Cold Brew Coffee with Vanilla Cream

12 hr + 7 min

Drink

10 ingredients or less

A really great cup of cold brew coffee takes some patience but is well worth the wait. The cold brew imparts a less bitter flavour to the coffee than the traditional hot brew. Mixed with the sweet and smooth vanilla cream, it's such a delightful pick-me-up.

Ingredients

Cold brew concentrate

  • 1 cup (80 g)
    whole coffee beans
  • 3 cups (720 mL)
    water, room temperature or cold

Vanilla cream

Final touches

  • 1½ cups (360 mL)
    cold water
  • 1¼ cups (139 g)
    ice cubes

Directions

  1. Grind the coffee beans to a medium-coarse consistency.
  2. In a French press or large mason jar, combine the coffee grinds and water. Stir and top with the lid. Steep at room temperature or in the fridge for 12 - 24 hours. The longer it sits, the stronger the coffee taste.
  3. To make the vanilla cream, combine the cream, soy milk, vanilla, and agave syrup in a separate jar, and store in the fridge until ready to use.
  4. The next day, place a strainer over a bowl lined with cheese cloth (or nut milk bag). Strain the grounds through the cheesecloth. If desired, filter the coffee through a second time to remove any residual ground beans. The liquid that remains in the bowl is now your cold brew coffee concentrate!
  5. To make the drink, fill a glass with ice. Then pour in 2 parts cold brew concentrate, 1 part cold water, and 1 part vanilla cream. Stir and enjoy!

Notes

  • We used a 23% fat soy-based liquid cream used to traditionally make whipped cream.

Storage

  • The cold brew concentrate can be kept in the fridge in a large glass container for up to 1 week.
  • The vanilla cream can also be stored in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Great! So simple and amazing taste! Thanks!

Amanda - Aug. 17, 2022, 5:01 p.m.

Minea - July 12, 2022, 7:03 p.m.

I don't really drink coffee but I really liked this one, lovely on the warm days when a warm drink just doesn't work.

PUL Team - July 13, 2022, 6:21 a.m.

So glad it's being enjoyed, Minea!

BM - May 22, 2022, 12:22 p.m.

Enjoyed this, thought it would be sweeter but actually, the sweetness was enough! Also froze some coffee so used some coffee ice cubes too. So good. Looking forward to making more of your drink recipes!

PUL Team - May 23, 2022, 8:17 p.m.

Aw we're so happy to hear, BM! We hope you enjoy the other beverages 🤗

Ysenia Nava - April 27, 2022, 3:46 p.m.

Very flavorful! Great recipe.

Joanne - April 16, 2022, 7:53 a.m.

Hi sadya about the coffee, i don't have coffee beans but i already have the coffee grounds... How many grams will i use? Is it the same with 1 cup?

PUL Team - April 16, 2022, 7:55 p.m.

Hey Joanne, yes it's a 1:1 ratio for using coffee grounds in place of the beans. One cup should weigh around 80 grams 😊

Shreeya - April 15, 2022, 8:27 a.m.

This drink was really good i loved it! 😀

PUL Team - April 15, 2022, 5:01 p.m.

So glad to hear, Shreeya!

Nikki - April 4, 2022, 7:27 p.m.

Thanks ❤

Georgie - April 4, 2022, 6:43 a.m.

This looks great! I'd love to try this recipe.

Unfortunately, we don't have a cream that is pourable but whips in Australia (and we don't have a soy based option here). We can get Oatly cream. It's not the whippable kind, and has 13% fat, not 23%. Do you think that would work/be worthwhile or should I just replace the cream with more plant milk?

I should add that a coffee 'creamer' is really not a thing in Australia, so I'm not sure what this is trying to replicate. This makes finding subs a little harder :-)

PUL Team - April 5, 2022, 5:13 a.m.

Hey Georgie, thanks for the insight and question! We don't whip the cream in this one so that should work just fine. The higher fat content is mainly to add a delicious creaminess and mouthfeel 🙂 Sending hugs to Australia!

Deepthi - March 29, 2022, 7:39 a.m.

This was my first time brewing my own cold brew and I was super intimidated by it before. However, I felt so much reassured after watching your video! The flavour is so much more smoother and refreshing than the regular kind which is so new to me, I love it. I've now been making cold brews for over a month and it is the best feeling knowing my coffee beans are put to great use, thank you so much Sadia for this new confidence to try new things!! Much love <3

PUL Team - March 29, 2022, 8 p.m.

Oh Deepthi, thank YOU for the glowing feedback and kind words! Brewing coffee can be super intimidating at first. It means so much that the recipe is being enjoyed 💚

Vera - March 16, 2022, 9:23 p.m.

Love this coffee recipe! The vanilla cream is exactly what I have been looking for! Thank you so very much. And a very beautiful website!

PUL Team - March 17, 2022, 5:36 p.m.

We're so happy to hear, Vera, it means so much 😊

Edward - Feb. 28, 2022, 4:04 a.m.

Cath - Sept. 14, 2021, 6:38 p.m.

I've been making this coffee the whole summer, it's delicious, refreshing, and the sweetness from the vanilla cream is just heaven!

Martyna - Aug. 17, 2021, 9:28 p.m.

I just made it, now waiting the 12 hours, can't wait! Thanks for an awesome recipe as always x

Caroline - Aug. 12, 2021, 11:25 p.m.

OMG so good ! i love coffee , hot and cold . I used some cashew/almond milk and was very creamy as well . thank you. I used 80 g coffee and 3 cups water and i ended up with just over 2 cups of coffee; i strained it with a nutbag and then again with coffee filter for the small residues , Yum!!

PUL Team - Aug. 13, 2021, 2:05 a.m.

Thanks for sharing your experience with this one, Caroline!

Ryan - Aug. 3, 2021, 4:43 p.m.

I was tired this morning but after I just tried my cold brew - I can make it through today. Thank you for this recipe!!

Alice - Aug. 2, 2021, 11:56 a.m.

Thank you so much for this recipe Sadia, my husband and I are loving it!
I made a few switches based on the ingredients that were available to me - oat cream and cashew milk instead of soy, maple syrup instead of agave and I also melted a little amount of chocolate into the milk before I added it to the cream mix to give more of a mocha taste.
A definite go-to for the future, merci!

PUL Team - Aug. 5, 2021, 3:46 a.m.

Mmm love the addition of chocolate for a mocha-styled beverage! Thanks for sharing, Alice ☺️

Georgiana - Aug. 2, 2021, 10:15 a.m.

Hi, Sadia, everyone! I've been making this every week since you posted the recipe (this and the other ones actually). What can I say? These are perfect options for summer days and to be honest, they are way better than the ones served at the cafés. :-)

I have a question though: When measuring a cup of coffee beans, it is actually around 82-84 grams - at least with the measuring cup that I am using. Are you using a specific one? The mL of water are the same for me, too.

Thank you for everything!

PUL Team - Aug. 4, 2021, 3:21 p.m.

So glad you're enjoying the recipe, Georgiana, and thanks so much for the question! We had an error on the back end which has now been fixed. Really appreciate the patience and support 🌻

Aurora - July 30, 2021, 1 p.m.

We had a bit of a heat wave in the UK last week and I started making this every afternoon to cool down! Iced coffee is delicious but this recipe makes it perfect! :)

Hiba AJ - July 29, 2021, 11:20 a.m.

This is amazingly delicious and refreshing for a hot summer day when you want to grab a light mid-day pick me up! 🤤 I’m making this again and again and then AGAIN💃🏻💛

PUL Team - July 30, 2021, 11:24 a.m.

So glad to read this - thank you, Hiba! 😃

Bassam - July 29, 2021, 3:14 a.m.

The beverage tastes great! Would you make a sugar-free version of these lovely iced beverages?

PUL Team - July 30, 2021, 12:11 a.m.

Hey there, Bassam! Feel free to adjust the syrup in this one if desired. You may also enjoy our condensed milk iced coffee using unsweetened condensed milk (pickuplimes.com/recipe/sweete…) perhaps☺️ We've noted down the request in the meantime!

Tamar - July 26, 2021, 10:20 p.m.

This cold brew coffee recipe is now our most essential staple for these hot summer mornings. With a huge plus of batch-making and having delicious and refreshing coffee ready for every day of the week. It literally makes our mornings so much more enjoyable (: We are using the oatmeal barista milk, but would love to give the vegan cream a try as well.

PUL Team - July 28, 2021, 4:06 a.m.

So thrilled you enjoyed the recipe, Tamar! Do let us know if you give the cream a try 😄

Diana - July 25, 2021, 1:46 p.m.

I had a week full of work and looked forward to the break and the iced coffee every day. I didn't have any vegan cream on hand, but just used barista oat drink and that tasted really good too. Thank you for this recipe!

Rebecca - July 25, 2021, 10:27 a.m.

Found your video on cold brew coffee today and instantly gave it a try, since I had some cold coffee sitting in the fridge.
I expected it to be good - but this is next level! It tastes amazing!
Thank your for all the tasty recipes. I love your videos, they always make me to run to the kitchen and try your ideas immediately!

PUL Team - July 27, 2021, 1:09 a.m.

Thanks a bunch for being here, Rebecca! So glad you enjoyed the recipe ☺️

Steph - July 23, 2021, 1:01 p.m.

This is SO SO GOOD!!! 😍

Vivian H. - July 23, 2021, 11:14 a.m.

I used to hate Cold Brew but decided to give it a try after you posted the video on your YouTube Channel....and now I'm addicted! :D
My husband loves strong coffee and he drinks the "cold brew concentrate" right out of the bottle.

PUL Team - July 25, 2021, 7:13 p.m.

Oh brilliant, so glad you're both enjoying it - thanks for sharing, Vivian!

Xzyla - July 23, 2021, 7:37 a.m.

I just tried the cold brew iced coffe yesterday and I was BLOWN AWAY!! It was soo good! I never ever drink coffee but I wanted to give iced coffee a try and this recipe is perfect! Plus my family loved it! Can't wait to try the other 2 recipes! All these recipes are a must try!

PUL Team - July 25, 2021, 6:59 p.m.

Aw brilliant, so glad you enjoyed it, Xzyla - thanks for sharing!

Charlotte - July 22, 2021, 3:03 p.m.

I loved the ease of the cold brew idea and I didn't even know you could do this by leaving it overnight! My parents gifted us a French press a couple of years ago which came in very useful. We loved this coffee and the only downside for me was that the vanilla cream tasted amazing by itself but I couldn't really taste it in the coffee. I couldn't find vegan whipping cream, only regular Alpro cooking cream which may have been the reason. Still, another brilliant iced coffee recipe!

Charlotte - July 22, 2021, 4:57 p.m.

P.S. I also used one cup of pre-ground coffee beans which was maybe why the coffee was pretty strong! Maybe I could use slightly less in future as I guess a cup of coffee beans would not be so compacted.

PUL Team - July 23, 2021, 2:29 a.m.

Thanks a bunch for the insight and sharing this, Charlotte, it's super appreciated! Another idea may be letting the coffee to steep for less time as well to help reduce the coffee flavour 🙂

Laura - July 21, 2021, 1:01 p.m.

Hi! Your blog has quickly become our favorite for all thing plant based! I love the convenience of this recipe when we are on the go. I wasn’t able to find a plant-based cream other than coconut cream and was wondering if you have any suggestions on where to find that? It was delicious but would love to try your original recipe as well :)

PUL Team - July 22, 2021, 6:16 a.m.

Hey Laura! I'm so glad to read you're enjoying our recipes - thanks so much 🥰 The soy whipping cream we used was from the Alpro brand, which is more commonly found in shops throughout Europe. I'm not sure where you live, but if you have access the Silk brand (commonly found in North America), I've heard they also have a good plant-based whipping cream as well. I hope this helps for now 😊

Aubrey - July 18, 2021, 12:03 a.m.

I love a good, creamy, vegan coffee creamer!

Staci - July 17, 2021, 10:39 p.m.

Curious what heavy cream you would recommend that is not soy based? Would coconut cream work the same way?

PUL Team - July 18, 2021, 3:24 a.m.

Hey Staci, a thicker plant-based cream, such as coconut or oat whipping cream should work just as well 🙂 The taste will differ of course, but should still be delicious. Let us know how it goes if you give the recipe a try!

Kathy - July 17, 2021, 2:22 a.m.

Loved this recipe. I wasn’t able to find vegan but next time I might just use something similar. Overall it was amazing and my husband has coffee for the whole week!! Thank you for such great recipes. ❤️ 🍲 ☕️

Sarah-Jane - July 14, 2021, 8:28 p.m.

That creamer is HEAVENLY (tasted it right off the jar). And your cold brew method is so simple, so convenient, I love it. Complicated steps always gets me discouraged, but now I already have a batch in the fridge and can't wait to taste the whole drink tomorrow morning!

PUL Team - July 18, 2021, 1:26 a.m.

This means so much to hear, Sarah-Jane, thanks a bunch for taking the time to share! So glad you enjoyed this one 😃

Evelien - July 13, 2021, midnight

Thanks!! Looks delish 😃😃

Catalin - July 11, 2021, 11:40 p.m.

We're so happy to hear, Catalin, it's much appreciated! Lots of love to Romania ✨

Sora - July 11, 2021, 1:40 p.m.

DELICIOUS DELICIOUS DELICIOUS I LOVE THIS SO MUCH! And after making the ingredients initially, all I have to do is drink it for the rest of the week, I'm looking forward to that! I loved this so much, this is 1000% better than any store-bought cold brew I've had. THANK YOU!!!

PUL Team - July 16, 2021, 6:39 a.m.

Woohoo 🥳 Thank you for the incredible review, Sora!

Meg - July 11, 2021, 5:09 a.m.

This is so delicious!! The vanilla cream is super creamy and the flavors work really well with the cold brew. I love that you can make a bunch in one day and have this delicious coffee whenever you want. I have a big sweet tooth so the creamer was a bit under sweet for me so I had to add a bit more agave, but overall it's really good! If you're making the vanilla cream, make sure to taste test it :) Thanks for the recipe Sadia!

PUL Team - July 16, 2021, 5:59 a.m.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share this, Meg, it's much appreciated!

Mihaela - July 10, 2021, 6:53 p.m.

This is my new favorite summer drink! I could just drink the vanilla cream like that- I have a sweet tooth. Incredibly creamy and refreshing. Pick Up Limes never disappoints. I know I'll be making this every day from now on. Thank you Sadia xx

PUL Team - July 16, 2021, 3:51 a.m.

Woo! We're so grateful to hear the wonderful review, Mihaela, enjoy the recipe 😃

Sarah B. - July 10, 2021, 1:52 p.m.

I just made this, mainly because where I live (Belgium) storebought creamers aren't really a thing, especially vegan versions. And I love my coffee with lots of (plant)milk and sweetness.
I had to swap out the vegan whipping cream with oat cooking cream, but it still had a lovely thickness to it and the recipe is delicious.
I love how simple it is to make, just make sure you have the ingredients as staples in your fridge and you can make a batch whenever you need it! And if you prefer it sweeter or less sweet, it's super easy to adapt.

Ofcourse after I made the creamer, I licked the spoon to taste test it.. and well.. I wouldnt be surprised if I add some of it to some chopped up strawberries later...

PUL Team - July 15, 2021, 4:36 p.m.

We appreciate this so much, Sarah! So glad the recipe was enjoyed and you were able to swap out the inaccessible ingredients! Strawberries are a delicious idea 😍

Jennifer T - July 10, 2021, 8:30 a.m.

Bushra - July 9, 2021, 3:31 p.m.

I kid you not just last week whilst I was making coffee I had leftover soy cream (Alpro) remaining and I whipped it up and added it to my coffee, I usually prefer cold over warm and when I saw this recipe today, I was like Ahhhh! Yaya. The overnight brew is a great idea! Keep up the great work PUL. In awe of the new website <3

PUL Team - July 14, 2021, 9:57 p.m.
