastic base for bold flavours. Inspired by Britain's classic beans on toast recipes, we've added a spicy kick to the usual baked beans. Making the toast into buttery garlic bread adds a burst of flavour to this simple, quick meal.

Garlic toast

  • 2
    cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 Tbsp (15 mL)
    olive oil
  • 2
    slices rustic bread

Saucy beans

  • ¼ cup (60 mL)
    unsweetened soy Greek-style yogurt
  • 2 Tbsp (19 g)
    pickled jalapeños , sliced

Enjoy with

  • avocado
  • fresh cilantro

  1. Add the garlic and oil to a small bowl. Stir.
  2. Use a silicone pastry brush to brush the garlic oil onto both sides of the bread. Transfer the bread to a large pan on medium heat and allow to toast until lightly golden on both sides.
  3. To a small pan on medium heat, add the ingredients for the "saucy beans". Cook for 5 minutes, or until heated through.
  4. Spoon the beans over the garlic toast and serve with a dollop of yogurt and some pickled jalapeño if desired. Enjoy!

Seriously restaurant quality flavors! I didn’t have the chipotle adobo and it was still incredible 😋

This is one of my go-to recipes. I don't typically have yogurt around so I sprinkle a little everything bagel seasoning on top.

One of my favourite quick dinner recipes.

Suluhu - Oct. 3, 2023, 5:29 p.m.

I've been making this when my husband and kids have pizza night. Today my 3 year old asked to taste my "pizza" and then proceeded to eat 75% of it. He was a bit angry afterwards: "Why are you to only one that gets the good pizza mom" So I guess I'll make two portions next time. Hopefully 4 in a year or so 😁

PUL Team - Oct. 5, 2023, 6:57 a.m.

Aww we're so glad your little one enjoyed it, Suluhu! Enjoy your next pizza night 🤗

Margaux - Aug. 1, 2023, 7:44 p.m.

The PULL team did it again! I had almost nothing in my cupboards and made this recipe not really sure how it'd turn out, and... Waw! Sooo tasty!!
I made it with home cooked beans and regular toasts. Also, the parsley is the perfect touch of freshness 🤗
Thank you guys!

Jennifer Danel - June 20, 2023, 5:55 a.m.

Made this for a quick bite and it was delicious! I grew up with beans on toast for breakfast but this recipe definitely takes it up a notch 👍🏼 love the chipotle spice in it.

Sj - March 21, 2023, 10:57 a.m.

My boyfriend keeps asking for this recipe. So much more flavorful than the canned versions and so easy to make. 10/10 recommend the yogurt, avo, and jalapeno on top!

Lindsey Lam - March 2, 2023, 3:51 p.m.

Great taste! Just not a big fan of navy beans. I would definitely make this again with cannellini or other beans!

PUL Team - March 3, 2023, 6:54 p.m.

A lovely idea, Lindsey 🙂

Pati - Feb. 23, 2023, 2:16 p.m.

One of the fastest and tastiest lunches ever! Interesting flavours and after seeing the picture, I was surprised that only tomato paste is used, with no canned tomatoes. It was also quite spicy especially with jalapeños which matched perfectly my knäckebröd that I used instead on the rustic bread. Highly recommended!

PUL Team - Feb. 23, 2023, 7:21 p.m.

Mmmm such a big compliment, Pati, thank you for the glowing review 🤩

Kate - Feb. 19, 2023, 11:52 p.m.

Wow, this was amazingly tasty and surprisingly quick/easy to make! One bite and I knew it was going into my meal rotation. I love the options presented for swapping ingredients. Thank you!!

PUL Team - Feb. 20, 2023, 7:32 a.m.

We appreciate it so much, Kate, thank you 🤗

Natalie - Feb. 10, 2023, 8:57 a.m.

I use this recipe all the time with a baked (or smashed because it’s faster) potato and it’s the best weeknight wholesome dinner- highly recommend, especially with the jalapeños

PUL Team - Feb. 10, 2023, 8:22 p.m.

So lovely to hear, Natalie - thank you for taking the time to share!

Simone - Jan. 24, 2023, 9:04 p.m.

We had this for lunch today and it was a hit! I had a hard time with the garlic burning before the bread would toast in the pan though- although I'm positive that's my own lack of experience with cooking. Definitely will make this again- quick, easy, cheap, and nourishing!

PUL Team - Jan. 26, 2023, 6:31 a.m.

Hey Simone, so glad it was enjoyed! Using enough oil and turning down the heat should help prevent the garlic from burning 🙂

Wieneke - Jan. 22, 2023, 7:27 p.m.

This was sooo good! Loved it, and so did our toddler. We are not used to such a big breakfast over here (Dutch), so we had it for lunch. I added fresh coriander/cilantro because I saw it on the photos, but later realized that it's not on the ingredients list. Flavor fits really well though. I think adding salad and avocado to have it as a dinner is quite nice too. Will try in the future.

PUL Team - Jan. 23, 2023, 4:21 p.m.

So glad it was enjoyed, Wieneke, and great catch! We've added fresh cilantro and avocado to the list of topping 🤗

Alana - Jan. 2, 2023, 7:21 p.m.

Hello! I’m back at it again with veganuary and I have to say that I have made many of the recipes I tried last year all throughout the year. I really appreciate this recipe as I’m not overly an oats kind of gal (although I have really liked your recipes). This meal really surprised me. I thought it was a bit odd but dang it is so delicious. I didn’t have any yogurt and I ate it with pickled jalapeños (I love spice!) and added spinach. This will definitely keep you satisfied if you’re looking for a breakfast to keep you going in the morning!! Thanks again Sadia and Robin!!!

PUL Team - Jan. 2, 2023, 8:14 p.m.

Thanks to YOU Alana for trying out the recipe! It's so good with the pickled jalapenos, eh? So glad you enjoy it too 😋

Francesca. - Dec. 13, 2022, 12:09 p.m.

PUL Team - Dec. 14, 2022, 6:25 a.m.

Oh, Francesca, thank you for the very kind words 😊 It means so much!

Sanne - Dec. 13, 2022, 6:04 a.m.

I have a bit of a random question. As someone with a tomato allergy, what substitute do you recommend?

PUL Team - Dec. 13, 2022, 7:25 a.m.

Hey Sanne! One idea is roasted red pepper puree 😃

Sanne - Dec. 13, 2022, 7:28 a.m.

Thank you for your reply! Unfortunately I am allergic to red peppers too hahahaha. It's ok though, I'll try one of your other recipes!

PUL Team - Dec. 14, 2022, 6:22 a.m.

Hey Sanne, aw oops! There are some interesting homemade pastes that use carrots. It could be fun to play around with pesto, soy sauce or olive tapenade - though we'd recommend starting with much less of these and adding more to taste. You could also try to omit the paste and add more spices such as garlic powder, onion powder, or paprika to taste. We hope you enjoy our recipes nonetheless. Perhaps one to check out in case you haven't already seen it is our Avocado Toast with Chipotle Bean Spread:… Happy cooking 🤗

Roni - Nov. 6, 2022, 12:18 p.m.

Wow that flavor!! I never thought beans on toast could be so exciting! It was the perfect weekend brunch :D

Woop woop! It means so much, Roni 😊

Kathryn - Nov. 3, 2022, 12:41 p.m.

These are so good. I will definitely be making these a part of my meal plan rotation for sure. A great cozy Fall and Winter addition.

PUL Team - Nov. 3, 2022, 6:37 p.m.

So glad it was enjoyed, Kathryn, thank you 🤗

Claudia - Nov. 1, 2022, 10:26 a.m.

I am more of a sweet breakfast person but when Sadia mentioned she sometimes has this for dinner, I figured why not try it? I've made it a few times now for lunch or dinner (with some avocado as suggested to bulk it up a bit) and it's delicious! It's definitely worth it to make the tomato sauce from scratch rather than buying beans in tomato sauce, it doesn't take much time and totally elevates the dish, plus you can customize it to your own liking when adding the spices. I haven't tried it with pickled jalapeños yet, but will try it next time because it sounds like a great addition!

PUL Team - Nov. 2, 2022, 4:38 a.m.

Aww we appreciate it so much, Claudia! We think you'll love it with pickled jalapeños 😃

Olivia - Oct. 16, 2022, 1:51 p.m.

Just made this for a weekend breakfast and it was WONDERFUL! Had it with some avo and it was delish!

PUL Team - Oct. 16, 2022, 11:59 p.m.

Aw we're so happy it was enjoyed, Olivia!

Amber - Oct. 8, 2022, 1:57 p.m.

I love pick up limes and have been following you for years! Keep up the good work!

PUL Team - Oct. 9, 2022, 10:42 p.m.

Thanks so very much, Amber! 🤗

Charlotte - Sept. 29, 2022, 5:13 p.m.

What a delightful upgrade to the classic beans on toast that I've known since childhood! I especially oved the chipotle flavours and addition of the creamy yogurt on top! 🤌🏻 I used cannellini beans as I was unable to find navy beans and they were great.

PUL Team - Oct. 1, 2022, 8:12 a.m.

Thank you for the glowing feedback, Charlotte! It's so appreciated 😃

Cameron - Sept. 26, 2022, 12:19 p.m.

Good call on the pickled jalapenos - it was already the most flavorful baked bean recipe but that just took it over the top 👌 thanks for the recipe, PUL!

PUL Team - Sept. 28, 2022, 7:02 p.m.

So thrilled to hear, Cameron, thank you!

Rebecca - Sept. 24, 2022, 4:58 a.m.

Oh, this was a delightful recipe! I'm continually learning in the kitchen, and I'm eager to share what's worked for me. I made it about 80% to the written recipe based on what was in my fridge/pantry, so here are my tweaks in case someone else in the same situation - I did not have any spicy sauce, so I used about 3/4 teaspoon smoked paprika, 3/4 teaspoon regular paprika, and 1/8 teaspoon cayenne. I bloomed all the spices in a bit of olive oil before adding the tomato paste, which I cooked down til it got darker. Maybe 3 minutes?
I had these weird tasting whole grain pita pockets that came frozen (Ezekiel brand, if anyone's curious), toasted those in the garlic olive oil til they got almost crunchy and they got significantly better tasting.
The pickled jalapenos add so much! Didn't have a jar of them, but I did have a regular pepper from the farmer's market hanging out in the crisper. I cut it up, boiled maybe half a cup to 3/4 cup (depends on the size of your container) of distilled white vinegar with 2 teaspoons sugar and a teaspoon of salt, and poured it over the pepper in a glass bowl. By the time the beans were done, my pepper was done pickling. (I'm a slow cook, lol)
If you have time, let the beans simmer on low for 20ish or more minutes so the flavors have more time to soak into the beans. Add maybe half a cup of extra water so the beans don't stick to the bottom (remember to stir!) Also, taste for salt and pepper.
I will absolutely be making these again! <3

PUL Team - Sept. 24, 2022, 5:43 a.m.

Aw, Rebecca, you're the best! Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with the recipe - it's so appreciated. Love continually learning in the kitchen 😃

A lovely idea, Em, so glad it was enjoyed 😃

Maya - Sept. 18, 2022, 6:41 a.m.

So delicious and easy to make! I used cannelloni beans and bullion paste as that was what I had on hand and it was still very yummy. For my personal preference I would recommend adding a bit less tomato paste.

PUL Team - Sept. 18, 2022, 4:38 p.m.

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with it, Maya!
