Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C), and lightly grease or line the inside of a muffin tin.
  2. To a large bowl, add the ground flaxseeds and water, mix, and allow to sit for 5 minutes to gel.
  3. Then add the bananas and mash until very well combined.
  4. Whisk in the sugar, applesauce, coconut oil, and vanilla.
  5. Add the cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt, and mix again.
  6. Then add the flour, mixing until just combined. Some streaks remaining are okay. Gently fold in the chocolate. Be careful not to over-mix
  7. Evenly divide the batter into the prepared muffin tin. Top each muffin with extra chocolate chunks, if desired, and bake on the middle rack of the oven for about 15 - 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out clean.
  8. Allow the muffins to cool in the tin for a few minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack to cool completely. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Refined coconut oil is coconut oil that doesn't smell or taste like coconuts. If you prefer a distinct coconut taste, use unrefined coconut oil instead.

Storage

  • Store in an airtight container on the counter for up to 2 days.
  • Store in the freezer for up to 3 weeks.

Shelby - Nov. 7, 2022, 10:19 p.m.

This is a family hit! We don't make them fully vegan (use semi-sweet chocolate chips) and sometimes an egg if we don't have applesauce on hand. But they are a great way to use up our extra ripe bananas when we want a chocolatey treat instead of banana bread. I love that it gets all mixed up in one bowl for less dishes and its easy enough that my kids love to help out.

Moving on to test some of the soup recipes next!

PUL Team - Nov. 8, 2022, 4:43 a.m.

We hope you enjoy the soups, Shelby!

Teresa - Nov. 7, 2022, 1:45 a.m.

These sound great and Hu is my favorite chocolate right now and I can’t believe it’s the one you linked. Wow. Making these tomorrow!

PUL Team - Nov. 7, 2022, 7:25 a.m.

We hope you enjoy the muffins, Teresa 😃

Sheila - Oct. 31, 2022, 8:06 p.m.

These are def a treat like a cupcake :) I didnt have 3 bananas, so I subbed about 1/2 cup of pumpkin puree. I also added a bit of water since my batter was dry. These are super easy and tasty. Nuke for 15 seconds, and they are just perfect! They are extremely banana-y, so even with 2 bananas, the flavor of the chocolate was just slight. I would experiment with more pumpkin and less banana next time to make these a tad less sweet and banana-forward.

PUL Team - Nov. 2, 2022, 4:20 a.m.

Ooo thank you for sharing your experience with the muffins, Sheila! It's so appreciated. Avoiding overly ripe bananas can also help to avoid an overpowering banana taste 🤗

Dominika - Oct. 30, 2022, 5:39 p.m.

perfect lazy sunday dessert ✨🧁

Roma - Oct. 30, 2022, 10:08 a.m.

Wish there wasn't as much white flour in this recipe. 😌

Shreela Sen - Oct. 30, 2022, 9:17 a.m.

Superb recipe

Sharon - Oct. 30, 2022, 3:49 a.m.

If I don’t have ground flaxseed, can I use whole flaxseeds instead? If not, what are good substitutes?

PUL Team - Nov. 1, 2022, 6:30 a.m.

Hey there, Sharon, the ground flaxseeds form a gel when combined with water that helps the muffins stick together. Whole flaxseeds won't form this gel because of their outer layer so we wouldn't recommend using them. If you have access to a high-power blender or coffee grinder, you could grind the whole flaxseeds into a powder. Alternatively, you can substitute the ground flaxseeds with another ground seed, such as ground chia seeds 🙂

Anisha - Oct. 30, 2022, 12:18 a.m.

Saw your story and made it right away. Such a treat! It's like banana bread and chocolate, what's not to like?

PUL Team - Nov. 1, 2022, 6:21 a.m.

So glad to hear, Anisha!

Devanshi Singhi - Oct. 29, 2022, 8:13 p.m.

Is there something we can use instead of the applesauce?

Abby - Oct. 30, 2022, 12:44 a.m.

Probably egg but then they wouldn’t be vegan.

PUL Team - Oct. 30, 2022, 2:33 a.m.

Hey Devanshi, we've heard positive results with unsweetened soy-based yogurt or extra mashed banana. Another pureed fruit or silken tofu may also work! Do let us know if you give the recipe a try 🙂

Nina - Oct. 16, 2022, 2:36 p.m.

I tried these with your chocolate frosting and they were divine! Thank you so much!

Ags - Sept. 24, 2022, 10:57 p.m.

I tried making muffins but they always end up uncooked in the middle. The outside bakes to the point of burning whilst the inside is hollow. I use a oven like air fryer.
I omitted the oil and sugar, just ajustes the recipe to my dietary requirements.
What am I doing wrong?
I thought it was the tins but when I used ceramic ones the same thing happened.
Am I overloading the fryer? Does the expiration of baking powder matter?
Thank you

PUL Team - Sept. 25, 2022, 1:46 a.m.

Hey there, Ags, thanks for taking the time to share. If the outside is overbaked and the inside is underbaked we suspect the oven temperature is too high. This could cause the outside to crisp up too much without enough time for the inside to cook. We hope this helps for now 😊

Salome - Sept. 18, 2022, 8:08 p.m.

Very tasty! And goo-y!
When I baked them 15 minutes , took them out of the oven and let them cool down and got the cakes out of their siliconmuffinshapes, the bottoms were very soggy, some parts even stuck to the bottom of the muffintin.
Did I grease the tins too much?
I ended up flipping the cakes upside down and baked them for another 15 minutes, which helped but the tops on the bottom got a bit dark.
Any tips?

PUL Team - Sept. 19, 2022, 6:15 p.m.

Hey there, Salome, not enough baking time or not removing baked muffins from the tin to cool can promote a soggy bottom. For baking, the muffins may take longer than 15 minutes to bake depending on your oven. We'd recommend baking until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

For cooling, did the muffins cool in the tin or on a cooling rack? When muffins cool too long in the tin, it can promote a soggier texture if the steam can't escape. We can let the muffins cool slightly before transferring them to a cooling rack to avoid this. We hope this helps for now and so glad the muffins were still enjoyed 🤗

Leila - Aug. 18, 2022, 5:03 a.m.

I used 2/3 of the sugar suggested and it was still good! I would say I used chocolate that was too dark so it made the muffins bitter. But otherwise a really good vegan chocolate banana muffin recipe.

PUL Team - Aug. 18, 2022, 6:30 a.m.

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with it, Leila 😊

Minchi Fox - Oct. 29, 2022, 8:17 p.m.

Thanks for sharing Leila! I was wondering if the texture would get ruined if I omitted most of the sugar and now I know they will turn out just fine!

Leila - Nov. 1, 2022, 4:45 a.m.

That's the magic of PUL's recipe! Since we are already using so many substitutes (apple sauce, banana), the texture probably isn't as fluffy as a traditional muffin, but I prefer moist and less sugary muffins with chocolate. To me, vegan cooking/baking is not about replicating a traditional recipe, but to embrace new flavors and texture.

Eva - July 31, 2022, 8:46 a.m.

So good! I used frozen bananas, the result was great!

PUL Team - July 31, 2022, 9:26 p.m.

Aw so glad to hear, Ewa, thank you!

Courtney - July 12, 2022, 6:11 p.m.

Recommend!! Best recipe when you have bananas that are not looking the best. Or even if you just want a good banana/chocolate treat.
So good!! No fluffy I made little mini ones too.
❤️❤️

So glad they were enjoyed, Leanne, thank you 🙂

Sandi - March 22, 2022, 4:20 p.m.

These muffins are just delicious! I’m a pastry chef and experimenting with vegan recipes for the home cook. Replaced coconut oil with a light extra virgin olive oil. Baked up great. Thanks so much!!

Thanks for the insight, Sandi! So cool to hear about the experimenting 😍

Gloria-Karin - Jan. 2, 2022, 5:15 p.m.

They came out from the oven super tasty - really packed with flavour - so everyone loved them! Will definitely do this recipe again. And it worked great to replace the flaxseed with chia seeds.

PUL Team - Jan. 2, 2022, 6:59 p.m.

Oh, Gloria-Karin, so lovely to hear! Thank you 🌻

Julia - Dec. 7, 2021, 4:59 p.m.

great after freezing!

Newbie_Rookie_00 - Aug. 19, 2021, 6:20 a.m.

Delish! Delish! Delicious!
I'm at it again! :D
I made one substitute and reduced the amount; I used a melted butter instead of an oil and they were perfect! Moist, chocolatey, gooey, and fluffy. Smelled fabulous. The banana undertone (used two since that's all I had) was wonderful. Next time, I'll try the coconut oil :)
Taking them to work for a coworker's bday! So thankful and excited! :)

Just a fun anecdote: While having a lovely conversation with a grocery attendant about a few ingredients I was looking for, we touched based on tahini and what one could do with it. I've been using it in overnight oats going on three weeks now and with a few other dishes. I showed her my favorite brand and typed in 'tahini' in the search bar of the PUL website and she was blown away by the beauty of it all! I scrolled up and down and showed her the feature of the recipe scale, filter features, and the photos!! She was captivated by it all that she told me to stop! HA! This was after she had told me how hard it was to keep her paycheck since she works at a fun grocery store.
Thanks PUL for all the hard work, dedication, joy, and beauty that you put into this mission.

Truly grateful,
L

PUL Team - Aug. 19, 2021, 8:47 p.m.

Hi Sara! We're so glad you're enjoying these ones and the new website - it means so much 😊

Gry - Aug. 14, 2021, 3:38 a.m.

These are so so good! Especially helpful right before your period when those chocolate cravings are at its worst! Really delicious and my neice has a great time liking the bowl after we put them in the muffin tin. I thinks its her favorite part to be honest, aside from when she eats them!

PUL Team - Aug. 14, 2021, 5:56 p.m.

So happy to hear, Gry! How kind of your niece to help you clean the bowl too😉

Bridget - Aug. 11, 2021, 10:39 a.m.

Delicious recipe. Made two times: first time used banana instead apple sauce, turned out still delicious but more firm, second time made it with home made apple sauce and turned out amazing and soft. My 2 year old and 5 year old love it, too. So I could say children approved^^. This one is one of my favourites sweet recipe. ^^

PUL Team - Aug. 11, 2021, 4:37 p.m.

Mmm homemade applesauce sounds so yummy! Thanks for sharing your experience with the muffins, Bridget. We're so happy it was enjoyed by your little ones too 😃

Saskia - Aug. 6, 2021, 3:02 p.m.

This recipe is great! I just tried it out and used soybased yoghurt instead of applesauce and granulated stevia (as i can't have apples & sugar), the muffins still came out very fluffy and tasty :)

PUL Team - Aug. 7, 2021, 1:56 a.m.

Thanks for sharing, Saskia, and glad you enjoyed the recipe :)

Clare - Aug. 4, 2021, 9:22 a.m.

Love this recipe! Although I had to bake the muffins longer than 15 minutes, they came out deliciously moist and fluffy!

Kim - July 26, 2021, 8:09 a.m.

Delicious recipe. I made these today with home-made apple sauce (first time I have ever made apple sauce, and I didn't realise it was so easy!) .I will definitely be making these again :)

PUL Team - July 27, 2021, 7:52 p.m.

Mmm homemade applesauce sounds delicious, Kim! So glad the muffins were enjoyed ☺️

Delicious!

Yayu - July 23, 2021, 3:50 a.m.

I swap sugar to dates and the muffin still tastes amazing!
I have been making this recipe for 2 years and this is my absolute go-to snacks/breakfast idea!

Emily - July 12, 2021, 2:34 p.m.

These are the most amazing muffins! Even though I don't make them fully vegan, double up on the cocoa and use less sugar (I think the bananas are sweet enough to just use 100g sugar), this is my favourite muffin recipe. They are ALWAYS a hit with everyone; people especially comment on the texture which is moist and fluffy. Even my slightly critical Dad asked me to send him the recipe. :)

I usually don't love chocolate-banana anything but I'd be lying if I said I haven't eaten several of these when I got peckish... They're simply divine.

PUL Team - July 16, 2021, 5:51 a.m.

So happy you're enjoying the muffins, Emily! Happy cooking :)

Newbie_Rookie_00 - Aug. 19, 2021, 6:29 a.m.

oOo I might have to tweak mine kind of like yours, PUL friend. :) I also make mine with a blend of both worlds.

Rachel - July 10, 2021, 3:29 a.m.

These are amazing!! So chocolatey and rich!

Maggie - July 9, 2021, 3:01 a.m.

I tried this recipe for a party. Everyone liked it!

Victoria - July 6, 2021, 7:28 p.m.

This recipe is amazing, super tasty! I made it as a cake instead of muffins, 30 minutes in the oven and it's ready, super rich and moist. Thank you!

PUL Team - July 7, 2021, 7:24 a.m.

So glad the recipe was a success, Victoria, thank you for sharing! 🙂

safiya - Aug. 11, 2021, 4:46 p.m.

So happy you enjoyed the muffins, Richa! 🙂

Gunja - April 9, 2021, 5:57 a.m.

A truly awesome muffin recipe! My Toddler loves these but I want to adapt the recipe to make mini muffins instead. What would be your suggestions? Thank you.

PUL Team - April 9, 2021, 11:15 p.m.

Hi Gunja! We're so happy to hear. Halving the recipe and using a mini muffin pan may be the easiest way. We'd suggest cutting down the baking time, perhaps to ~7 mins. Using a toothpick or fork may be helpful to know when they're ready as the baking time will be less 😀

Gunja - April 11, 2021, 1:51 a.m.

Thank you! Will give it a shot!

Mrs Process - April 6, 2021, 11:02 p.m.

Hi PUL! I'm trying to create healthy snacks for my kids to avoid giving them snacks with preservatives in them. So THANK YOU so much for this muffin recipe! What "grease" did you use to grease the muffin tin in the video? and was that regular paper napkin that you used to grease it? Is your muffin tin a non-stick one? If not, what type is it?

PUL Team - April 7, 2021, 6:29 a.m.

Hey there! A vegetable oil would work for greasing the muffin tin. A regular napkin as shown in the video works well for helping to evenly spread the oil. Alternatively, a reusable napkin, pastry brush, or muffin tin liner would work. The muffin tin we use can be found at https://amzn.to/35oLjj3. We hope this helps and happy baking 😀

Alessa - April 2, 2021, 3:11 p.m.

Sooooo tasty, thank you for this amazing recipe! 😊

PUL Team - April 3, 2021, 1:49 a.m.

Thanks so much, Alessa :)

Lisa - March 28, 2021, 1:31 p.m.

Best muffins EVER 😍

PUL Team - April 2, 2021, 10:20 p.m.

What a compliment! Thanks, Lisa :)

Roxana Gheorghiu - May 14, 2021, 10:55 p.m.

I fully suscribe! How come I had never tried these before? I am already a big fan of your double chocolate chip cookies and cowboy cookies. I prepared batches of them for my kids’ birthday parties and they impress children and adults alike. Thank you very much for your wonderful recipes!

Watching your videos on plant care have also been a true inspiration to me (I tend to over love even my cacti!) and I am now the proud owner of a beautifully delicate string of hearts and a small zz plant, and have propagated my monstera based on your advice. Much love

PUL Team - May 15, 2021, 9:01 p.m.

Aww this is so wonderful to hear, Roxana, thank you so much! We're so glad that you're enjoying PUL recipes and plant care videos 😃 A huge congrats on the success with your plants as well ✨
