Navy beans, in the Netherlands go by the descriptive name of "witte bonen" (white beans). They are also known as haricot or Boston beans and are a fantastic base for bold flavours. Inspired by Britain's classic beans on toast recipes, we've added a spicy kick to the usual baked beans. Making the toast into buttery garlic bread adds a burst of flavour to this simple, quick meal.
Use a silicone pastry brush to brush the garlic oil onto both sides of the bread. Transfer the bread to a large pan on medium heat and allow to toast until lightly golden on both sides.
To a small pan on medium heat, add the ingredients for the "saucy beans". Cook for 5 minutes, or until heated through.
Spoon the beans over the garlic toast and serve with a dollop of yogurt and some pickled jalapeño if desired. Enjoy!
Storage
This recipe is best enjoyed immediately.
The saucy beans can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.

He was a bit angry afterwards: "Why are you to only one that gets the good pizza mom" So I guess I'll make two portions next time. Hopefully 4 in a year or so 😁

Hey Sanne! One idea is roasted red pepper puree 😃
Sanne - Dec. 13, 2022, 7:28 a.m.
Thank you for your reply! Unfortunately I am allergic to red peppers too hahahaha. It's ok though, I'll try one of your other recipes!
PUL Team - Dec. 14, 2022, 6:22 a.m.
Hey Sanne, aw oops! There are some interesting homemade pastes that use carrots. It could be fun to play around with pesto, soy sauce or olive tapenade - though we'd recommend starting with much less of these and adding more to taste. You could also try to omit the paste and add more spices such as garlic powder, onion powder, or paprika to taste. We hope you enjoy our recipes nonetheless. Perhaps one to check out in case you haven't already seen it is our Avocado Toast with Chipotle Bean Spread: pickuplimes.com/recipe/avocad… Happy cooking 🤗

I've made it a few times now for lunch or dinner (with some avocado as suggested to bulk it up a bit) and it's delicious! It's definitely worth it to make the tomato sauce from scratch rather than buying beans in tomato sauce, it doesn't take much time and totally elevates the dish, plus you can customize it to your own liking when adding the spices. I haven't tried it with pickled jalapeños yet, but will try it next time because it sounds like a great addition!

Oh, this was a delightful recipe! I'm continually learning in the kitchen, and I'm eager to share what's worked for me. I made it about 80% to the written recipe based on what was in my fridge/pantry, so here are my tweaks in case someone else in the same situation - I did not have any spicy sauce, so I used about 3/4 teaspoon smoked paprika, 3/4 teaspoon regular paprika, and 1/8 teaspoon cayenne. I bloomed all the spices in a bit of olive oil before adding the tomato paste, which I cooked down til it got darker. Maybe 3 minutes? I had these weird tasting whole grain pita pockets that came frozen (Ezekiel brand, if anyone's curious), toasted those in the garlic olive oil til they got almost crunchy and they got significantly better tasting. The pickled jalapenos add so much! Didn't have a jar of them, but I did have a regular pepper from the farmer's market hanging out in the crisper. I cut it up, boiled maybe half a cup to 3/4 cup (depends on the size of your container) of distilled white vinegar with 2 teaspoons sugar and a teaspoon of salt, and poured it over the pepper in a glass bowl. By the time the beans were done, my pepper was done pickling. (I'm a slow cook, lol) If you have time, let the beans simmer on low for 20ish or more minutes so the flavors have more time to soak into the beans. Add maybe half a cup of extra water so the beans don't stick to the bottom (remember to stir!) Also, taste for salt and pepper. I will absolutely be making these again! <3

(I'm a slow cook, lol)
If you have time, let the beans simmer on low for 20ish or more minutes so the flavors have more time to soak into the beans. Add maybe half a cup of extra water so the beans don't stick to the bottom (remember to stir!) Also, taste for salt and pepper.
I will absolutely be making these again! <3
Super delicious and easy to make :)

Hello, I completely love your website, your recipes, your spirit, love story, humor and transparency. The lovely aesthetics of your outstanding website make me want to be a better cook., person and human. :) Simply put, you make food look beautiful. Typically a deeply shy person, I don't comment often. However I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate and truly enjoy and admire your website. I'd like to know if your e-Book of recipes is available for purchase in the US and will another book of your recipes be available in the future.? They are gorgeous and look delicious. It's hard to pick a favorite. :)
I've always struggled with eating breakfast on a regular basis, but I can definitely see myself making this quite often. Really easy. Really yummy even with some ingredient substitutions.
Love this savory breakfast. Didn’t have canned chipotle so used a bit of chipotle hot sauce instead. So yummy!
So delicious and easy to make! I used cannelloni beans and bullion paste as that was what I had on hand and it was still very yummy. For my personal preference I would recommend adding a bit less tomato paste.
Had this for lunch today and it was sooo tasty!! Love how quickly it came together and I absolutely love garlic toast! I already know this is going to become a regular :D
Had it with avocado - amazing!!!
My word... this is so much better than the store-bought baked beans. So much flavour in these! And on garlic toast? Genius.
