Chocolate cake is one of the most popular, if not the most popular cake flavours that we know of. With this recipe, you can quickly make a delicious single-serving chocolate cake (in a mug), with minimal effort.
In a large microwave-safe mug, mix together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
Then add the milk, oil, and vanilla. Mix until just combined. Be careful not to over-mix.
Using your fingers, press half of the chocolate into the middle of the cake batter in your mug. This is so you have some melted chocolate in the centre of your cake (yum!). Add the other half of the chocolate to the top of the batter.
Microwave on high (800 - 900 W) for 2 minutes*, or until a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out clean. If the cake isn't cooked through yet, place it back in the microwave at intervals of 15 seconds.
Let the mug cake cool slightly, add your desired toppings, and enjoy!

* If preferred, bake it in an oven-safe dish at 350ยฐF (180ยฐC) for 15 - 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out clean.
Storage
Best if enjoyed immediately.
Transfer to an airtight container and store in the fridge for up to 1 day.

I have yet to find a PUL recipe that just doesn't work! This mug cake is so decadent and filling, perfect for an afternoon snack with some tea :) I ended up adding a bit of orange zest instead of the vanilla extract and it came out just perfect!

Really good and easy to make. Used water instead of milk because I ran out and reduced the sugar by a bit. Was delicious and satisfied my chocolate cake craving :)
Delicious! Used an orange flavoured chocolate in the middle for a change and worked great. I tend to scale the quantity down and find it doesn't need as much time to cook that way so only do a minute to keep it nice and moist

Love it! tweaked the recipe to 1 1/2 tbsp oil and added 3tbsp flour and only 1 tbsp cocoa powder to dull that flavour and make it more moist. Also subbed choc chips for raspberries and added vegan nutella on top. Iโve also tried it with biscoff spread which seems to work best added after cooking.

Hey Shilpi, yes you can increase the serving size to two if your mug is larger. The exact cook time may depend on your microwave. We'd suggest microwaving for 2 and a half minutes to start based on other reviewers. If the cake isn't cooked through yet, simply place it back in the microwave at intervals of 15 seconds until done ๐
Best mug cake recipe ever - it never fails! I love adding a little peanut butter or lotus biscoff spread the centre of the batter if I donโt have any chocolate in. So good!

This is so delicious! I need to be more patient next time as mine wasnโt fully cooked in the first 2 mins so I turned up the heat and cooked it for another minute and ended up burning it a bit. Still so tasty though! I added a dash of cinnamon and instant coffee granules and it was amazing.

Made all of the PUL mug cakes various times- they are UNFAILABLE*! Even replacing the wheat flour for rice or corn flour or mixing up the taste-giving-ingredient (chocolate, berries, banana) for whatever else is at hand - it still works perfectly and tastes glorious. *(correct word infallible)
Delicious - both in texture and in flavor! And I'm picky, trust me ;) haha The only thing I'd like to note is that it's portioned out for a small-medium mug, not a big one. I'll definitely make it again soon!

As good as u can buy in a supermarket. U can be creative with the ingredients I added blueberries and matcha powder. And I used 'hagelslag' I stead of blocks chocolate. Also I put a little kefir and regular milk instead of plant based milk. Super yummy ๐

Really loved this recipe, almost a go-to dessert in winter - don't skip the two pieces of chocolate in the middle and on the top, they really make a lot difference! Also I tried soy milk, almond milk and oat milk, I think the almond milk works the best for me.

In case you're interested, aiming to limit over-mixing and overcooking can help avoid the dry and dense texture: -For over-mixing - When adding the milk, oil, and vanilla extract aim to mix until just combined rather than stirring extra. It can be tempting to get rid of all the clumps but overdoing it can lead to a rubbery texture! -For overcooking - we'd also suggest cooking the cake in shorter intervals until done so you can keep a closer eye on it.

Do you need to use Dutch processed cocoa powder specifically or can you use any kind of cocoa powder? Can you use regular extra virgin olive for the vegetable oil? I want to try to use items that I already have in the pantry as opposed to buying more specific stuff I might not use again..

Hey Joscelyn! We prefer Dutch processed cocoa powder since it's sweeter in flavour and dissolves easily in liquid compared to natural cocoa powder which is more bitter. You could use the cocoa powder you already have on hand though. Extra virgin olive oil isn't the most stable oil in heat and tends to have a strong flavour so we'd recommend an alternative oil if possible for the best results. No problem, Joscelyn! In our grocery store it's labelled as "vegetable oil" although any mild flavour oil will do. Others could be refined olive oil, sunflower oil, or melted refined coconut oil.
This is a really quick, easy and delicious cake. I made it with coconut oil, unsweetened coconut beverage, 1 tbsp of coconut sugar and 1 tbsp of cane sugar. It was perfect and moist! Thank you for sharing this, I will be making it again and again!

Hi Alexa! You could use a neutral vegetable oil, such as refined olive oil that doesn't impart the olive oil taste. Refined coconut oil is coconut oil that doesn't smell or taste like coconuts so that's another alternative if accessible ๐
Hi PUL team, I tried the recipe out as I'm thinking of serving this at a dinner party with friends and it turned out very tasty, but my mug was big, so it was a half-a-mug cake for me :). Probably gonna try a smaller cup or ramekins for guests. My question is can the batter be mixed up ahead of time and just popped in the microwave once we are ready for dessert, or will the baking powder react with the wet ingredients and cause the cakes to not rise when cooked if the batter sits too long?

We'd still recommend microwaving shortly after preparing the batter if possible for best results. Let us know how it goes if you experiment with it!

This is a super popular and successful recipe, no wonder it had 5 stars from 77 reviews. It turned out great with me! Before I saw this recipe, I followed the exact same recipe except that it said 3 tbsp of all-purpose flour and not 2. This one proved to be much much better and more successful. Thank you so much! Also, I have a question: can I also use self-raising flour at times instead of all-purpose? Will the outcome be better? Take your time in giving me your answer, I am always available. We're so glad it was enjoyed, Rahma! Thanks for the question. Self-rising flour is all-purpose flour, but with baking powder, and sometimes salt added to it. When too much baking powder is used, you might find recipes rise too much and then collapse.
Due to this, for recipes that include baking powder and salt, such as baked goods, we'd recommend that for every cup of all-purpose flour substituted with self-rising flour, to reduce the amount of baking powder by 1 and 1/2 tsp, and reduce the amount of salt by around 1/4 tsp. In recipes with less than a cup, such as this one, you could experiment without adjusting the baking powder and salt if desired. We hope this helps for now!
First ever mug cake recipe i found the motivation to make since it looked the best, and I loved the ingredients to boot - and oh man, was this so good!!!! I will say with all the other recipes out there mug cake, why should we overly complicate it? Not having eggs and milk on hand, and having to melt butter, not only defeats the purpose of something quick and easy, but definitely (after tasting this), is totally unnecessary if I do say so myself!! I love this, will definitely keep on hand!๐ Side note for my experience; i switched the milk to Almond, did a combo of olive oil and canola, and broke up mini Ghirardelli chocolate bars into chunks and viola! This was the first mug cake I've ever made and it was perfect. I used Oat Milk. I actually didn't have cocoa powder, but I've had a huge tub of Starbucks hot cocoa mix, that is likely 1/2 cocoa and 1/2 sugar. So I followed the recipe and subbed the 2tbsp cocoa + 2tbsp sugar for 4tbsp Starbucks hot cocoa mix and it was perfect, the texture was surprisingly good and it came together so fast! I didn't add chocolate squares to make it double chocolate, I was content with just single chocolate I suppose. Great recipe Sadia!

Love this recipe perfect for the afternoon sweet fix. I am gluten free| dairy free| Processed sugar free so I made a few adjustments +Used Bobโs Redmill 1-1 GF replacement flour same measurements + cacao + 3 TBSP Maple syrup instead of sugar. It worked great and had the cake texture of a chocolate lava cake. Love these mug cakes way to go making these, also perfect after school snacks for the healthier ones. You guys rock! Hey Farah! Thanks for the question and kind words ๐ You can double the recipe, although the exact cook time may depend on your microwave. We'd suggest microwaving for 2 and a half minutes to start based on other reviewers. If the cake isn't cooked through yet, simply place it back in the microwave at intervals of 15 seconds until done. Alternatively, you could make two cakes in two mugs separately for ~2 minutes each if desired ๐
Truly the best mug I have ever made. Alternatives I used: -Coconut sugar instead of granulated, -Almond milk instead of soy, -Nearly 3 tbsp of oat flour instead of all-purpose and -2 tbsp of dark chocolate chips.

Such a perfect recipe for a single dessert for a late night sweet tooth. We donโt keep a lot of sweets at the house but this is a perfect single serving to enjoy a sweet treat!

One of the best mug cakes recipes ever. This is my go-to for a quick sweet snack. Usually I substitute about 6 grams of the flour with vegan hazelnut protein powder and it's amazing.

I've already made this double chocolate mug cake so many times. Just a quick desert or when you want some cake, but you're the only one eating. I've previously made microwave mug cakes with egg, and they weren't nice, but couldn't find an eggless recipe I trusted. But the you cane along and there was so much deliciousness. I've tried the double choc and the blueberry mug cakes and they were both quick and simple to prepare and yummy to eat. When you want something sweet but not necessarily a whole cake hanging around to tempt you afterwards, these are just perfect. I will be making them again.

Most of the mug cakes I've tried previously have been gooey so I was just convinced microwaves can't make a good mug cake! But I tried this one last night when I was still peckish after dinner and it was INCREDIBLE - the texture is exactly like an oven-baked cake. It cooked perfectly even in my terrible microwave :) 2 tablespoons of sugar sounds like a lot but the resulting cake wasn't sweet at all, it resembled dark chocolate. Sadia's mug cakes are my go-to babysitting activity when it's night time and they want a snack before bed!

This was amazing! Very light yet chocolatey enough. I did chocolate chips instead of the nugget in the middle like you did. I've made a few mug cakes before and they've always been a bit gummy, perhaps from the egg. Even my fiance was impressed!

Love this recipe! I have been trying mug cakes recipes for a few weeks now and this one is hands down my favorite. I used gluten-free powder, cacao powder, hemp milk, and used half raw cane sugar and half swerve sweetener. I also added walnuts and the mug cake was DELICIOUS. Warm, chocolatey, a little gooey and a slight crunch with the walnuts. Topped it off with some soy vanilla ice cream and *chef's kiss* perfect. lol

I would love to make these recipes they look delicious I don't have a microwave. we believes that they're unhealthy for you. What a great recipe! 5 minutes total, no dishes, delicious. I don't have much of a sweet tooth and haven't had cake in 10 years or more. I've made this 10 times since you posted it.
It's *perfect* as written. But I couldn't help but play with it. 90 seconds was ideal in my microwave (unsure of the wattage). Gluten-free flour worked great for my gluten-free sister. I tried swapping apple sauce for the oil and it kind of worked. I've added cherries (dried and fresh), espresso powder, black and English walnuts, and vegan marshmallows (oops, they exploded). I'll try crushed candy canes when they're in season.

Hi Charlotte, that's a wonderful question! We used raw sugar in the video. White granulated sugar in the Netherlands is vegan, but some white granulated sugar in North America is not, so to avoid confusion we use raw sugar for our recipes generally ๐ค

Wow this was so easy and delicious!! I used coconut milk, which gave it a super strong coconut flavor - would probably try oat milk or something else next time. This is so perfect for when you have a random dessert craving but don't have anything at home to satisfy it :)

Hey there Zini, we haven't personally tested this one out with oat flour so we can't say for certain. We'd recommend trying half oat and half all-purpose flour to start, and see if you like the flavour and texture ๐ Since oat flour is usually gluten-free, the cake may be a tad more crumbly ๐ฐ
Some members of our PUL family have had some luck with oat flour in our banana bread mug cake recipe if you're looking for another option too!

My 7 year old made this and it was super easy. We found that the cocoa was too over powering. Maybe the taste is suitable for adults. Will reduce cocoa next time. Thanks for sharing.

Mug cakes have only ever brought me heartbreak and disappointment. However, yesterday when my partner was craving cake but we were both feeling too lazy and comfy to go to the store, I remebered this video. THEY WERE SO GOOD!!! He tried the banana, replacing the flaxseed with almond butter and it was so moist and yummy. I tried the chocolate one and loved that I got to customize it for my medical needs by taking out salt and reducing sugar. I topped it with fresh berries and a drizzle of almond butter and our night got 1000% cozier! Thank you so much!

I tried many pick-up limes recipes and enjoyed them all, but sadly didn't have luck with this one! Tried to bake it twice, using different mugs and decreasing temperature from 800w to 650w, but each time a piece of chocolate placed inside turned into a piece of charcoal, while the texture of the rest was perfectly fluffy... Any suggestions how to avoid it?

Hi Roxy, that's unfortunate to hear! It may be that your microwave is quite powerful or disperses air differently throughout. Microwaving for shorter increments of time at the lower temperature should help prevent the chocolate bits from burning! This way you can check in on it more often before it gets to the point of burning. You could also try stirring the mixture to help disperse the chocolate bits before they burn. Microwaves are a bit tricky since each one is different but do let us know if that helps! ๐
I watched the video and knew I had to try this recipe ASAP. I didn't have any bar chocolate, so I just left it out. I accidentally added a 1/2 tsp of vanilla, but it's fine because I love vanilla. I used almond milk because it's what I have. I also want to try subbing some of the milk for brewed coffee, because I hear that is a good flavor combination: coffee and chocolate. And my microwave is 1000 watts, so I only had to microwave it for about 1 minute and 15 seconds. It was SO fluffy and delicious! Probably one of the best mug cake recipes I have ever tried. Thank you so much! I will be trying the Peanut Butter and Jelly Mug Cake later!

I actually watched the new video as I was eating lunch (potato and green pea curry via PUL, of course) and decided I could do with something sweet. Didn't have a microwave, didn't have sprinkles, didn't have an oven-safe mug, so I used my oven, threw in some dark chocolate chunks, and used a bowl and it turned out great - just the right quantity and also the right amount of sweet, warm vanilla-ey (?) goodness!

I have yet to find a PUL recipe that just doesn't work! This mug cake is so decadent and filling, perfect for an afternoon snack with some tea :) I ended up adding a bit of orange zest instead of the vanilla extract and it came out just perfect!
Made today and used apple sauce in place of the oil just to see if it would still work and be good. Success! Delicious!!

Delicious! Used an orange flavoured chocolate in the middle for a change and worked great. I tend to scale the quantity down and find it doesn't need as much time to cook that way so only do a minute to keep it nice and moist

tweaked the recipe to 1 1/2 tbsp oil and added 3tbsp flour and only 1 tbsp cocoa powder to dull that flavour and make it more moist. Also subbed choc chips for raspberries and added vegan nutella on top. Iโve also tried it with biscoff spread which seems to work best added after cooking.

Second time making this! Such a quick and easy recipe when Iโm craving cake! I reduce the cooking time by 15 seconds when Iโm not adding chocolate and it is perfect! Moist, chocolatey and perfect amount for one.

This is so delicious! I need to be more patient next time as mine wasnโt fully cooked in the first 2 mins so I turned up the heat and cooked it for another minute and ended up burning it a bit. Still so tasty though! I added a dash of cinnamon and instant coffee granules and it was amazing.

TBH this is the only chocolate mug cake that meets my standards. the texture actually comes out soft & fluffy, unlike so many other mug cakes that i've tried! i also love the chocolate centre hehe. hands down, one of my favourite midnight snacks!

Even replacing the wheat flour for rice or corn flour or mixing up the taste-giving-ingredient (chocolate, berries, banana) for whatever else is at hand - it still works perfectly and tastes glorious.

I was actually surprised that the instructions were so clear. I love the mug cake but it also took me quite a long time to buy the soy milk, baking powder and Dutch processed cocoa.

U can be creative with the ingredients
I added blueberries and matcha powder. And I used 'hagelslag' I stead of blocks chocolate. Also I put a little kefir and regular milk instead of plant based milk.

Really loved this recipe, almost a go-to dessert in winter - don't skip the two pieces of chocolate in the middle and on the top, they really make a lot difference! Also I tried soy milk, almond milk and oat milk, I think the almond milk works the best for me.

Do you need to use Dutch processed cocoa powder specifically or can you use any kind of cocoa powder? Can you use regular extra virgin olive for the vegetable oil? I want to try to use items that I already have in the pantry as opposed to buying more specific stuff I might not use again..

Hi PUL team, I tried the recipe out as I'm thinking of serving this at a dinner party with friends and it turned out very tasty, but my mug was big, so it was a half-a-mug cake for me :). Probably gonna try a smaller cup or ramekins for guests.
My question is can the batter be mixed up ahead of time and just popped in the microwave once we are ready for dessert, or will the baking powder react with the wet ingredients and cause the cakes to not rise when cooked if the batter sits too long?
Delicious! I've made this every evening the past week and it's now one of the highlights of my day. Some variations I've tried include adding in ground coffee, cinnamon or topping with berry chia jam. I love that it can be made in 5 minutes!

First ever mug cake recipe i found the motivation to make since it looked the best, and I loved the ingredients to boot - and oh man, was this so good!!!! I will say with all the other recipes out there mug cake, why should we overly complicate it? Not having eggs and milk on hand, and having to melt butter, not only defeats the purpose of something quick and easy, but definitely (after tasting this), is totally unnecessary if I do say so myself!! I love this, will definitely keep on hand!๐ Side note for my experience; i switched the milk to Almond, did a combo of olive oil and canola, and broke up mini Ghirardelli chocolate bars into chunks and viola! Absolutely delicious!โจโจ Thank you for the recipe, and I love the site and will explore the rest of your awesome recipes!! ๐

This was the first mug cake I've ever made and it was perfect. I used Oat Milk. I actually didn't have cocoa powder, but I've had a huge tub of Starbucks hot cocoa mix, that is likely 1/2 cocoa and 1/2 sugar. So I followed the recipe and subbed the 2tbsp cocoa + 2tbsp sugar for 4tbsp Starbucks hot cocoa mix and it was perfect, the texture was surprisingly good and it came together so fast! I didn't add chocolate squares to make it double chocolate, I was content with just single chocolate I suppose. Great recipe Sadia!

Love this recipe perfect for the afternoon sweet fix. I am gluten free| dairy free| Processed sugar free so I made a few adjustments +Used Bobโs Redmill 1-1 GF replacement flour same measurements + cacao + 3 TBSP Maple syrup instead of sugar. It worked great and had the cake texture of a chocolate lava cake. Love these mug cakes way to go making these, also perfect after school snacks for the healthier ones. You guys rock! This really also does work great for a spontanious movie night with friends. Most of the mug cakes I've tried previously have been gooey so I was just convinced microwaves can't make a good mug cake! But I tried this one last night when I was still peckish after dinner and it was INCREDIBLE - the texture is exactly like an oven-baked cake. It cooked perfectly even in my terrible microwave :) 2 tablespoons of sugar sounds like a lot but the resulting cake wasn't sweet at all, it resembled dark chocolate. Sadia's mug cakes are my go-to babysitting activity when it's night time and they want a snack before bed!

This was amazing! Very light yet chocolatey enough. I did chocolate chips instead of the nugget in the middle like you did. I've made a few mug cakes before and they've always been a bit gummy, perhaps from the egg. Even my fiance was impressed!
Soooo good & so easy! I add a few pieces of chopped crystallised ginger to make it super grown-up. Still canโt decide between this or the PB & J as my favourite - both are winners!

Love this recipe! I have been trying mug cakes recipes for a few weeks now and this one is hands down my favorite. I used gluten-free powder, cacao powder, hemp milk, and used half raw cane sugar and half swerve sweetener. I also added walnuts and the mug cake was DELICIOUS. Warm, chocolatey, a little gooey and a slight crunch with the walnuts. Topped it off with some soy vanilla ice cream and *chef's kiss* perfect. lol
I would love to make these recipes they look delicious I don't have a microwave. we believes that they're unhealthy for you. Can I use an oven in a different pan with the same directions or similar I'm not that good of a baker. so following your recipes have been awesome to me because they're so easy to follow and do myself!
I've made mug cakes before but they NEVER tasted like this! I can't believe how delicious this was. I had the Vegan Protein Lettuce Wraps for dinner and needed something chocolate after and HELLO! This was so simple and delicious, I can't wait to try the other mug cake recipes!

What an incredible recipe. I've made it a few times now since you've posted it, five or so, and made it for my partner as well and we both love it. We keep buying vanilla soy milk, so that's what we used. It's sooo gooood!

What a great recipe! 5 minutes total, no dishes, delicious. I don't have much of a sweet tooth and haven't had cake in 10 years or more. I've made this 10 times since you posted it.
It's *perfect* as written. But I couldn't help but play with it. 90 seconds was ideal in my microwave (unsure of the wattage). Gluten-free flour worked great for my gluten-free sister. I tried swapping apple sauce for the oil and it kind of worked. I've added cherries (dried and fresh), espresso powder, black and English walnuts, and vegan marshmallows (oops, they exploded). I'll try crushed candy canes when they're in season.

Wow this was so easy and delicious!! I used coconut milk, which gave it a super strong coconut flavor - would probably try oat milk or something else next time. This is so perfect for when you have a random dessert craving but don't have anything at home to satisfy it :)
I want to try making this with my kids. Any suggestion on healthier alternate flour options? Could these be made with oat flour and still turn out yum?

My 7 year old made this and it was super easy. We found that the cocoa was too over powering. Maybe the taste is suitable for adults. Will reduce cocoa next time. Thanks for sharing.

Mug cakes have only ever brought me heartbreak and disappointment. However, yesterday when my partner was craving cake but we were both feeling too lazy and comfy to go to the store, I remebered this video. THEY WERE SO GOOD!!! He tried the banana, replacing the flaxseed with almond butter and it was so moist and yummy. I tried the chocolate one and loved that I got to customize it for my medical needs by taking out salt and reducing sugar. I topped it with fresh berries and a drizzle of almond butter and our night got 1000% cozier! Thank you so much!
I tried many pick-up limes recipes and enjoyed them all, but sadly didn't have luck with this one! Tried to bake it twice, using different mugs and decreasing temperature from 800w to 650w, but each time a piece of chocolate placed inside turned into a piece of charcoal, while the texture of the rest was perfectly fluffy... Any suggestions how to avoid it?

I watched the video and knew I had to try this recipe ASAP. I didn't have any bar chocolate, so I just left it out. I accidentally added a 1/2 tsp of vanilla, but it's fine because I love vanilla. I used almond milk because it's what I have. I also want to try subbing some of the milk for brewed coffee, because I hear that is a good flavor combination: coffee and chocolate. And my microwave is 1000 watts, so I only had to microwave it for about 1 minute and 15 seconds. It was SO fluffy and delicious! Probably one of the best mug cake recipes I have ever tried. Thank you so much! I will be trying the Peanut Butter and Jelly Mug Cake later!
Love it! I used oat milk and it turned out excellent. Actually got nervous it โwasnโt enough โ but ended up very full and left a couple bites in the mug.

I actually watched the new video as I was eating lunch (potato and green pea curry via PUL, of course) and decided I could do with something sweet. Didn't have a microwave, didn't have sprinkles, didn't have an oven-safe mug, so I used my oven, threw in some dark chocolate chunks, and used a bowl and it turned out great - just the right quantity and also the right amount of sweet, warm vanilla-ey (?) goodness!
What do you do if you don't have a microwave? These look so delish! Thank you!
