Ingredients

Optional toppings

  • fresh mixed berries
  • powdered sugar
  • vegan ice cream

Directions

  1. In a large microwave-safe mug, mix together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Then add the milk, oil, and vanilla. Mix until just combined. Be careful not to over-mix.
  3. Using your fingers, press half of the chocolate into the middle of the cake batter in your mug. This is so you have some melted chocolate in the centre of your cake (yum!). Add the other half of the chocolate to the top of the batter.
  4. Microwave on high (800 - 900 W) for 2 minutes*, or until a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out clean. If the cake isn't cooked through yet, place it back in the microwave at intervals of 15 seconds.
  5. Let the mug cake cool slightly, add your desired toppings, and enjoy!

Notes

  • * If preferred, bake it in an oven-safe dish at 350°F (180°C) for 15 - 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out clean.

Storage

  • Best if enjoyed immediately.
  • Transfer to an airtight container and store in the fridge for up to 1 day.

Allie - Oct. 29, 2022, 8:39 a.m.

I was actually surprised that the instructions were so clear. I love the mug cake but it also took me quite a long time to buy the soy milk, baking powder and Dutch processed cocoa.

PUL Team - Oct. 30, 2022, 2:22 a.m.

Thanks for sharing, Allie, we hope if you give the recipe another try it will be quicker now that the ingredients are sourced 🙂

Ivy - Oct. 10, 2022, 1:06 a.m.

As good as u can buy in a supermarket.
U can be creative with the ingredients
I added blueberries and matcha powder. And I used 'hagelslag' I stead of blocks chocolate. Also I put a little kefir and regular milk instead of plant based milk.
Super yummy 😋

PUL Team - Oct. 10, 2022, 1:24 a.m.

Glad it was enjoyed with the modifications, Ivy. In case you're interested and haven't already seen it, we have a blueberry mug cake here: pickuplimes.com/recipe/vegan-… 🙂

Ivy - Oct. 10, 2022, 3:32 p.m.

Oehh thank u! I am definitely going to try it!

I'd love to try but I don't want to use any vegetable oil. What could I use as a substitute? I love watching your YouTube channel. You have such a lovely soothing voice!

PUL Team - Oct. 1, 2022, 8:23 a.m.

Hey Linda, thank you for the kind words and question! We've heard a few positive reviews for applesauce in place of the oil 🙂

Thanks for taking the time to share the review, Jane 🙂

Sam - July 25, 2022, 3:56 a.m.

Love love loved this! Did the chocolate mug cake with my fiancee for our 4 year anniversary and it was a hit! I like a lighter cake so I put a tiny splash more of oat milk so that it was fluffier. Sooooo yummy thank you so much!

PUL Team - July 26, 2022, 7:34 a.m.

Wishing you and your fiance the happiest anniversary, Sam! So glad the cake was enjoyed on the special occassion 😊

Claire - July 5, 2022, 12:22 a.m.

This was lovely, thanks Pick Up Limes team! I realised half way through I was out of oat milk so just used water and replaced the oil with a butter substitute to try and keep some of the creamyness, still worked! 😅

PUL Team - July 5, 2022, 1:54 a.m.

So happy to hear, Claire, love the modifications!

Katharina - June 17, 2022, 8:31 p.m.

PUL Team - June 11, 2022, 4:21 p.m.

So happy to hear, Martin, thank you!

Celine - June 9, 2022, 9:12 p.m.

This cake is supposed to just be easy and quick to make, and it totally is!! But it is also the best recipe on a chocolate cake, that I’ve ever made. Both me and my husband loves it.

PUL Team - June 10, 2022, 11:59 p.m.

Oh such a massive compliment, Celine! Thank you for the glowing feedback 🤗

Olivia - June 9, 2022, 9:03 p.m.

It means so much the mug cake is being enjoyed! Thank you, Olivia 🙂

Bin - June 9, 2022, 5:55 p.m.

Really loved this recipe, almost a go-to dessert in winter - don't skip the two pieces of chocolate in the middle and on the top, they really make a lot difference! Also I tried soy milk, almond milk and oat milk, I think the almond milk works the best for me.

PUL Team - June 10, 2022, 7:54 p.m.

Hey Bin! Thank you for taking the time to share, we're so happy to hear 😍

Justyna - June 9, 2022, 4:51 p.m.

I love this recipe, it's my go-to whenever I need a quick little something to pamper myself :) It's moist and delicious, and so easy to make, since I always have all the ingredients at home. I actually always use cacao instead of cocoa (1 tbsp of cacao is the perfect amount) and lower down on sugar a bit ;)

PUL Team - June 10, 2022, 7:37 p.m.

Thank you for sharing your experience with the mug cake, Justyna! Cacao powder sounds lovely 🙂

Christine - June 5, 2022, 6:19 a.m.

Followed the recipe exactly. My results were tasty, but the cake didn’t rise and was a bit dry and dense. Ate with vegan ice cream. 👍🏼

PUL Team - June 6, 2022, 8:19 p.m.

Hey there, Christine, thanks for the insight. In case you're interested, aiming to limit over-mixing and overcooking can help avoid the dry and dense texture:
-For over-mixing - When adding the milk, oil, and vanilla extract aim to mix until just combined rather than stirring extra. It can be tempting to get rid of all the clumps but overdoing it can lead to a rubbery texture!
-For overcooking - we'd also suggest cooking the cake in shorter intervals until done so you can keep a closer eye on it.

So glad the cake was still still enjoyed though, Christine, and vegan ice cream sounds lovely 😍

Zoe - May 30, 2022, 3:46 a.m.

My boyfriend call this the “hot chocolate cake”. It is delicious!!!

PUL Team - May 30, 2022, 6:31 a.m.

So thrilled it was enjoyed, Zoe!

Simmi :) - May 29, 2022, 6:15 p.m.

I absolutely love this recipe, watching Pick up Limes on YouTube is one of my favorite things to do and when I came across this recipe I quickly jumped onto the website, so simple and delicious and a perfect mid-day treat. Also thank you so much to the PUL team for all your efforts as I came out with a milk and egg allergy a couple of years back and as a vegetarian by choice, I thought being fully vegan would cause me so many issues but your channel has really supported me throughout my journey ! Thanks so much :)

PUL Team - May 30, 2022, 5:49 a.m.

Oh dearest Simmi, thank YOU for the glowing feedback and allowing PUL to be part of your journey. It means so much more than we can express ❣️

Simone - May 27, 2022, 7:29 a.m.

Is it okay if i skip vanilla extract and put maple syrup in it??

PUL Team - May 28, 2022, 10:23 p.m.

Hey Simone, we haven't tested it out but imagine it could work. It will make the mug cake more sweet and may impact the texture a tad but do let us know if you experiment with it 😃

Joscelyn - May 27, 2022, 2:18 a.m.

Do you need to use Dutch processed cocoa powder specifically or can you use any kind of cocoa powder? Can you use regular extra virgin olive for the vegetable oil? I want to try to use items that I already have in the pantry as opposed to buying more specific stuff I might not use again..

PUL Team - May 28, 2022, 10:17 p.m.

Hey Joscelyn! We prefer Dutch processed cocoa powder since it's sweeter in flavour and dissolves easily in liquid compared to natural cocoa powder which is more bitter. You could use the cocoa powder you already have on hand though. Extra virgin olive oil isn't the most stable oil in heat and tends to have a strong flavour so we'd recommend an alternative oil if possible for the best results. We hope this helps for now and do let us know how it goes if you give the mug cake a try 🙂

Joscelyn - May 28, 2022, 11:33 p.m.

Okay thank you. Which kind of vegetable oil would be best?

PUL Team - May 29, 2022, 5 p.m.

No problem, Joscelyn! In our grocery store it's labelled as "vegetable oil" although any mild flavour oil will do. Others could be refined olive oil, sunflower oil, or melted refined coconut oil.

Marilee - May 14, 2022, 3:37 a.m.

This is a really quick, easy and delicious cake. I made it with coconut oil, unsweetened coconut beverage, 1 tbsp of coconut sugar and 1 tbsp of cane sugar. It was perfect and moist! Thank you for sharing this, I will be making it again and again!

PUL Team - May 15, 2022, 12:35 a.m.

Thank you for sharing the modifications with us, Marilee, so glad the cake was enjoyed 😊

Molly - May 12, 2022, 6:27 p.m.

This is the perfect snack when I want something sweet!

PUL Team - May 13, 2022, 3:38 a.m.

We're so happy it's being enjoyed, Molly!

Aa'ishah - May 2, 2022, 8:09 p.m.

I started making the recipe and realized I had no milk so I just used water instead and it came out suuper light and fluffy! Honestly tasted better than the chocolate cake I bought from the cute bake shop last month !! 😂💗

PUL Team - May 2, 2022, 9:28 p.m.

Ooo so thrilled it was enjoyed, Aa'ishah, thanks for the insight 😃

Sony - April 30, 2022, 7:26 a.m.

Lily - March 26, 2022, 3:30 a.m.

So yummy 🤤, I didn’t have plant basses milk, so I just used cows milk and instead of chocolate I used frozen strawberries which tasted really goood, I definitely recommend using strawberries if you want to try something new👍👍👍

PUL Team - March 26, 2022, 11:30 p.m.

Strawberries sound lovely, Lily, thank you :)

Irine - March 22, 2022, 8:25 p.m.

I've tried to use water instead of milk onse, it's cheaper, and I liked it even more 😊 try if you want. It tastes more like a soft cookies 😋

PUL Team - March 24, 2022, 12:22 a.m.

Interesting tip, Irine, thank you!

Nyla Sine - March 21, 2022, 10:36 p.m.

I LOVED this recipe! I thought it was delicious 😋 I was a little worried for putting it in for 2 min but it was fine and raised perfectly! I also used normal milk instead of cant which I found works great also. I do Encourage others to use this recipe as it takes little time to make. 10/10 would make this mug cake again mug ☕️ 🍰

PUL Team - March 23, 2022, 5:16 a.m.

We appreciate the glowing review so much, Nyla Sine, thank you!

Linda - Feb. 28, 2022, 7:09 p.m.

Amazing Mug Cake! This recipe was delicious and will definitely be used again. It can be adjusted for Non-vegans making it the right recipe for me. Thank you for this delectable creation!

PUL Team - Feb. 28, 2022, 8:45 p.m.

So glad it was enjoyed, Linda, thank you :)

Nina - Feb. 24, 2022, 2:22 a.m.

The best mug cake I have had. so tasty! I enjoy topping it with peanut butter, honey or ginger syrup.
Must note the website is extremely thought out. The serving size button, picture's and allergies at the top. Clear, clean and free. Thank you for this wonderful creation!

Mmm the toppings sound lovely, Nina, and we appreciate the website feedback so much 😃

ALEXA - Feb. 20, 2022, 12:37 p.m.

I tried it and was supremely delicious but is there any suggestion on what type of vegetable oil we should use?
I tried coconut oil but there was this smell of coconut. but the taste, the texture, color everything came so well. Thank you for this recipe I personally liked it som much!!!

PUL Team - Feb. 20, 2022, 9:49 p.m.

Hi Alexa! You could use a neutral vegetable oil, such as refined olive oil that doesn't impart the olive oil taste. Refined coconut oil is coconut oil that doesn't smell or taste like coconuts so that's another alternative if accessible 😊

Joanna - Feb. 10, 2022, 3:51 p.m.

Hi PUL team, I tried the recipe out as I'm thinking of serving this at a dinner party with friends and it turned out very tasty, but my mug was big, so it was a half-a-mug cake for me :). Probably gonna try a smaller cup or ramekins for guests.
My question is can the batter be mixed up ahead of time and just popped in the microwave once we are ready for dessert, or will the baking powder react with the wet ingredients and cause the cakes to not rise when cooked if the batter sits too long?

PUL Team - Feb. 11, 2022, 12:53 a.m.

Hey Joanna! Thanks for sharing your experience with it 😃 We haven't experimented with it, but imagine if the batter was refrigerated it could be fine to rest shortly. We'd still recommend microwaving shortly after preparing the batter if possible for best results. Let us know how it goes if you experiment with it!

Isobelle - Feb. 1, 2022, 10:26 p.m.

Delicious! I've made this every evening the past week and it's now one of the highlights of my day. Some variations I've tried include adding in ground coffee, cinnamon or topping with berry chia jam. I love that it can be made in 5 minutes!

PUL Team - Feb. 2, 2022, 7:46 a.m.

Such delicious variations, Isobelle, thank you :D

Just divine 😁 just what I need on an afternoon to regain energy to play with my little one! I just used rye flour and coconut sugar instead.

PUL Team - Jan. 15, 2022, 8:07 p.m.

Thanks for sharing your experience with it, Ana-Claudia!

Rahma - Jan. 10, 2022, 10:44 a.m.

This is a super popular and successful recipe, no wonder it had 5 stars from 77 reviews. It turned out great with me! Before I saw this recipe, I followed the exact same recipe except that it said 3 tbsp of all-purpose flour and not 2. This one proved to be much much better and more successful. Thank you so much!
Also, I have a question: can I also use self-raising flour at times instead of all-purpose? Will the outcome be better? Take your time in giving me your answer, I am always available. Have a good day!

PUL Team - Jan. 11, 2022, 4:36 p.m.

We're so glad it was enjoyed, Rahma! Thanks for the question. Self-rising flour is all-purpose flour, but with baking powder, and sometimes salt added to it. When too much baking powder is used, you might find recipes rise too much and then collapse.

Due to this, for recipes that include baking powder and salt, such as baked goods, we'd recommend that for every cup of all-purpose flour substituted with self-rising flour, to reduce the amount of baking powder by 1 and 1/2 tsp, and reduce the amount of salt by around 1/4 tsp. In recipes with less than a cup, such as this one, you could experiment without adjusting the baking powder and salt if desired. We hope this helps for now!

Mandi - Dec. 28, 2021, 3:04 p.m.

Whenever I feel like something sweet this is my go-to...
Love this recipe :)

So happy to hear, Mandi!

Eliana - Dec. 27, 2021, 7:19 p.m.

Thank you so much this is AMAZING!!! Would it work if I used almond flour?

PUL Team - Dec. 28, 2021, 2:24 a.m.

Thank YOU, Eliana, for the kind words! We've heard positive reviews with almond flour. Do let us know if you test it out yourself 😃

Alesia - Dec. 9, 2021, 7:46 a.m.

My absolute favourite

Chris - Oct. 29, 2021, 8:49 p.m.

My go to mug cake ❤

Tala - Oct. 27, 2021, 7:53 p.m.

Simply the best mug cake recipe! I used oat milk instead of soy and it turned out delicious.

Eliana - Dec. 27, 2021, 7:20 p.m.

that is good to know- oat is my favorite plant-based milk!

Jane - Oct. 20, 2021, 8:44 p.m.

First ever mug cake recipe i found the motivation to make since it looked the best, and I loved the ingredients to boot - and oh man, was this so good!!!! I will say with all the other recipes out there mug cake, why should we overly complicate it? Not having eggs and milk on hand, and having to melt butter, not only defeats the purpose of something quick and easy, but definitely (after tasting this), is totally unnecessary if I do say so myself!! I love this, will definitely keep on hand!💕 Side note for my experience; i switched the milk to Almond, did a combo of olive oil and canola, and broke up mini Ghirardelli chocolate bars into chunks and viola! Absolutely delicious!✨✨ Thank you for the recipe, and I love the site and will explore the rest of your awesome recipes!! 💛

PUL Team - Oct. 21, 2021, 1:45 a.m.

Mmm sounds so delcious, Jane, thank you for sharing your experience with this one! We're so happy it was enjoyed. Happy cooking 🤗

Shannen - Oct. 19, 2021, 2:23 p.m.

This recipe comes out perfect! Nice and moist and fluffy! I know its lazy but I almost want to experiment with making a whole spoon cake in the microwave with this recipe.

PUL Team - Oct. 19, 2021, 4:40 p.m.

This means so much, Shannen! Let us know if you experiment with it 😎

Aman - Oct. 16, 2021, 4:15 a.m.

This is such a neat idea. The double chocolate cake turned out really good. As someone who loves to bake a layered cake, I enjoyed making this with my kiddo! So good. Thank you for sharing.

PUL Team - Oct. 16, 2021, 4:17 a.m.

We appreciate this so much, Aman! Hugs to you and your kiddo 🤗

Annie - Oct. 15, 2021, 5:26 a.m.

Yummy!! This was a perfect and comforting soft treat after my root canal 😊 We used spelt flour and it turned out very yummy. The mug cake was pretty big though! Next time make sure you have someone to share with 👯‍♀️

PUL Team - Oct. 15, 2021, 5:55 a.m.

So happy to hear, Annie, and wishing you a speedy recovery!

Teja - Oct. 14, 2021, 12:38 a.m.

This was the first mug cake I've ever made and it was perfect. I used Oat Milk. I actually didn't have cocoa powder, but I've had a huge tub of Starbucks hot cocoa mix, that is likely 1/2 cocoa and 1/2 sugar. So I followed the recipe and subbed the 2tbsp cocoa + 2tbsp sugar for 4tbsp Starbucks hot cocoa mix and it was perfect, the texture was surprisingly good and it came together so fast! I didn't add chocolate squares to make it double chocolate, I was content with just single chocolate I suppose. Great recipe Sadia!

PUL Team - Oct. 14, 2021, 3:25 a.m.

Mmm lovely idea to adapt the recipe, Teja! We're so happy the mug cake was enjoyed 😃

Deb - Oct. 11, 2021, 8:09 a.m.

I tried the chocolate mug cake with some fresh strawberries tonight. Loved it! Super easy and delicious. Hits the spot! I love that I can just pop it in the microwave. Love your videos too.

PUL Team - Oct. 11, 2021, 11:02 p.m.

Mm strawberries sound lovely, Deb, so happy the mug cake is being enjoyed ✨

Sonal - Oct. 6, 2021, 7:48 p.m.

Which gluten free flower would you suggest as a substitute to all purpose?

PUL Team - Oct. 7, 2021, 8:51 p.m.

Hey there, Sonal! We haven't tested it out, but we've heard positive reviews with almond flour, oat flour, rice flour, and pre-mixed gluten-free flours such as Bob's Red Mills. Do let us know how it goes if you experiment with it ✨

Mankind Fe - Sept. 29, 2021, 9:48 p.m.

Oh just lovely! I just watched your YouTube video of 5 different mug cake recipes! Went with chocolate! Watched until the end of the video where you shared your website and how you can "cross" each direction off the list! Knew I would like that! So I clicked on the link! Had some SPECIAL dark cocao powder in the cabinet! Followed the directions and now I'm enjoying this warm chocolate cake in a mug! Thanks for sharing!

PUL Team - Oct. 1, 2021, 6:36 p.m.

Aw, this is so lovely to hear, Mankind, thank you! It means so much that the mug cake and new website functionalities are being enjoyed 😃

Jea York - Sept. 27, 2021, 5:07 p.m.

Love this recipe perfect for the afternoon sweet fix. I am gluten free| dairy free| Processed sugar free so I made a few adjustments +Used Bob’s Redmill 1-1 GF replacement flour same measurements + cacao + 3 TBSP Maple syrup instead of sugar. It worked great and had the cake texture of a chocolate lava cake. Love these mug cakes way to go making these, also perfect after school snacks for the healthier ones. You guys rock! Keep up the Amazing work.

PUL Team - Sept. 29, 2021, 6:25 p.m.

Thank you for sharing your experience with the mug cake, Jea, we're so happy it was enjoyed 🙂

❤️👏😍 simplesmente amo todas essas receitas maravilhosas deliciosas que nos ensina 🍃🌿😊🤗

Farah - Sept. 24, 2021, 10:06 p.m.

Hey Sadia!

This recipe is probably the best recipe for a mug cake I have ever come across. And the fact that it is vegan is amazing. Can you tell me if I can double the recipe and if so what the time would be, still 2 mins?

PUL Team - Sept. 26, 2021, 5:37 p.m.

Hey Farah! Thanks for the question and kind words 😃 You can double the recipe, although the exact cook time may depend on your microwave. We'd suggest microwaving for 2 and a half minutes to start based on other reviewers. If the cake isn't cooked through yet, simply place it back in the microwave at intervals of 15 seconds until done. Alternatively, you could make two cakes in two mugs separately for ~2 minutes each if desired 😊

Sara - Sept. 15, 2021, 6:58 p.m.

So easy and delicious!

Cherryl Katjivena - Sept. 14, 2021, 10:50 p.m.

Absolutely delicious! A winner

Toula - Sept. 9, 2021, 7:24 p.m.

Truly the best mug I have ever made.
Alternatives I used:
-Coconut sugar instead of granulated,
-Almond milk instead of soy,
-Nearly 3 tbsp of oat flour instead of all-purpose and
-2 tbsp of dark chocolate chips.

SO EPIC.

PUL Team - Sept. 12, 2021, 2:44 a.m.

Hi, Toula! Thanks for sharing your experience with the recipe with us 🙂

Natalie - Sept. 6, 2021, 5:19 a.m.

Delicious! It feels a bit magical that you can get such a nice, fluffy cake with just a couple minutes in the microwave! I threw a few halved cherries into the mix, which was a great addition.

PUL Team - Sept. 6, 2021, 6:13 p.m.

Mmm cherries are a delicious idea! Thank you, Natalie, for the incredible review 😃

Catherine - Sept. 6, 2021, 3:17 a.m.

Such a perfect recipe for a single dessert for a late night sweet tooth. We don’t keep a lot of sweets at the house but this is a perfect single serving to enjoy a sweet treat!

PUL Team - Sept. 6, 2021, 6:04 p.m.

Made this a while ago and loved it! One was enough for 2 of us

10/10 recommend - Aug. 15, 2021, 11:15 p.m.

10/10 totally recommend

This legitimately takes me 5 minutes to prepare! I personally use regular 2% milk because I don’t have vegan dairy but it comes out perfectly all the same :))

you NEED to try this, take it from me ;)

Marta - Aug. 14, 2021, 10:22 p.m.

I've made all the mug cakes from the video and they're all unbelievably delicious. Just WOW. When I first made the chocolate one I felt like eating a regular amazing warm brownie which I've never felt with mug cakes before. Great job, thank you!!! <3

PUL Team - Aug. 15, 2021, 10:38 p.m.

Aww we're so glad you enjoyed all the mug cakes, Marta! Thank YOU 🥰

Hannah - Aug. 7, 2021, 3:10 a.m.

This recipe is super delicious! One thing I like to do is sub out some of the cocoa powder for powdered peanut butter!

PUL Team - Aug. 7, 2021, 3:14 a.m.

Ooo interesting idea, Hannah, thanks for sharing :)

Toula - Sept. 9, 2021, 7:25 p.m.

At first I was very skeptical about mug cakes but it turned out amazing! quick and satisfying :)

Kayla - July 27, 2021, 6:46 a.m.

I have never trusted any mug cake recipe before but when I saw PUL had a recipe I thought if I was ever going to try a recipe, it would be Sadia's. I have made so many PUL recipes and not a single one has failed me, so I had to give this recipe a shot. I'm so super happy I did because I have lost count how many times I've made this recipe for me and my family, it is the absolute best thing for a desperate last minute chocolate fix! Thank you so so much!!!

PUL Team - July 28, 2021, 8:03 a.m.

Aww this means so much, Kayla, thank YOU for the glowing review and support! We're so grateful to have you here 💚

Nina - July 25, 2021, 1:15 a.m.

Microwave mug cakes don’t always work with me but this recipe worked every time. It’s my go to for when I’m craving something sweet or chocolatey and it tastes so good for the little effort you put in!

PUL Team - July 25, 2021, 7:50 p.m.

We're so thrilled you enjoyed this one, Nina, thank you for sharing 😊

Vivian H. - July 23, 2021, 11:16 a.m.

One of the best mug cakes recipes ever. This is my go-to for a quick sweet snack.
Usually I substitute about 6 grams of the flour with vegan hazelnut protein powder and it's amazing.

Terri - July 23, 2021, 11:10 a.m.

This is my go to everytime I want a quick and easy chocolate cake. I use gluten free flower and it works perfectly

Mimmi - July 22, 2021, 9:13 p.m.

Beth - July 20, 2021, 7:19 p.m.

Such a delicious mug cake! I’ve made it multiple times and once with gluten free flour I needed to use up and it worked really well with that too :)

PUL Team - July 21, 2021, 3:23 a.m.

Thanks for sharing this with us, Beth, it's so appreciated! 🙂

Nidhi - July 15, 2021, 5:53 p.m.

Just tried this - LOVED it! This is the first mug cake recipe that's really worked for me - will forever be indebted for that!

Karina - July 15, 2021, 5 p.m.

I've already made this double chocolate mug cake so many times. Just a quick desert or when you want some cake, but you're the only one eating. I've previously made microwave mug cakes with egg, and they weren't nice, but couldn't find an eggless recipe I trusted. But the you cane along and there was so much deliciousness.
Because the mug cake ist heavy on the dark side, I enjoy it with an scoop of vanilla ice cream. Thank you so much for sharing

PUL Team - July 18, 2021, 1:58 a.m.

We're so grateful for the glowing review, Karina, it means so much! We're so thrilled you're enjoying the mug cake 🤩

Stephanie - July 14, 2021, 9:27 a.m.

I've tried the double choc and the blueberry mug cakes and they were both quick and simple to prepare and yummy to eat. When you want something sweet but not necessarily a whole cake hanging around to tempt you afterwards, these are just perfect. I will be making them again.

PUL Team - July 18, 2021, 12:24 a.m.

We're so glad you're enjoy the mug cakes, Stephanie, thank you for the lovely review! ✨

This is so gooood !

Lorraine - July 10, 2021, 1:08 p.m.

Recette simple, rapide et délicieuse !
Un petit plaisir du soir bien apprécié ^^

Maddi - July 9, 2021, 8:13 p.m.

This is the BEST mug cake and is so quick to make!

Erin - July 9, 2021, 7:58 p.m.

Oh my goodness the number of times I have reached for this recipe to satisfy my late night sweet tooth. So easy and yummy!

Maddy - July 9, 2021, 2:27 p.m.

The BEST mug cake I have ever made. So chocolates and decadent. Thank you for this gift!!

Lisa - July 9, 2021, 3:20 a.m.

Most of the mug cakes I've tried previously have been gooey so I was just convinced microwaves can't make a good mug cake! But I tried this one last night when I was still peckish after dinner and it was INCREDIBLE - the texture is exactly like an oven-baked cake. It cooked perfectly even in my terrible microwave :) 2 tablespoons of sugar sounds like a lot but the resulting cake wasn't sweet at all, it resembled dark chocolate. Sadia's mug cakes are my go-to babysitting activity when it's night time and they want a snack before bed!

PUL Team - July 12, 2021, 5:30 a.m.

We're so appreciative of the incredible review, Lisa! So glad the mug cake has been enjoyed ✨

Rosmari - July 9, 2021, 1:58 a.m.

Esto se ha convertido en una adicción 🤤🤤

Cari - Aug. 26, 2021, 6:19 p.m.

Para nosotros también, queda delicioso!!

Victoria - July 8, 2021, 7:28 p.m.

This was amazing! Very light yet chocolatey enough. I did chocolate chips instead of the nugget in the middle like you did. I've made a few mug cakes before and they've always been a bit gummy, perhaps from the egg. Even my fiance was impressed!

PUL Team - July 10, 2021, 6:53 p.m.

Love using chocolate chips! so glad you and your fiance enjoyed this one, Lana 🤗

Sarah - July 8, 2021, 6:43 p.m.

Soooo good & so easy! I add a few pieces of chopped crystallised ginger to make it super grown-up. Still can’t decide between this or the PB & J as my favourite - both are winners!

PUL Team - July 10, 2021, 3:29 p.m.

We're so happy to hear you've been enjoying the mug cake recipes, Sarah! 🥰

Morgane - July 8, 2021, 6:18 p.m.

Life saving when a chocolate craving hits, and the first mugcake recipe I've tried that actually worked!

PUL Team - July 10, 2021, 3:14 p.m.

So glad the recipe has been enjoyed, Morgane!

Mayura - June 30, 2021, 12:05 a.m.

Sadia, we loved the chocolate mug cake!! Baked it with my 3yr old and he was jumping more than me once the cake baked. I didn't have flour at home so substituted with almond flour and it was delicious. Thank you so much for sharing the wonderful recipe. Will try the other mug cakes.

PUL Team - June 30, 2021, 3:44 a.m.

Aww that sounds so adorable, Mayura, thank you for sharing! So glad the mug cake was enjoyed 🤗

Ayesha S - June 27, 2021, 12:45 a.m.

Made the chocolate mug cake for the family and OMG - better than any posh vegan desserts everrrrr. You are amazing, thank you for this!

Lynn - June 24, 2021, 3:36 a.m.

Love this recipe! I have been trying mug cakes recipes for a few weeks now and this one is hands down my favorite. I used gluten-free powder, cacao powder, hemp milk, and used half raw cane sugar and half swerve sweetener. I also added walnuts and the mug cake was DELICIOUS. Warm, chocolatey, a little gooey and a slight crunch with the walnuts. Topped it off with some soy vanilla ice cream and *chef's kiss* perfect. lol

PUL Team - June 24, 2021, 6:27 a.m.

Mmm soy ice cream is a lovely topping! Thank you for the incredible review and for sharing your experience, Lynn 🥳

Victoria Toms - June 23, 2021, 8:34 p.m.

I would love to make these recipes they look delicious I don't have a microwave. we believes that they're unhealthy for you. Can I use an oven in a different pan with the same directions or similar I'm not that good of a baker. so following your recipes have been awesome to me because they're so easy to follow and do myself!

PUL Team - June 24, 2021, 6:18 a.m.

Hello, Victoria! You can bake it in the oven at 350°F (180°C) for ~15 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out clean. Just be sure to use an oven-safe baking dish 😊 Happy baking!

Victoria - June 24, 2021, 7:08 p.m.

I'm excited to try them ! Thank you so much for your time ❤️ love your cooking

Erin - June 20, 2021, 10:20 p.m.

I've made mug cakes before but they NEVER tasted like this! I can't believe how delicious this was. I had the Vegan Protein Lettuce Wraps for dinner and needed something chocolate after and HELLO! This was so simple and delicious, I can't wait to try the other mug cake recipes!

PUL Team - June 21, 2021, 6:50 a.m.

Thank YOU for the incredible review, Erin, it means so much! We hope you love the other mug cakes just as much 😃

Bipasha - June 14, 2021, 12:12 p.m.

Hi!! Loved seeing these mug cakes being made by you! They looked so easy that thought of trying a couple of them....& they came out WONDERFUL. Simply loved the chocolate & the peanut butter- blueberry mug cakes. Thanks for these lovely easy & yummy recipes.

PUL Team - June 14, 2021, 3:21 p.m.

Woohoo! We're so glad you enjoyed the mug cakes, Bipasha 🤗

Gabi - June 14, 2021, 12:45 a.m.

What an incredible recipe. I've made it a few times now since you've posted it, five or so, and made it for my partner as well and we both love it. We keep buying vanilla soy milk, so that's what we used. It's sooo gooood!

PUL Team - June 14, 2021, 6:24 a.m.

Mmm sounds so delicious, Gabi, thank you for sharing! So kind of you to make it for your partner too 😃

Esha - June 12, 2021, 7:17 p.m.

Made this amazing cake! Love the feature of changing the serving size ❤️ Though the mug cake tasted really nice and chocolate-y, mine turned out to be a little dry and crusty....any reason why that happened?

PUL Team - June 13, 2021, 12:59 a.m.

We're so glad you're enjoying the new site features, Esha! The dryness may have been from the cake being in the microwave for a tad bit too long. Microwaves are tricky since they're all so different, but reducing the cooking time by 30 seconds may be a good place to start. Do let us know if this helps!

Jain - June 11, 2021, 6:40 p.m.

What a great recipe! 5 minutes total, no dishes, delicious. I don't have much of a sweet tooth and haven't had cake in 10 years or more. I've made this 10 times since you posted it.

It's *perfect* as written. But I couldn't help but play with it. 90 seconds was ideal in my microwave (unsure of the wattage). Gluten-free flour worked great for my gluten-free sister. I tried swapping apple sauce for the oil and it kind of worked. I've added cherries (dried and fresh), espresso powder, black and English walnuts, and vegan marshmallows (oops, they exploded). I'll try crushed candy canes when they're in season.

Thank you, thank you!

PUL Team - June 12, 2021, 11:53 p.m.

Thank YOU, Jain, this is so incredible to hear! What great ideas to experiment with too 😍 We love the crushed candy cane idea 🤤

*Thanks*

Poorvi Angel - June 9, 2021, 12:28 p.m.

Incredible,Sadia,I tried it yesterday. It's amazing. Just that I am not vegan. So I made it non-vegan.
By replacing the plant-based milk with regular milk. It still tasted yummy!
This for the amazing recipe!!!

Yun - June 3, 2021, 4:57 a.m.

So easy and delicious! I used wholemeal flour and it turned out perfectly. Thank you PUL for these amazing recipes (and website UX wow)

PUL Team - June 5, 2021, 7:56 p.m.

Thank you for sharing, Yun! So glad you enjoyed the recipe and new website functionalities 😃

Un Yh - May 31, 2021, 2:01 a.m.

This was a wonderful dessert. I topped it with frozen berries and they made it so much more delicious.

Charlotte Steele - May 30, 2021, 12:12 a.m.

Can’t wait to try this but I was wondering what kind of sugar you use, it looks light brown. Is it brown sugar? When I see a recipe for granulated sugar I think of regular white sugar? By the way love your recipes, you are very talented!

PUL Team - May 30, 2021, 8:42 a.m.

Hi Charlotte, that's a wonderful question! We used raw sugar in the video. White granulated sugar in the Netherlands is vegan, but some white granulated sugar in North America is not, so to avoid confusion we use raw sugar for our recipes generally 🤗

Vivien - May 29, 2021, 7:30 a.m.

Just made the chocolate mug cake, and oh it’s so easy and sooo good! I only had brown sugar and it turned out well. The Amazon links are also super helpful. I get an idea of the brands you use and I can get them from the supermarket. Thank you!

Jane - May 27, 2021, 1:06 p.m.

This looks good but I would love to see salt oil & sugar free recipes. Thank you

PUL Team - May 28, 2021, 2:01 a.m.

Thank you for the request, Jane 😊 You may be interested in our two-bite brownies recipe: pickuplimes.com/recipe/sugar-…

Ariane - May 23, 2021, 10:51 p.m.

Awesome! I used Bobs Red Mill Gluten Free flour and coconut sugar, it worked out great! Thank you for these amazing recipes!

PUL Team - May 24, 2021, 7:48 a.m.

We appreciate the insight on using gluten-free flour and coconut sugar! Thank you, Ariane 🙂

Shweta - May 22, 2021, 6:27 p.m.

Love it! Soft, chocolatey with that extra melted chocolate ! Best easy mug cake

Maeko - May 20, 2021, 4:22 a.m.

This is so yummy! We are gluten free in our household so I used Bobs Redmill One to One GF flour. Worked perfectly! Love it!

PUL Team - May 22, 2021, 8:55 p.m.

Thank you for sharing this, Maeko! 😃

Mila - May 14, 2021, 3:49 p.m.

Ads are really annoying. Shame you have them, I loved pick up limes for not doing that...

PUL Team - May 15, 2021, 10:21 p.m.

Hey there, Mila! Thank you for your honest feedback, it's super helpful for us to learn and improve. For the time being, ads are helping support our costs to run the website so that we can continue to share recipes for free, although we totally recognize they can be annoying and we are trying to minimize the impact on the overall experience. Perhaps using an ad blocker may help minimize them on your end in the meantime ✨🤗

Bronwyn - May 31, 2021, 7:24 a.m.

I totally get that ads are annoying but it’s such a great simple way for awesome small businesses to stay afloat to continue producing amazing original content :) Always important to consider other perspectives...having PUL stay not bankrupt > not having a couple ads. :)

Sarika Bansal - May 13, 2021, 9:30 a.m.

Wow this was so easy and delicious!! I used coconut milk, which gave it a super strong coconut flavor - would probably try oat milk or something else next time. This is so perfect for when you have a random dessert craving but don't have anything at home to satisfy it :)

Zini - May 12, 2021, 10:08 p.m.

I want to try making this with my kids. Any suggestion on healthier alternate flour options? Could these be made with oat flour and still turn out yum?

PUL Team - May 13, 2021, 7:05 a.m.

Hey there Zini, we haven't personally tested this one out with oat flour so we can't say for certain. We'd recommend trying half oat and half all-purpose flour to start, and see if you like the flavour and texture 😊 Since oat flour is usually gluten-free, the cake may be a tad more crumbly 🍰

Some members of our PUL family have had some luck with oat flour in our banana bread mug cake recipe if you're looking for another option too! pickuplimes.com/recipe/banana…

Amelie - May 12, 2021, 4:51 p.m.

Tried the chocolate one as well as the blueberry one with a glutenfree flour mixture and they both turned out delicious!!! Thanks for the quick easy and delicious recipes.

PUL Team - May 13, 2021, 5:11 a.m.

Ooo so glad the gluten-free flour mixture worked! Thanks so much for sharing this, Amelie☺️

DA - May 12, 2021, 11:41 a.m.

My 7 year old made this and it was super easy. We found that the cocoa was too over powering. Maybe the taste is suitable for adults. Will reduce cocoa next time. Thanks for sharing.

PUL Team - May 13, 2021, 4:55 a.m.

Aww so lovely that your little one is getting involved in the kitchen, DA! Totally fair that the cocoa may be a bit too strong for more sensitive taste buds. Adding a bit of salt can also help make the cocoa less sharp 🙂

Julia - May 10, 2021, 3:30 p.m.

I love your channels an recipes and especially the relationship to food you help other people to build!

Still I have to say I'm disappointed that you're supporting amazon, I have the feeling it doesn't really fit with everything else the channel stands for

PUL Team - May 11, 2021, 5:04 a.m.

Hey there, Julia, thank you so much for the review and honest feedback! It's so appreciated as it helps us grow. Our aim for the links is mainly to help share with our audience the products/brands we use as we often get asked. This way they can find the closest equivalent wherever they choose, whether that be Amazon or elsewhere ✨🥰

Claudia - April 29, 2021, 4:44 p.m.

We always have to travel quite far to get some chocolate muffins. I had never thought I could make one on my own. My boyfriend and I just made one this morning following your recipe and we couldn't believe how quick, easy, and tasty it is! You guys are truly amazing. Thank you so much PUL!! <3

PUL Team - April 26, 2021, 6:15 a.m.

Ooo we appreciate this so much, Emily! So happy you and your boyfriend enjoyed the muffins 🥳

Karolina - April 24, 2021, 8:02 p.m.

The best quick desert recipe ever! Super delicious. I used coconut milk and rice flour and came out incredible. Will do it again for sure, thank you so much.

PUL Team - April 25, 2021, 1:28 a.m.

So glad you enjoyed the mug cake, Karolina! Thank you :)

Zini - May 12, 2021, 10:09 p.m.

Karolina, did you keep the proportion the same with rice flour?

Aoife Ryan - April 23, 2021, 9:47 p.m.

These were amazing! Super easy to make and accurate measurements too!

PUL Team - April 24, 2021, 3:33 a.m.

Thanks, Aoife! We appreciate the lovely review 🤗

Katherine Ruckle - April 23, 2021, 4:16 p.m.

Mug cakes have only ever brought me heartbreak and disappointment. However, yesterday when my partner was craving cake but we were both feeling too lazy and comfy to go to the store, I remebered this video. THEY WERE SO GOOD!!! He tried the banana, replacing the flaxseed with almond butter and it was so moist and yummy. I tried the chocolate one and loved that I got to customize it for my medical needs by taking out salt and reducing sugar. I topped it with fresh berries and a drizzle of almond butter and our night got 1000% cozier! Thank you so much!

PUL Team - April 24, 2021, 3:32 a.m.

We're so happy that you enjoyed the mug cake, Katherine! Thank you for sharing your substitutes and the awesome review :D

Roxy - April 21, 2021, 1:20 p.m.

I tried many pick-up limes recipes and enjoyed them all, but sadly didn't have luck with this one! Tried to bake it twice, using different mugs and decreasing temperature from 800w to 650w, but each time a piece of chocolate placed inside turned into a piece of charcoal, while the texture of the rest was perfectly fluffy... Any suggestions how to avoid it?

Hi Roxy, that's unfortunate to hear! It may be that your microwave is quite powerful or disperses air differently throughout. Microwaving for shorter increments of time at the lower temperature should help prevent the chocolate bits from burning! This way you can check in on it more often before it gets to the point of burning. You could also try stirring the mixture to help disperse the chocolate bits before they burn. Microwaves are a bit tricky since each one is different but do let us know if that helps! 😃

OMG it actually works! Took me three minutes in total and it tastes so so good. Thank you so much!

Success!! So happy to hear, Yi 😍

I watched the video and knew I had to try this recipe ASAP. I didn't have any bar chocolate, so I just left it out. I accidentally added a 1/2 tsp of vanilla, but it's fine because I love vanilla. I used almond milk because it's what I have. I also want to try subbing some of the milk for brewed coffee, because I hear that is a good flavor combination: coffee and chocolate. And my microwave is 1000 watts, so I only had to microwave it for about 1 minute and 15 seconds. It was SO fluffy and delicious! Probably one of the best mug cake recipes I have ever tried. Thank you so much! I will be trying the Peanut Butter and Jelly Mug Cake later!

Ooo all wonderful additions, Jeffrey! We're so glad you enjoyed it and hope you love the Peanut Butter and Jelly Mug Cake just as much 😃

Love it! I used oat milk and it turned out excellent. Actually got nervous it “wasn’t enough “ but ended up very full and left a couple bites in the mug.

My new favorite!

We're so glad the mug cake was a success! Thank you :D

This looks so good, as do the other mug receipes! I am really trying to avoid oils. Is there a substitution that could work? Would apple sauce work? Or any suggestion if I'm trying to avoid oils?

Lily - April 18, 2021, 3:03 a.m.

Hi Joan! I just tried it with apple sauce (same amount) and it turned out great (:

Amrita - April 16, 2021, 8:57 p.m.

I actually watched the new video as I was eating lunch (potato and green pea curry via PUL, of course) and decided I could do with something sweet. Didn't have a microwave, didn't have sprinkles, didn't have an oven-safe mug, so I used my oven, threw in some dark chocolate chunks, and used a bowl and it turned out great - just the right quantity and also the right amount of sweet, warm vanilla-ey (?) goodness!

Amrita - April 16, 2021, 8:59 p.m.

Oooh, looks like I posted this on the wrong recipe page. Well I kind of mixed together the vanilla birthday cake and the double chocolate recipe, so I guess it's still ok!

PUL Team - April 19, 2021, 2:15 a.m.

Mm that sounds like a delicious mix, Amrita! Thank you for sharing and we're so glad you enjoyed it 😁

Krista - April 16, 2021, 7:59 p.m.

What do you do if you don't have a microwave? These look so delish! Thank you!

theyellowducky - April 17, 2021, 5:34 a.m.

In the video, she mentioned that you could also bake any of these mug cake recipes in the oven if you didn’t have a microwave. I can’t remember the exact time and temperature mentioned, so check back in the video. I hope it works out!! :)

PUL Team - April 19, 2021, 2:10 a.m.

A wonderful question, Krista! If you don't have a microwave, you can bake it in the oven at 350°F (180°C) for 15 - 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out clean. Just be sure to use an oven-safe baking dish. We hope you enjoy the recipe!
