Steam buns, often called bao, are pillowy-soft dumplings. Ours are filled with a juicy bulgogi-inspired vegan meatball. The tender bread and the mouth-watering filling are the most amazing combination. These freeze beautifully and are perfect to take as an on-the-go snack.

Dear PUL team! We want to make this for Christmas. Do you think I can also use the beyond meat burgers and smash them? because I couldn't find the mince. Is it also possible to make them a day before and reheat them before serving?

Hello there, Charissa! What a lovely idea for Christmas. Yes, you can use Beyond Meat burgers if you can’t find the mince. We’d recommend gently crumbling them with your fingers, rather than fully smashing or mashing them though. You’re aiming for small, mince-like pieces with a bit of texture. This helps the filling stay juicy and prevents it from becoming mushy 😊
You can also make these ahead of time. Once the buns are fully steamed, let them cool completely, then store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Before serving, you can reheat them by steaming again for a few minutes until warmed through. Hope they’re a hit at your Christmas table ✨

These will definitely be repeated! They were yummy 😋 . My family gobbled them up.
They are really good. But they are not a quick make. I used my mixer for the dough so that helped save time. My only critic is it needs a bit of salt. So I’d add salt🧂to the mince next time. And reduce the sugar a bit in the dough mix.

These were truly amazing. I missed filled baos so much, so these hit the spot!!

Could I use lentils instead of beyond meat mince?Any spices to add if I do that? Processed mock meats don't agree with me.

Hey Janelle, that's a fun idea! We imagine you could, although for extra flavour, perhaps sauté them with garlic, ginger, soy sauce, or in a pinch of gochugaru before mixing with the green onions and bulgogi sauce. Mash the lentils well, or blend with a food processor to help achieve a texture that can be formed into balls. Maybe also add some sesame oil. Let us know how it goes if you test it out 🤗

Would love to try these, but I don’t have a steamer basket. Is there something i can use instead?

Hey Hanni! You can bake these as well. Bake them at 350°F (180°C) for about 25 minutes, or until golden. They won't have the same fluffy, squishy texture, but they will still be delicious ☺️
