Floral, tart, crisp. That’s how I would describe this tea. It has a depth of flavour that keeps you sipping and re-filling your cup for more. What I think I love about it most is that it would calm your nerves on a chilly autumn day, but could also serve to entertain your friends at a summer patio or high tea party. Just look at the vibrant colours... I mean c’mon!
It’s also just three simple ingredients. Beats buying the expensive stuff from those specialty tea stores. The aroma and taste on your palate can’t possibly compare to the ‘artificial flavours’ they add to the packaged alternative.
So now that I’m sipping on my fragrant, freshly steeped tea, I’ll teach you the five simple steps you need to follow to make your own! Let’s begin:
Step 1: Slice apples into thin strips or chop them up into small little bits.
Step 2: Add rose petals and the apples to your pot.
Step 3: Add hot water.
Step 4: Allow the tea to brew for 5-10 minutes, preferably on the stove at a low-medium heat to keep it hot.
Step 5: Add apple cider vinegar at the end.
That’s it! How easy was that? If you’d like, you can add a touch of sweetener but I find the apples and apple cider vinegar give it a natural sweetness.
Dietitian's Intermission: for years there has been hype around the weight loss and health benefits of vinegars. A review of over 70 research articles suggests some evidence that vinegars can help to reduce high blood glucose (sugar) and high lipid (fat) levels in the blood, and also help to regulate obesity and satiety (feeling of fullness). However, the use of vinegars as a complementary treatment for individuals with glucose and lipid abnormalities is cautioned, as several studies show no benefit to its addition. It's clear that more extensive clinical studies are needed to validate the purported health claims.
In any case, increasing fluid intake is a common recommendation for those who may mistake thirst for hunger. I can also guarantee drinking a home-made tea is a superior choice to a can of pop or sugary drink between meals. Whether to quench your thirst, tantalize your taste buds, or pose potential health benefits, I say: drink up!
Floral Rose Apple Tea
▸ ▹ Vegan, gluten-free, oil-free, soy-free, refined sugar-free, nut-free
Yield: 4 cups (1 litre)
Prep Time: 2 min
Brew Time: 5 min
Total Time: 7 min
3 Tbsp (5 g) dried red rose petals
1 apple, cored, thinly sliced or coarsely chopped
1 Tbsp (15 mL) apple cider vinegar
4 cups (1 L) water
Add the apple and rose petals to a pot and pour in 1 L of boiling water.
Allow to simmer on the stove for 5-10 minutes, or brew with a lid to ensure the heat doesn't escape.
Add the apple cider vinegar at the end. Sweeten if desired and enjoy!
