Sometimes it feels like in order to eat healthy we have to dedicate most of our waking hours to meal planning, grocery shopping, learning how to cook, and spending all of our time in the kitchen slaving over a hot oven or stove. It doesn't help that many reality TV shows display top chefs that prepare elaborate meals in exquisite kitchens… we often feel that in order to do the same, we have to have the same skill level and kitchen appliances.
But eating a wholesome breakfast does not have to become complicated. In fact, in under five minutes you can make a healthy breakfast and morning snack that'll last you until lunch.
A friend once taught me this acronym: K.I.S.S.
It stands for: keep it simple, stupid.
Now, I'm not saying to call yourself "stupid". Rather, to make note of the fact the we can often act foolish by over-complicating things unnecessarily.
I really believe K.I.S.S. can be the case with breakfast.
If you feel you don't have the time because you have to rush out the door to get to work or school, then keep it to the basics.
As a dietitian and nutritionist, I'm always recommending fibre, fibre, fibre for breakfast. This can be in the form of whole grains, nuts and seeds, and especially fruits and vegetables. I also recommend having about 1-2 Tbsp of ground flaxseeds, chia seeds, hemp hearts, or walnuts for a healthy dose of omega-3 fats.
