Main

Nasi pecel is a beloved Javanese dish featuring steamed rice ("nasi") and pecel: blanched vegetables topped with a creamy peanut sauce made with roasted peanuts, tamarind, garlic, and chili. Mildly spiced, slightly sweet, and irresistibly aromatic, the sauce perfectly complements the soft rice and crunchy vegetables. Often served with rempeyek (crispy peanut crackers), nasi pecel is a satisfying meal you'll instantly love.

Couldn't buy Ketjap in the supermarket (UK) and overall it was very bland

Hi Wiesje! Thanks so much for giving this recipe a try. Did you simply omit the ketjap, or did you happen to swap it for anything else? Ketjap manis is pretty key to the flavour of this one, so we can imagine the sauce may have tasted bland without it.

If you can’t find ketjap manis, you can mix soy sauce with sugar (like maple syrup or brown sugar) for a similar sweet-savoury flavour. We’d recommend giving the sauce a taste and adjusting as you go, as the flavour will shift slightly with the swap. We hope you enjoy the next app recipe more 🫶✨

Thanks for the tip! We left the ketjap out and added some more tamarind and some water, but it definitely needed something sweet.

We also couldn't get the texture quite right in our food processor.. the satay sauce wasn't really sauce, more just small bits of peanut... Which was a shame cause stay sauce is usually my favourite part!
