Double Chocolate Mug Cake
10 ingredients or less
2 Tbsp (17 g)all-purpose flour
2 Tbsp (13 g)
2 Tbsp (28 g)granulated sugar
¼ tspbaking powder
3 Tbsp (45 mL)unsweetened soy milk
1 Tbsp (15 mL)vegetable oil
0.7 oz (20 g)
fresh mixed berries
vegan ice cream
- In a large microwave-safe mug, mix together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Then add the milk, oil, and vanilla. Mix until just combined. Be careful not to over-mix.
- Using your fingers, press half of the chocolate into the middle of the cake batter in your mug. This is so you have some melted chocolate in the centre of your cake (yum!). Add the other half of the chocolate to the top of the batter.
- Microwave on high (800 - 900 W) for 2 minutes*, or until a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out clean. If the cake isn't cooked through yet, place it back in the microwave at intervals of 15 seconds.
- Let the mug cake cool slightly, add your desired toppings, and enjoy!
- * If preferred, bake it in an oven-safe dish at 350°F (180°C) for 15 - 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out clean.
- Best if enjoyed immediately.
- Transfer to an airtight container and store in the fridge for up to 1 day.

This is so delicious! I need to be more patient next time as mine wasn’t fully cooked in the first 2 mins so I turned up the heat and cooked it for another minute and ended up burning it a bit. Still so tasty though! I added a dash of cinnamon and instant coffee granules and it was amazing.
I'm enjoying this one right now. Mmmm so sweet and chocolaty Tomorrow's my birthday and I'm going to celebrate with just one friend. One mug cake per person will be enough so I decided to test this chocolate version. Maybe I'll make a different one tomorrow, we'll see 😉

TBH this is the only chocolate mug cake that meets my standards. the texture actually comes out soft & fluffy, unlike so many other mug cakes that i've tried! i also love the chocolate centre hehe. hands down, one of my favourite midnight snacks!

Even replacing the wheat flour for rice or corn flour or mixing up the taste-giving-ingredient (chocolate, berries, banana) for whatever else is at hand - it still works perfectly and tastes glorious.

I added blueberries and matcha powder. And I used 'hagelslag' I stead of blocks chocolate. Also I put a little kefir and regular milk instead of plant based milk.

Really loved this recipe, almost a go-to dessert in winter - don't skip the two pieces of chocolate in the middle and on the top, they really make a lot difference! Also I tried soy milk, almond milk and oat milk, I think the almond milk works the best for me.
I love this recipe, it's my go-to whenever I need a quick little something to pamper myself :) It's moist and delicious, and so easy to make, since I always have all the ingredients at home. I actually always use cacao instead of cocoa (1 tbsp of cacao is the perfect amount) and lower down on sugar a bit ;)

Do you need to use Dutch processed cocoa powder specifically or can you use any kind of cocoa powder? Can you use regular extra virgin olive for the vegetable oil? I want to try to use items that I already have in the pantry as opposed to buying more specific stuff I might not use again..
This is a really quick, easy and delicious cake. I made it with coconut oil, unsweetened coconut beverage, 1 tbsp of coconut sugar and 1 tbsp of cane sugar. It was perfect and moist! Thank you for sharing this, I will be making it again and again!

Hi PUL team, I tried the recipe out as I'm thinking of serving this at a dinner party with friends and it turned out very tasty, but my mug was big, so it was a half-a-mug cake for me :). Probably gonna try a smaller cup or ramekins for guests.
My question is can the batter be mixed up ahead of time and just popped in the microwave once we are ready for dessert, or will the baking powder react with the wet ingredients and cause the cakes to not rise when cooked if the batter sits too long?
Delicious! I've made this every evening the past week and it's now one of the highlights of my day. Some variations I've tried include adding in ground coffee, cinnamon or topping with berry chia jam. I love that it can be made in 5 minutes!

First ever mug cake recipe i found the motivation to make since it looked the best, and I loved the ingredients to boot - and oh man, was this so good!!!! I will say with all the other recipes out there mug cake, why should we overly complicate it? Not having eggs and milk on hand, and having to melt butter, not only defeats the purpose of something quick and easy, but definitely (after tasting this), is totally unnecessary if I do say so myself!! I love this, will definitely keep on hand!💕 Side note for my experience; i switched the milk to Almond, did a combo of olive oil and canola, and broke up mini Ghirardelli chocolate bars into chunks and viola! Absolutely delicious!✨✨ Thank you for the recipe, and I love the site and will explore the rest of your awesome recipes!! 💛

This was the first mug cake I've ever made and it was perfect. I used Oat Milk. I actually didn't have cocoa powder, but I've had a huge tub of Starbucks hot cocoa mix, that is likely 1/2 cocoa and 1/2 sugar. So I followed the recipe and subbed the 2tbsp cocoa + 2tbsp sugar for 4tbsp Starbucks hot cocoa mix and it was perfect, the texture was surprisingly good and it came together so fast! I didn't add chocolate squares to make it double chocolate, I was content with just single chocolate I suppose. Great recipe Sadia!

Love this recipe perfect for the afternoon sweet fix. I am gluten free| dairy free| Processed sugar free so I made a few adjustments +Used Bob’s Redmill 1-1 GF replacement flour same measurements + cacao + 3 TBSP Maple syrup instead of sugar. It worked great and had the cake texture of a chocolate lava cake. Love these mug cakes way to go making these, also perfect after school snacks for the healthier ones. You guys rock! -Coconut sugar instead of granulated,
-Almond milk instead of soy,
-Nearly 3 tbsp of oat flour instead of all-purpose and
-2 tbsp of dark chocolate chips.
Delicious! It feels a bit magical that you can get such a nice, fluffy cake with just a couple minutes in the microwave! I threw a few halved cherries into the mix, which was a great addition.
Such a perfect recipe for a single dessert for a late night sweet tooth. We don’t keep a lot of sweets at the house but this is a perfect single serving to enjoy a sweet treat!

This really also does work great for a spontanious movie night with friends. I've already made this double chocolate mug cake so many times. Just a quick desert or when you want some cake, but you're the only one eating. Most of the mug cakes I've tried previously have been gooey so I was just convinced microwaves can't make a good mug cake! But I tried this one last night when I was still peckish after dinner and it was INCREDIBLE - the texture is exactly like an oven-baked cake. It cooked perfectly even in my terrible microwave :) 2 tablespoons of sugar sounds like a lot but the resulting cake wasn't sweet at all, it resembled dark chocolate. Sadia's mug cakes are my go-to babysitting activity when it's night time and they want a snack before bed!

Love this recipe! I have been trying mug cakes recipes for a few weeks now and this one is hands down my favorite. I used gluten-free powder, cacao powder, hemp milk, and used half raw cane sugar and half swerve sweetener. I also added walnuts and the mug cake was DELICIOUS. Warm, chocolatey, a little gooey and a slight crunch with the walnuts. Topped it off with some soy vanilla ice cream and *chef's kiss* perfect. lol

What a great recipe! 5 minutes total, no dishes, delicious. I don't have much of a sweet tooth and haven't had cake in 10 years or more. I've made this 10 times since you posted it.
It's *perfect* as written. But I couldn't help but play with it. 90 seconds was ideal in my microwave (unsure of the wattage). Gluten-free flour worked great for my gluten-free sister. I tried swapping apple sauce for the oil and it kind of worked. I've added cherries (dried and fresh), espresso powder, black and English walnuts, and vegan marshmallows (oops, they exploded). I'll try crushed candy canes when they're in season.

Wow this was so easy and delicious!! I used coconut milk, which gave it a super strong coconut flavor - would probably try oat milk or something else next time. This is so perfect for when you have a random dessert craving but don't have anything at home to satisfy it :)
I want to try making this with my kids. Any suggestion on healthier alternate flour options? Could these be made with oat flour and still turn out yum?

My 7 year old made this and it was super easy. We found that the cocoa was too over powering. Maybe the taste is suitable for adults. Will reduce cocoa next time. Thanks for sharing.

Mug cakes have only ever brought me heartbreak and disappointment. However, yesterday when my partner was craving cake but we were both feeling too lazy and comfy to go to the store, I remebered this video. THEY WERE SO GOOD!!! He tried the banana, replacing the flaxseed with almond butter and it was so moist and yummy. I tried the chocolate one and loved that I got to customize it for my medical needs by taking out salt and reducing sugar. I topped it with fresh berries and a drizzle of almond butter and our night got 1000% cozier! Thank you so much!
I tried many pick-up limes recipes and enjoyed them all, but sadly didn't have luck with this one! Tried to bake it twice, using different mugs and decreasing temperature from 800w to 650w, but each time a piece of chocolate placed inside turned into a piece of charcoal, while the texture of the rest was perfectly fluffy... Any suggestions how to avoid it?

I watched the video and knew I had to try this recipe ASAP. I didn't have any bar chocolate, so I just left it out. I accidentally added a 1/2 tsp of vanilla, but it's fine because I love vanilla. I used almond milk because it's what I have. I also want to try subbing some of the milk for brewed coffee, because I hear that is a good flavor combination: coffee and chocolate. And my microwave is 1000 watts, so I only had to microwave it for about 1 minute and 15 seconds. It was SO fluffy and delicious! Probably one of the best mug cake recipes I have ever tried. Thank you so much! I will be trying the Peanut Butter and Jelly Mug Cake later!
Love it! I used oat milk and it turned out excellent. Actually got nervous it “wasn’t enough “ but ended up very full and left a couple bites in the mug.

This was so delicious!! The mug cake was easy to make, and it came out perfectly light and fluffy.
I actually watched the new video as I was eating lunch (potato and green pea curry via PUL, of course) and decided I could do with something sweet. Didn't have a microwave, didn't have sprinkles, didn't have an oven-safe mug, so I used my oven, threw in some dark chocolate chunks, and used a bowl and it turned out great - just the right quantity and also the right amount of sweet, warm vanilla-ey (?) goodness!
What do you do if you don't have a microwave? These look so delish! Thank you!
