When I want to feel warm and cozy from the inside out, I drink a mug of spiced apple cider. The taste of juicy apples reminds me of crisp fall afternoons. Simmering a pot of this on the stove instantly makes the home smell fragrant. The cardamon, ginger, and cinnamon are inviting spices, filled with nutritious antioxidants.
It's just goodness all around.
And if your days aren't grey and cold, add in sparkling water to make delicious sparkling apple cider that can be enjoyed in the spring or summer months. It's festive enough for any occasion!
For presentation: add a pop of colour by adding in fresh cranberries or orange slices!
Flavour burst spiced apple cider - two ways
▸ ▹ Vegan, gluten-free, oil-free, refined sugar-free, nut-free, one-pot
Yield: 4-6 servings
Prep Time: 2 min
Cook Time: 10 min
Total Time: 12 min
1 L unfiltered apple juice
2 cinnamon sticks, broken into 2-3 pieces
5 cardamom pods, cut in half
1 inch knob of ginger, sliced into rounds
In a small pot on medium-high heat, add all the ingredients until the cider comes to a gentle boil.
Reduce the heat to medium-low for another 3 minutes to allow the spices to infuse more flavour.
Strain the cider while pouring it into a mug to remove the pieces of cinnamon and cardamom. Enjoy while warm.
Follow the above steps 1-3, but let cool in the fridge or at room temperature.
When cool, mix 2 parts cider to 1 part sparkling water, to make a sparkling apple cider.
Speed-it-up: you can use a microwave for this, although the spices will not be as strong.
Slow-it-down: you can also add all the ingredients to a container and let it steep in the fridge overnight.
Flavours: try simmering with fresh cranberries or orange slices. Garnish with fresh mint or raspberries.
