Ingredients

Tofu

Sweet & sour sauce

Stir-fry

  • 1½ cups (300 g)
    uncooked white rice
  • 2 tsp (10 mL)
    vegetable oil
  • 1
    medium red onion, chopped
  • 1
    carrot, finely chopped
  • 1
    red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • ½ cup (126 g)
    canned pineapple chunks

Optional garnish

  • sliced green onion

Directions

  1. To a large shallow bowl, add the tofu cubes and soy sauce. Stir to coat.
  2. Then add the cornstarch, salt, and pepper. Gently stir until all the pieces are well coated.
  3. Add the oil to a large pan on medium-high heat. When hot, add the tofu and cook for 7 - 10 minutes, or until golden on all sides. Don't disturb the tofu too much while it's cooking to avoid crumbling.
  4. Meanwhile, make the sauce by whisking together all the ingredients in a small bowl.
  5. Cook the rice according to the package instructions.
  6. When the tofu is golden, transfer it to a bowl and set it aside. Returning the same large pan to the heat, add the oil, onion, and carrot. Cook for 4 - 5 minutes.
  7. Then add the bell peppers and pineapple chunks, and cook for another minute.
  8. Add the sweet and sour sauce to the veggies in the pan, along with the tofu. Let it simmer for 3 minutes, or until the sauce thickens a bit.
  9. Remove from the heat, serve alongside the rice, garnish, and enjoy!

Kaylyn Ruth Kutilek - March 6, 2024, 2:55 a.m.

I’m still new with cooking tofu but despite that, this recipe turned out great! My Vietnamese fiancé and one year old approved!

Marta González Fernández - Feb. 27, 2024, 1:05 p.m.

lorist - Jan. 16, 2024, 1:38 a.m.

Very easy and good. Needed to add some chili to spice it up for me ( as always) ‼️recipe to keep!

The Lazy Artist - Jan. 13, 2024, 2:48 p.m.

Made ⁸this recipe for lunch and it was amazing!! I've never been able to cook tofu properly, but the combination of the sweet and sour in the sauce made this so good! Definitely will cook again!

Rita Cunha - Jan. 4, 2024, 6:44 p.m.

This is one of my favorite recipes. It’s easy to make and packed with flavor. This time I swapped the pineapple with zucchini pineapple I canned this summer. Surprisingly really good!

PUL Team - Jan. 4, 2024, 10:53 p.m.

Woohoo! We're so happy to hear that the Sweet & Sour Tofu Stir-Fry is being enjoyed, Rita, thanks for sharing your experience with it 😃

Amanda - Dec. 16, 2023, 8:41 p.m.

We loved this so much. Felt like we were at a vegan Asian restaurant. Really budget friendly recipe! Excellent, thank you.

PUL Team - Dec. 18, 2023, 4:20 a.m.

Always a big compliment when recipes meet restaurant standards! Thanks, Amanda ☺️

Dora - Dec. 10, 2023, 5:06 p.m.

For my taste this had way too much soy sauce, but other than that it was perfect! I'll make it again and half the soy sauce. :)

Deborah - Dec. 1, 2023, 9:19 a.m.

Easy and delicious!

Danielle - Nov. 30, 2023, 1:17 a.m.

This recipe was so good we had to have seconds for dinner. The flavors were all on point. Absolutely scrumptious!

Julia - Sept. 21, 2023, 5:08 p.m.

Love it! We cook it very often and its better than in any restaurant!

Pema - Sept. 15, 2023, 1:03 p.m.

This has become a classic, it's so simple yet delicious! I definitely recommend serving the crispy tofu separately if you love texture. I have gotten my (non-vegetarian) housemates to love tofu this way!

PUL Team - Sept. 15, 2023, 6:17 p.m.

Awe we're so happy your roommate enjoyed the tofu, Pema! Thank you 😊

Christopher White - Sept. 14, 2023, 1:20 a.m.

One of my all-time favourites! I add more ginger and make the veggies a bit larger so it feels like takeaway at home. :)

Pooja - Sept. 6, 2023, 12:37 a.m.

I make this without pineapple and add stir fry sauce instead of tomato paste. It’s a dinner staple in our household. Love how you always make sure to add at least two veggies in each dish 🤩Thank you, as always! 💛

PUL Team - Sept. 7, 2023, 8:51 p.m.

Stir fry sauce is a lovely idea, Pooja, thank you! We hope you continue to enjoy the PUL recipes :)

Jenny P - Sept. 3, 2023, 2:01 a.m.

Incredible! This is the kind of recipe I make and love and crave it like take out. Better then takeout actually. Amazing!!

Jp - Sept. 2, 2023, 10:12 p.m.

Hi! Is there any thing I can substitute for pineapple juice and chunks?.

PUL Team - Sept. 4, 2023, 4:24 p.m.

Hey Jp! Feel free to omit the pineapple chunks and use another sweeter juice, such as orange juice instead of the pineapple juice! If sweet chunks are desired, we've heard positive reviews with canned peaches, although perhaps mango, kiwi, or papaya are other ideas to replace the pineapple chunks. Do let us know how it goes if you give the sweet & sour tofu stir-fry a try 🤗

Cynthia - Aug. 24, 2023, 6:05 p.m.

This was phenomenal!! The sauce was better than actual take-out sweet and sour I've had. Even my carnivore partner loved it and asked me to make it again!!! If you're looking for a great introductory vegan recipe for yourself or to sway others into eating more plant-based, this is 100% my top choice. Definitely going into my regular meal rotation. I might try adding broccoli like someone mentioned below. Thanks so much for sharing this recipe PUL team!!

PUL Team - Aug. 26, 2023, 3:26 a.m.

Oh this is so lovely to hear, Cynthia, thank YOU! Hope you enjoy it with broccoli if you give that a try 😃

jennyP - Aug. 24, 2023, 7:46 a.m.

This was delicious!! Will definitely have it in my regular rotation!

Pigmango - Aug. 22, 2023, 9:03 a.m.

This was absolutely perfect. Thank you!

Jessica Davison - Aug. 14, 2023, 2:27 p.m.

This was delicious!

Nova - Aug. 8, 2023, 11:37 p.m.

This was absolutely delicious!! 😍 Made it for my job lunch boxes. Added some spinach and topped it with crushed cashews as well! So good! ❤️

Asma - July 26, 2023, 1 p.m.

This so delicious! I made so many times :)

Adrienne - July 17, 2023, 6:20 a.m.

Delicious! Tangy, not too sweet and packed with veggies. I added broccoli to give it something green, and next time will add celery or seeded cucumbers, like they do in Thailand for the extra crunch. I made it for my friends and their kids, and even the 3 and 7 year olds liked it! One of them is pretty picky, so if you have kids I’d say give it a try!

PUL Team - July 18, 2023, 2:34 a.m.

Such a big compliment, Adrienne, thank you very much! Hugs to you and your little ones 🤗

Viktorija - July 16, 2023, 10:19 p.m.

Loved it 😊

Amanda - July 16, 2023, 6:05 a.m.

SO good with just a little bit of ketchup added!

Nichole - July 12, 2023, 3:19 a.m.

Delicious!

beca - July 1, 2023, 4:38 a.m.

The best tofu recipe ever. You got to try this recipe… it’s been on repeat lately

Jon - June 15, 2023, 3:27 a.m.

love the page set up, with recipe beside ingredients. So many other sites require too much scrolling.

PUL Team - June 15, 2023, 5:42 a.m.

So happy to hear, Jon, thank you 🤗

Sian - May 27, 2023, 1:20 a.m.

We LOVE this recipe. This is totally hits the spot for a ‘take away’ substitute.l and leftovers keep so well.
I love adding broccoli and recently was out of rice vinegar so used ACV and it was perfect!
Thanks for another winner recipe :)

PUL Team - May 27, 2023, 3:54 a.m.

So happy to hear, Sian, thank you 😃

Linda - May 24, 2023, 4:19 p.m.

For medical reasons, I've had to cut down on my consumption of animal proteins. I've never particularly liked tofu, but this recipe blew me away. So good! I've placed it on a repeat list.

PUL Team - May 24, 2023, 9:30 p.m.

Such a massive compliment, Linda, it means so much!

Azul - May 21, 2023, 2:44 p.m.

I don’t like sweet and savory food so I just didn’t use the syrup and the ananas. Anyways the recipe turned out crazy good, it’s my favorite and I do it every time i have a big group of friends coming over, since it’s quite easy to scale up.
I usually cook rice with a few garlic cloves , lemon juice and a bit of rice vinegar. And I find that this way the rice combines perfectly with the tofu stir.
Thank you!!

PUL Team - May 21, 2023, 9:05 p.m.

Oh, Azul, thanks so much for taking the time to share your experience with the recipe! It means so much 🤗

Verlaine - May 2, 2023, 2:33 p.m.

David Hewitt - March 18, 2023, 7:36 p.m.

Absolutely delicious
Best tofu dish ever thank you pul

Anne - March 15, 2023, 5:06 p.m.

I’ve made this several times and it’s always delicious!

Lisa - March 9, 2023, 7:37 p.m.

Great! So yummy!

Kristy - March 9, 2023, 12:19 a.m.

YUM! Thank you Sadie and PUL this was so delicious! And your instructions were very easy to follow, as always. I substituted mushrooms for the red/green pepper (since I didn’t have one) and threw in a handful of frozen green beans for color. Whole family loved it!

PUL Team - March 9, 2023, 5:37 p.m.

So glad it was enjoyed, Kristy, thank you!

Anna - March 5, 2023, 10:02 a.m.

This has become one of my dinner staples, it is soo good!

Elena - Feb. 20, 2023, 9:44 p.m.

Every time I make this dish the amount seems like more than enough for me and my 3 housemates. But they love it so much that in the end there is no single rice grain left 😂 Absolutely delicious!

PUL Team - Feb. 21, 2023, 11:04 p.m.

Haha what a massive compliment! Thank you, Elena 😊

Ashley - Feb. 19, 2023, 4:33 p.m.

Will the PUL team be putting out a hard copy recipe book at any time ? l am a HUGE fan of the recipes, but missed the e-book release . . . \ also appreciate hard copies when cooking to write notes.

LOVE this platform and lave that tea time Tuesdays are coming back :)

PUL Team - Feb. 19, 2023, 7:12 p.m.

Aw, Ashley, you're too kind! Hopefully, in the future, we can share a physical cookbook. In the meantime, if you're interested, you can find our 3-year anniversary e-cookbook here: https://www.pickuplimesblog.c… 🙂

Megan - Feb. 18, 2023, 8:49 p.m.

Love it! Make this every couple of weeks. Delicious and nourishing.

Janne - Feb. 10, 2023, 12:12 p.m.

I love love love this recipe. I make it at least once every two weeks and there are never leftovers, even though usually it's only two people eating the serving for four, haha.
By now all my friends know this recipe and at first they are like "oh, for sure this is way to complicated for me" and then I show them and they realize it's quick and easy to make.
So this kind of is a staple in my friend group and sometimes I get messages of friends who are like "I reccomended this to a friend and she just texted me to say she loves it". Kind of feel like I'm on a tofu-stir fry mission but I love it haha.

Just a note: make sure you use rice vinegar. If using other vinegar (since rice vingear isn't the most typical one here in Germany), start gently and increase the amount while taste testing, otherwise it might end up very sour. :)

Janne - Feb. 10, 2023, 12:17 p.m.

Oh and this even was the "what to cook on a first date"-dish, so yes, it's friend group approved :)

PUL Team - Feb. 10, 2023, 9:43 p.m.

Oh, Janne, our sincerest thank you for taking the time to share your experience with the recipe - and also for sharing the recipe with others! We're so honoured it was part of a first date 🤩

Dani - Jan. 20, 2023, 4:28 a.m.

The taste & consistency of the tofu is great! And such a variety of flavors with the veggies & sauce - it's like a circus in my mouth 😄

PUL Team - Jan. 20, 2023, 7:27 a.m.

Hey Dani, it means so much - thank you 🤗

Kimmi - Jan. 12, 2023, 12:20 a.m.

Wow! I just made this for supper and it is extremely tasty. Way better than take out. Thank you for this amazing recipe. I will be making this again :)

PUL Team - Jan. 14, 2023, 4:44 a.m.

So glad it was enjoyed, Kimmi, thank you!

Julia - Dec. 20, 2022, 7:22 p.m.

This is okay. I think using less tomato paste may be needed to let the others flavors shine through. The crispy tofu is my favorite part though. Soaking the tofu then tossing the corn starch helps.

Ania - Oct. 16, 2022, 7 p.m.

Wow, with your recipe tofu can taste good! Although I wonder how to get rid of vinegar smell...
Love your content!

PUL Team - Oct. 17, 2022, 12:09 a.m.

Hey Ania, sometimes an overly strong vinegar smell is a sign too much was added or the vinegar may be sour. We'd suggest using fresh vinegar and double-checking the portion when adding it. We've also heard positive reviews with non-vinegar substitutes including lemon juice and Chinese cooking wine which is another idea. So glad the taste was still enjoyed 🙂

Ania - Oct. 17, 2022, 11 a.m.

I will try with the substitute next time, thanks :)

Mikkie - Oct. 7, 2022, 5:39 p.m.

We keep coming back to this recipe! I wasn’t a fan of sweet and sour before, but now I’m hooked!

PUL Team - Oct. 9, 2022, 10:36 p.m.

Woohoo! Happy cooking, Mikkie 🙂

John - Oct. 3, 2022, 10:42 a.m.

We devoured it! It should have made enough for leftovers tomorrow but it was so good we finished it in one go (felt too full afterwards but it was worth it!)

PUL Team - Oct. 5, 2022, 4:05 p.m.

So glad it was enjoyed, John, thank you!

Keiko - Sept. 21, 2022, 5:19 p.m.

We are not at all fans of meat substitutes but huge fans of a lot of your recipes and appetizing way of cooking and presenting. I love the flavors of the sweet and sour and think the tofu works here because of how its prepared. I have made this recipe a handful of times now and it stays on the rotation. I am rating this a 4 based on my family, but I would give it myself a 5 :)

PUL Team - Sept. 21, 2022, 11:37 p.m.

Thank you for taking the time to share, Keiko, and do let us know if you have any other feedback 😊

Zombor Berezvai - Aug. 15, 2022, 1:18 p.m.

One of the best dishes made from tofu. My favorite. :)

Bre - Aug. 12, 2022, 1:46 a.m.

I’ve been following your channel for a while and this was my first time making a recipe. I’m a big fan of tofu so I made this one. I have to be honest, it was not my favourite. The texture was good but the taste of the sauce was a bit strange and way too sour. Perhaps I did something wrong. Still love your channel, and will maybe try another recipe in the future.

PUL Team - Aug. 13, 2022, 3:31 a.m.

Hey Bre, thanks for sharing the kind words and feedback. It's so appreciated and to help us improve! We find that using fresh pineapple juice from a can or jar rather than a sweetened variety helpful in this one to avoid an overly sour taste. In the meantime if you'd like, you could add more sweetness, such as more maple syrup, to help balance out the flavors 🙂

Bre - Aug. 13, 2022, 3:35 a.m.

Thanks for your advice! I love your channel, and I did use canned juice but might try the recipe another time with more maple syrup. thanks! :)

Helen - Aug. 11, 2022, 4:22 a.m.

I made this tonight with a slightly smaller package of tofu. I also had to substitute sweet potato for the carrot. Great recipe! I'm just wondering if this would freeze well.

PUL Team - Aug. 11, 2022, 3:05 p.m.

Lovely substitutions, Helen, thanks for taking the time to share your experience with the stir fry 😃

Dora - Aug. 10, 2022, 7:50 p.m.

Made this for meal prep two weeks ago for meal prep and it was so delicious, I loved it 😋 It was even good cold ahahah (didn't have the possibility to reheat once ^^'). Thank you for this wonderful recipe the Pick Up Limes team 🙌

PUL Team - Aug. 11, 2022, 3:02 p.m.

We're so happy to hear, Dora, thank YOU!

Ellie - July 22, 2022, 6:09 p.m.

This is a delicious recipe! I love how the pineapple adds a boost of flavour to the sweet n sour sauce and the vegetables. The first time I made it, I did it exactly by the book and it turned out delicious. The second time I did not have bell peppers, so I substituted for what I had on hand - green beans. The recipe works really well with those too. This is definitely going on the meal plan.

PUL Team - July 22, 2022, 6:18 p.m.

Mmm green beans sound delicious! We're so thrilled the stir fry was enjoyed 🙂

Jasmine - July 1, 2022, 2:16 a.m.

This is super tasty and super easy to make! Definitely going into my rotation of foods!
I made it for a dinner party, and my friends also enjoyed it as much as I did!

PUL Team - July 1, 2022, 8:24 p.m.

So nice of you to make it for the dinner party! We're so glad it was enjoyed,
Jasmine 🙂

Deborah - June 26, 2022, 5:59 p.m.

Mmmm! Easy to make and super tasty. Definitely making this again!

Lisa Marie - June 25, 2022, 5:22 p.m.

My family and I are not vegan or vegetarian but I tried a modified version of this recipe and we absolutely loved it. I have some exposure to eating tofu but didn't enjoy it at all, I love your youtube content so I decided to try out the recipe. I also enjoy that I don't feel out of place watching your content. It is a pleasurable experience watching your content and inspires me to eat more sustainably.
I wish there was a photo option to show how great it turned out! I'll head back to your no-bake desserts now. Ciao!

PUL Team - June 27, 2022, 3:48 a.m.

Hey Lisa, aw thank YOU for the very kind words and ongoing support - it means so much! We love to see creations on Instagram with the tag #pickuplimes or @pickuplimes if that's accessible for you. Enjoy the desserts🤗

Lisa Marie Evans - April 7, 2023, 1:02 a.m.

☺️ I’m back to pass the recipe on to friends but I’m so happy to see your response. I will most definitely tag a photo the next time I make this dish. Fun Fact: I made this for my nephews and their friend, LOVED IT! They had no idea it was tofu and they finished the whole thing, seconds and thirds.

Cat - June 20, 2022, 2:53 a.m.

This meal was fantastic. Enjoyed it immensely and super easy to make.

Lauren - June 14, 2022, 9:56 p.m.

My husband and I love this! It works well with other veggies too :)

Lucie R - June 14, 2022, 8 p.m.

Wow- this is so tasty. I think this is the best sweet and sour recipe I’ve ever tasted. Plus it’s the first time we made tofu tast good! Thank you so much for this recipe

PUL Team - June 16, 2022, 6:38 a.m.

Oh my gosh we're incredibly grateful to hear, Lucie - what a huge compliment!

Freya - June 12, 2022, 6:41 a.m.

I've made this recipe probably upwards of 10 times. Before this, I had no idea you could make a healthy sweet and sour at home. SO tasty, and the leftovers make a mean lunch at work. Great job PUL team.

PUL Team - June 15, 2022, 7:52 p.m.

Woohoo! We're incredibly grateful it's being enjoyed and you've taken the time to share the kind words, Freya 🤗

Mireia - June 11, 2022, 9:26 p.m.

I've made it so many times and every time i fall in love with it!!

Sara - June 11, 2022, 5:35 p.m.

My boyfriend is just obsessed with this recipe!! He basically brings it up every week and asks if we can make it which sometimes makes me regret I ever showed it to him hahah 😂 But it truly is delicious - I never thought homemade sweet sour sauce can taste so good.

Thank you for all your amazing recipes - they're such an inspiration and they make cooking so much fun!

PUL Team - June 15, 2022, 3:58 a.m.

Aw we're so happy the stir fry is being enjoyed, Sara! Thank you for being here and for supporting PUL 🤗

Erica - June 9, 2022, 6:20 p.m.

I love all the tofu recipes. Keep 'em comin! It's nice to have different sauces to enjoy over tofu to mix it up and this one does not disappoint. Restaurant quality in my opinion.

PUL Team - June 10, 2022, 11:17 p.m.

We do hope to share more tofu recipes soon, Erica! Such a big compliment - thank you ☺️

Jen - May 30, 2022, 10:08 p.m.

I’m eating it right now! My flavor profile is tangy and this hits the spot. The only things I’ll change for next time is the oil (I’ve never been too keen on canola) and I’d cook the tofu a bit longer.

PUL Team - May 31, 2022, 5:44 a.m.

Thanks for sharing, Jen, we appreciate it to help PUL improve. Enjoy the tofu 😃

Alex - May 14, 2022, 5:08 p.m.

Loved it!

Monica - May 5, 2022, 3:12 a.m.

I liked the sauce and veggies. I cooked the tofu in a cast iron skillet (I don't have a nonstick pan) and it was a mess. If I make this again I will cook the tofu following the instructions in the "spicy garlic wok noodles" recipe and add more veggies.

PUL Team - May 6, 2022, 12:25 a.m.

Hey Monica, thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us! It super valuable to help PUL improve so we've noted it down. We do recommend a non-stick pan or adding oil to help prevent sticking 🙂

Nina - April 25, 2022, 9:41 p.m.

I loved this recipe! I'm recovering from anorexia and pul is really helpful. PUL has my trust regarding nutrition ❤️

PUL Team - April 26, 2022, 4:41 p.m.

Oh, Nina, it means so much. Wishing you an abundance of health and wellness on your journey ❣️

Rachel - April 6, 2022, 7:31 p.m.

This is absolutely the best homemade sweet and sour recipe I have tried! Perfect!

PUL Team - April 7, 2022, 12:25 a.m.

A massive compliment, Rachel, thank you!

vlada - April 5, 2022, 9:31 a.m.

You are absolutely genius! Wow!

Marisol - March 30, 2022, 2:14 a.m.

It was delicious! Thank you so much for doing this for all of us eating more plants.😊

PUL Team - March 30, 2022, 3:58 a.m.

Awe it means so much, Marisol, thank you ☺️

Juliette - March 27, 2022, 2:30 p.m.

Didn't understand it was the canned pineapple juice so I put pineapple juice from a bottle and didn't have pineapple so I used canned Peaches and it was very good. Didn't put tomato paste but it was ok without it.
Nevertheless I plan to cook the recipe with the ingredients you prescribed and can't wait to taste it .
Thank you for giving so good ideas to cook tofu
Be blessed

PUL Team - March 27, 2022, 9:30 p.m.

Hey Juliette, thanks for the insight on the modifications! Apologies for any confusion with the juice. We hope you enjoy the recipe next time as well 😃

John Martinez - March 8, 2022, 1:05 a.m.

This was delicious. It was a last minute decision and we were short ingredients. We didn't have maple syrup, pineapple or Bell pepper. We ended up substituting grapefruit and orange juice for the pineapple, honey for maple syrup, and green beans for the bell pepper. It has such a great flavor.

PUL Team - March 10, 2022, 7:52 a.m.

Thanks for sharing your experience with this one, John, we're so glad it was enjoyed 😃

Britany - Feb. 28, 2022, 5:38 a.m.

So delicious, but not as sweet as I normally expect from sweet and sour tofu. Still, very yummy and satisfying.

PUL Team - Feb. 28, 2022, 8:08 p.m.

Thank you for the feedback, Britany! The syrup used can make a difference in this one so perhaps adding more syrup, such as half a tbsp, may be desired 😊

Kristen - Feb. 23, 2022, 1:28 a.m.

I really love everything I have made from your website and this is no exception! Even my eight year old loved it and that is saying a lot! Was delicious and hit the spot! Thanks!

PUL Team - Feb. 23, 2022, 7:36 a.m.

A massive compliment, Kristen, thank YOU 😊

Susan - Feb. 17, 2022, 5:07 p.m.

Love this recipe and how simple it is to make yet has such a flavour full sweet and sour sauce. This will be a regular meal in our house!

PUL Team - Feb. 19, 2022, 1:51 a.m.

Oh, Susan, we appreciate the glowing review! Thank you :)

Levina - Feb. 7, 2022, 9:18 a.m.

We love the taste, thankyou for making this recipe ❤️ and I love this website more, there's plate portion info and nourish your cell and mind info

PUL Team - Feb. 8, 2022, 7:18 p.m.

So happy to hear the positive feedback, Levina, it means so much 🌻

imsen - Feb. 6, 2022, 1:57 p.m.

Thank you, this was beautiful although we wanted more sauce with the rice as the soy etc were sucked up by the other ingredients!

PUL Team - Feb. 6, 2022, 9:19 p.m.

Thanks for sharing your experience with it, Imsen, it's so appreciated to help us improve 😊

emily - Feb. 2, 2022, 12:11 a.m.

could you replace the pineapple juice with anything?

PUL Team - Feb. 2, 2022, 8 a.m.

Hey Emily, another juice such as orange can be used to add a touch of sweetness. We've also had positive reviews with omitting the juice and adding extra fruit 😊

Martyna - Jan. 24, 2022, 12:27 a.m.

I LOVE this recipe!!

I've made a bunch of times and shamefully am only writing a review now.

I'd make this every week if I could. It's REALLY tasty and it also hits the spot if you're craving a Chinese takeaway.

My top tips are:
- Have a pot that is relatively non-stick to fry the tofu in. The ceramic coating is worn down on my old pot and I used to have to use a lot more oil than stated to complete that step of the recipe
- I don't whisk the ingredients for the sauce, I like to use an old jam jar - much easier to just shake it all up
- I usually cook the onions, carrots, bell pepper for a bit longer than the recipe states - this is a personal preference but I'm sure that this means that a lot of nutritional content of the veggies is lost in the process

Thank you Pick Up Limes for a fabulous recipe!

PUL Team - Jan. 26, 2022, 6:04 a.m.

Oh, Martyna, thank YOU for taking the time to share the kind words and insight. Love all of the tips 🤗

Max - Jan. 20, 2022, 7:30 p.m.

The best sweet and sour recipe for sure! 👍

A huge compliment, Max!

Rayen - Jan. 16, 2022, 2 p.m.

I somehow stumbled onto your website, and boy am I glad I did!! I made this dish last night and loved it. Tomato paste?! I was skeptical but keep the faith (obviously I had no clue!) and to say it was gobbled up by my little family, would be an understatement. Keep up the awesome work. Thank you!!

PUL Team - Jan. 16, 2022, 8:23 p.m.

Awe it means so much, Rayen, thank you! So glad the stir fry was enjoyed 😊

Anna - Jan. 14, 2022, 7:21 p.m.

So thrilled to hear, Rebecca! Sending love back to Canada 💚

Evelien - Jan. 6, 2022, 10:17 a.m.

Love this recipe, cooked it many many times. Sometimes I use tofu but otherwise I use my home made seitan. I'm not the biggest tofu fan but with this preperation I aqtually like it. I cooked this recipe for many friends as well and everybody likes it :) I tried many recipies on this website but this one is my favorite :)

PUL Team - Jan. 6, 2022, 10:04 p.m.

Mmm seitan is a lovely idea, Evelien! We're so glad the recipe is being enjoyed ✨

Sophie - Jan. 4, 2022, 7:03 a.m.

A lovely idea, Mia!

Joi - Dec. 30, 2021, 6:08 p.m.

Asked myself so often, how to make a sweet and sour sauce, that tastes like from a restaurant. And thats it! Will be one of my go-tos since now.

PUL Team - Dec. 31, 2021, 6:09 a.m.

Awe we're so happy it's being enjoyed, Joi!

Laura - Dec. 30, 2021, 11:20 a.m.

PUL Team - Dec. 30, 2021, 4:40 p.m.

Oh, Laura, that's incredible! We're so glad the stir fry is being enjoyed 🙂

Michelle S - Dec. 28, 2021, 11:19 p.m.

I forgot to take a picture. It was 10/10 GOOD! Even my nonvegan kids loved it. I rarely like the tofu I make. I couldn’t get enough of it. I’m excited for leftovers

PUL Team - Dec. 30, 2021, 4:29 a.m.

A massive compliment, Michelle, thanks so much! Enjoy the leftovers 😃

Alana - Dec. 27, 2021, 7:32 a.m.

Made this dish tonight and it was excellent! I used firm not extra firm but it turn out just fine after I drained all the water from it. Taste was tangy and sweet! I especially liked the red onions in it. I will definitely be making this again!

PUL Team - Dec. 27, 2021, 11:13 p.m.

Awe we're so happy to hear, Alana, thanks a bunch for taking the time to share 🤗

Lizzie - Dec. 23, 2021, 1:54 p.m.

Love this dish!!

LoesLoes - Dec. 17, 2021, 12:31 p.m.

I love this recipe ! Eating it right now :D

It tastes even better when it is the next day or from the freezer.
the flavours develop. It is sweet, sour, salty..perfect mix of all flavours

PUL Team - Dec. 20, 2021, 9:06 p.m.

We appreciate this so much, Loes, enjoy!

Isobelle - Dec. 13, 2021, 3:32 p.m.

Delicious and surprisingly easy! I tried this tonight and was impressed with how authentic the sweet & sour sauce was to similar meat dishes. I've been struggling finding good tofu recipes but this will absolutely become a staple from now on! Thank you PUL 😃

PUL Team - Dec. 14, 2021, 4:53 a.m.

We're so happy to hear, Isobelle, thank you! It's one of our favourites 🤩

Sophia - Dec. 4, 2021, 8:25 a.m.

Hey there 😊 I absolutely love your website and all of your Videos - I’ve tried many of your recipes and they have all been soooo good!! Absolutely loving it!
I would like to try this recipe again for my family, but my brother is allergic to pineapple - can I substitute it with something else or can I leave it out? Thanks in advance and keep up your amazing work 🤗

PUL Team - Dec. 4, 2021, 10:37 p.m.

Hi Sophia, thanks a bunch for the kind words - it means so much 🥰 Feel free to omit the pineapple chunks and use another sweeter juice, such as orange juice instead of the pineapple juice! If sweet chunks are desired, we've heard positive reviews with canned peaches, although perhaps mango, kiwi, or papaya are other ideas to replace the pineapple chunks. Do let us know how it goes 😃

Nimbusaeta - Nov. 12, 2021, 6:05 p.m.

It's easy to make and delicious :3 I've done it a few times already!

Ellen - Nov. 11, 2021, 10:38 p.m.

Such a delicious recipe! I love all the flavors in this dish and it comes together surprisingly easily. My only critique is that the recipe does not indicate if one should press the tofu before starting the recipe. I always press mine and have great results, but the one time my sister made this recipe, she didn't press and had more of a sweet n sour scramble.

PUL Team - Nov. 12, 2021, 4:39 a.m.

Hey Ellen, thanks so much for the feedback - it really helps us improve! We've updated the instructions to indicate "pressed" :)

Madalina Sacultanu - Nov. 10, 2021, 6:20 p.m.

I love sweet and sour sauce, so this one was a must try! It was so delicious that it became a regular in our house. Super simple ingredients and super easy to make, I highly recommend it. Makes great leftovers too!

We're so grateful to hear, Madalina, thank you 😊

We appreciate this so much, Romy! Hope you enjoy the Aloo Matar as well ☺️

Hannah - Oct. 11, 2021, 10:48 a.m.

I tried this recipe because I had all of the ingredients at home. It was so delicious and very easy to make after cooking it a few times now! A new favourite :)

PUL Team - Oct. 11, 2021, 11:03 p.m.

Aw this means so much, Hannah, so glad the stir fry was enjoyed ✨

PUL Team - Sept. 26, 2021, 6:44 p.m.

So happy the stir fry was enjoyed, Laura, thank you 😃

Ester - Sept. 22, 2021, 10:12 a.m.

Tried this recipe yesterday and it was easy and delicious. Only downside is the serving size. I used 4 servings and it was just enough for the 2 of us for dinner.

Kelsey - Sept. 19, 2021, 4:37 a.m.

So delicious! Fairly simple to make too, definitely weeknight friendly. I was very impressed by the flavour - like restaurant quality! I will definitely be making this again, and probably regularly

PUL Team - Sept. 20, 2021, 3:52 p.m.

We appreciate this so much, Kelsey, thank you!

Pasindi - Sept. 6, 2021, 12:04 p.m.

so easy 10/10!!! would recommend, green onions are a must :P

Clara - Sept. 4, 2021, 11:17 p.m.

This has to be one of my favourite recipes 😍 I have made it so many times and the dish never disappoints ! The flavour combination is the best !! My mum (who eats meat) has also tried it and everytime she says that it tastes like a regular dish at an Asian restaurant ! It is seriously sooo good and I cannot wait to cook it many more times. Thanks a lot !

PUL Team - Sept. 5, 2021, 3:17 a.m.

Awe, Clara, you're much too kind! It means so much. Thank you for taking the time to share the glowing review 😊

Clare - Aug. 30, 2021, 2:31 p.m.

Although not my favorite flavor profile, it was still quite good!

Charlotte - Aug. 28, 2021, 11:19 a.m.

Amazing!! I added a spoon of gochujang for some heat. Not traditional but delish

PUL Team - Aug. 28, 2021, 11:14 p.m.

Mmm lovely idea, Charlotte, thank you!

Luci - Aug. 21, 2021, 5:51 p.m.

Loved this recipe! Took leftovers to work and had several colleagues ask about it! I might try halving the maple syrup next time, since it’s plenty sweet, but it’s pretty perfect as is.

Mika B - Aug. 20, 2021, 8:50 a.m.

Definitely on par with the spicy garlic tofu recipe you have on here! I used Chinese cooking wine instead of rice vinegar since I didn't want to use the white vinegar I had and it turned out great!!

I also cut up some chilies to put in the sauce cuz I love the spice and it works well with it too.

Will surely be a staple among other dishes to cook every other week. :D

PUL Team - Aug. 23, 2021, 9:16 p.m.

Mmm sounds so lovely, Mika, thanks for sharing your experience with this one!

Adriel - Aug. 17, 2021, 8:29 p.m.

Hi! I've been making a few of your recipes and I've loved every single one! However, I do not suggest swapping cornstarch for arrowroot starch for this recipe. It turned into a gooey mess on the stove. Maybe it was the mixture of the soy sauce and arrowroot. Not entirely sure! Anything corn related is harmful to my digestive system so I tried the switch, but I regret it now. I'm sure it's very tasty with the cornstarch though. Just a heads up for anyone wanting to try the arrowroot. Don't do it!

Adriel - Aug. 18, 2021, 4:40 p.m.

So I tried it once more, and instead of mixing the soy sauce with tofu and arrowroot starch in the bowl, I cooked the tofu and arrowroot until crispy. Once crispy, I added the soy sauce to the cooked tofu and let it marinate a few minutes. The whole meal turned out perfect that time!

Keep up the delicious recipes! 🥰

PUL Team - Aug. 19, 2021, 6:28 p.m.

Hey Adriel, I'm happy to hear you've found a way of preparing that worked for you 😊 thanks for being open to trying it again, and thanks for sharing your feedback! 🥰

Asha - Sept. 26, 2021, 10:33 a.m.

I used arrowroot! On a hot, heavily oiled cast iron pan it started to turn into the gooey mess, but out of panic I tossed it into a cool un-oiled non-stick, continued to cook and it turned out as crispy as ever :)

Denelle - Aug. 16, 2021, 7:39 a.m.

I throughly enjoyed this recipe. I swapped the rice vinegar for white wine vinegar because that was what I had on hand and it was still delicious! Amazing bold flavour and loved the pineapple it really made the dish perfect :)

PUL Team - Aug. 17, 2021, 5:32 a.m.

Thank you for sharing the substitute, Denelle! So glad you enjoyed the recipe 😊

Anna - Aug. 15, 2021, 9:04 p.m.

This is one of my all time favourites! The flavours in the sweet and sour sauce are amazing and the tofu is the best I’ve ever had! Thank you for all the great recipes :)

Anne - Aug. 15, 2021, 12:39 p.m.

Love this recipe! Easy to make and sooo good! 😁

John McCullough - Aug. 14, 2021, 12:02 a.m.

A meal my son ask me to make at least once a week.

Nadin - Aug. 13, 2021, 7:25 p.m.

So easy and SO DELICIOUS! Definitely to be repeated very soon, thank you so much for sharing!

Sarah - Aug. 13, 2021, 10:42 a.m.

This is my favorite recipe! I've done it so many times and I still want more!

Nirvana - Aug. 12, 2021, 5:08 a.m.

I can't believe how easy this was to make! This dish was absolutely delicious and got my whole family raving about my "restaurant quality" cooking. If you're like me and you always browse through the comments before deciding to make a dish, let this be your sign — make it!

PUL Team - Aug. 12, 2021, 4:12 p.m.

Aww love the sign to make it 🤓 So glad you enjoyed the stir fry, Nirvana!

Marloes - Aug. 5, 2021, 3:21 p.m.

This recipe is easy to make. My husband is a fan of pilav and this reminded me of the traditional dish we normally make. This recipe is better in my opinion as it is vegan and delicious!

Laura - Aug. 3, 2021, 6:10 p.m.

This is one of my favourite PUL recipes. I find myself making it all of the time. I never even thought it possible to make sweet and sour sauce.

Aleksandra Jonczak - July 30, 2021, 2:24 a.m.

This is one of these meals I think of quite often. I've been looking for a sweet & sour tofu recipe for a while, then I found you, and everything's been better ever since! Thank you for your amazing recipes. Every single one I made (and I ALWAYS came back to them too) was delicious!

PUL Team - Aug. 1, 2021, 8:30 a.m.

We appreciate this so much, Aleksandra, and are so happy you're enjoyed the recipe 🤩

Jess - July 28, 2021, 7:01 p.m.

Loved this recipe! This even got my spouse who is a tofu skeptic on board!! The sauce is perfect, not too sweet or sour. It so easy to put together. I didn’t have a bell pepper but had plenty of zucchini from the garden, so we added that to the stir fry and it was great. Love the new website and how you can scale recipes up or down. Can’t wait to try more PUL recipes!

PUL Team - July 29, 2021, 6:46 p.m.

Thank you for the lovely review and feedback, Jess, it's so appreciated! Happy cooking ☺️💚

Julia - July 26, 2021, 6:21 a.m.

It seriously blows my mind that this is a budget recipe because it is mouth-watering and everyone one of my friends that tried it LOVED it. The sweet n sour sauce with the pineapple juice is just - m'wah, chefs kiss! This method of cooking tofu is also so versatile for any tofu dish, this is one of the main ways I prep my tofu now - thanks Sadia and the team! I saw the (amazing) new changes to the website and wanted to make sure everyone knew that these recipes were bomb so I thought I'd communicate to fellow home cooks :)

PUL Team - July 27, 2021, 7:40 p.m.

Aw you're too sweet, Julia! We're so glad you enjoyed this one and you're enjoying the new website! It means so much 🤗

Anna - July 25, 2021, 8:55 p.m.

This recipe has changed how I make tofu for other dishes now too. So delicious! Thank you!

Rachael - July 25, 2021, 5:16 p.m.

Just make it - it’s amazing!!

Alicia G - July 25, 2021, 1:11 a.m.

I’ve made this twice now! My husband and I really love it! Great for leftovers, too! Waiting a day, the flavor got even richer. This recipe is so good!

PUL Team - July 26, 2021, 9:04 p.m.

We're so thrilled you're enjoying the stir fry, Alicia!

Arah - July 24, 2021, 1:39 p.m.

This sweet and sour is perfect! After I left Singapore I was constantly searching for a recipe that could satisfy my sweet/sour fix. This is the closest I’ve come, and it’s incredible!

PUL Team - July 25, 2021, 9:39 p.m.

So thrilled you're enjoying the stir fry, Arah! Thank you for sharing 🌻

Katie - July 23, 2021, 12:16 p.m.

As with moth of your recipes, simple and delicious! This one has that perfect tang you want in a sweet & sour dish! I also love it a little spicy, so a little added sirracha adds the perfect kick!

Grace - July 22, 2021, 7:46 p.m.

I've made this recipe several times since I first tried it and it's a winner every time! I usually only get three servings out of the recipe as written so I often make a double batch.

Mallory - July 21, 2021, 8:54 a.m.

This is one of our favorite indulging dinners and is even better when eating our. The balance in the sauce is what I love the most!

Annie - July 20, 2021, 7:05 a.m.

I absolutely adore the flavours of the sauce in this recipe. It's so easy to make! It's on high rotation at my place. Thanks, Sadia!

Jella - July 19, 2021, 7:11 p.m.

So tasty! This recipe has become one of my favorites! I love the sweet, sour and tangy flavor of this dish. I make it pretty often because it's so delicious!

Kato Dijckmans - July 18, 2021, 1:04 p.m.

Hi there!
Since I made this dish the first time, I absolutely fell in love with it. Not a fan of pineapple or ginger, but this recipe is still so good without them. I make it with extra carrots to make up for the ginger and pineapple. Thank you for introducing me to this, Sadia (and the PUL-team ofc)!

PUL Team - July 19, 2021, 7:08 a.m.

Hello, Kato! Thanks a bunch for taking the time to share this with us 😃

Kindred - July 15, 2021, 9:39 p.m.

I make this recipe often! It is mind blowing how good it is and easy too! The Pick Up Limes recipes truly neverrrr disappoint and I am a picky girl

I love this recipe so much, it has become one of my favorites!! It’s just super simple and delicious 😋

Eva - July 12, 2021, 5:53 p.m.

I absolutely love this recipe, I have made this, like, 8 times since it was posted because it is sooo good!
I will say that I never need the cornstarch in the sauce, because once I add the tofu, it already thickens everything quite a bit.
Somehow, I never have rice vinegar on hand, but fortunately it also works great with white balsamic vinegar, rosé balsamic vinegar or even lemon juice… or with canned peach instead of pineapple!

PUL Team - July 16, 2021, 3:38 a.m.

A huge thank you for taking the time to share your experience with the recipe, Eva! We're so glad you're enjoying this one 🤗

Sandra - July 11, 2021, 2:13 p.m.

I love this dish! I tried it out once and my husband and I have phases where we make it once a week.

Katherine Broberg - July 9, 2021, 7:41 p.m.

This is a staple for my family on cooler days. It’s definitely a challenge to get the tofu crispy without sticking to the pan, but totally worth the effort! I serve it just as you have it pictured which always make my kids go “ooooo!”

PUL Team - July 15, 2021, 3:02 a.m.

Ah your little ones sound adorable! So glad the crispy tofu is worth the labour of love 😃

L. - July 9, 2021, 3:06 a.m.

Even my meat and potatoes dad likes this recipe! It will be a part of my regular rotation.

Katka - July 9, 2021, 1:16 a.m.

This became a staple in our house (along with at least dozen of your recipes). My kids love it, my hubby loves it and everyone who tried it always asks for a recipe. Thanks for making vegan cooking easy and delicious. All the best form Vancouver!

Well Loved recipe and a big favorit in our House!

Caitlen - July 8, 2021, 9:46 p.m.

I was quite uncertain before trying out this recipe, only because I never realized one could get a good sweet and sour sauce at home? But it was soooo much better than the jar sauces I would often get! And so easy too. Absolute fave. :)

PUL Team - July 12, 2021, 5:33 a.m.

Thank you for the glowing review, Caitlen! We appreciate it so much 💖

Prisca - July 8, 2021, 7:54 p.m.

One of my absolute favorites! Super easy to make, also as a prep meal! Nice to enjoy for dinner, but what a treat when opening my to-go box for a quick lunch at work :)

So delicious! I could eat this every night!!

pats - June 26, 2021, 6:03 p.m.

i made this one with canned peaches instead and it still turned out delicious!! as everything from you :)

PUL Team - June 27, 2021, 2:29 a.m.

Mmm love the idea of peaches! So glad to hear, Pats 🤗

Tridha - June 12, 2021, 9:04 a.m.

This recipe is insanely delicious!! I subbed and omitted a few things because I didn’t have them in my pantry. I added 1/4 cup orange juice instead of pineapple and omitted the pineapple chunks in the recipe. I also added a half tbsp more of maple syrup to balance the sweetness. And since I didn’t have any tomato paste on hand, I subbed it with tomato sauce. All of these alterations worked and the end product was so scrumptious.

PUL Team - June 13, 2021, 12:29 a.m.

Love how you adapted the recipe to what you had available, Tridha! Thank you for sharing :D

Cris S - June 5, 2021, 3:45 p.m.

This was stunning! :D

Katarina - June 1, 2021, 3:56 a.m.

So glad you enjoyed the tofu, Katarina! Lots of warm wishes back to Vancouver 🥰

Sarah - May 31, 2021, 9:15 p.m.

Oo lovely serving ideas, Sarah! Thank you for the review 🤗

This is such an easy and delicious meal. My family is full of meat eaters, but everyone loved it. I could eat this fried tofu as a snack all the time. Thank you for the recipe!

We're so glad you and your family enjoyed the tofu, Pavla! So incredible 😃

I now make this a staple in my house and cook it weekly! I also add some extra veggies such as broccoli and only use half an onion. And I cannot eat enough of this meal! Thank you as always Sadia ❤️

Woohoo! So happy you're enjoying this one, Jessica, thank YOU ✨🥰

Absolutely delicious!
I made this recipe with a few substitutions:
vegan sausages instead of tofu.
pasta sauce and ketchup instead of tomato paste
And apple cider vinegar instead of rice vinegar
Still turned out great regardless, will definitely be making this one again.

Super creative substitutes, Leigh! So glad you enjoyed the dish 🤩

Deepa - April 5, 2021, 3:38 p.m.

I was so surprised by how simple this recipe was! I ended up not having pineapple juice, so I ended up letting a few pieces of my frozen pineapple sit in the glaze for a bit, not sure if it did anything but still tasted great!

My only issue was getting the tofu to really crisp up and not get slimy with the cornstarch. Still figuring out how to get it to not all stick to my pan, but next time I think I'll try a touch less cornstarch and a different cooking oil.

Overall, SUCH a good recipe. I can't wait to eat it throughout the week!

Hi Deepa, awesome to hear about the pineapple chunks 🍍 Using a non-stick pan, lowering the heat a bit, and adding a touch more oil may help the tofu not stick to the pan. For getting the cornstarch to work its magic, letting the mixture sit at a gentle simmer for longer may help as well! So happy you enjoyed the recipe despite this 😀

Tonight was my third time making this recipe and it's still a crowd favorite! I have started to make one edit- I use orange juice instead of pineapple juice and I just leave the pineapple out. I found that the orange juice has the same zip and is easier to find in the grocery store for me. Leftovers of this recipe keep extremely well. I am not vegan or vegetarian, but I enjoy trying Sadia's recipes and I am getting better at cooking tofu!

Mmm orange juice is a lovely idea, Chloe! Thanks so much for sharing 😃
