Ingredients

  • 4
    Medjool dates, pits removed
  • 1½ cups (360 mL)
    canned light coconut milk
  • ½ cup (120 mL)
    unsweetened soy milk
  • 1 tsp (2 g)
    matcha powder

Directions

  1. Add all of the ingredients to a high-speed blender and blend until smooth*.
  2. Transfer the mixture to a saucepan on medium-high heat and stir continuously.
  3. When hot, but not boiling*, remove from heat and pour into your desired cups. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Nutrition tip: aim to use plant-based milk that is fortified with calcium.
  • * Note the dates are used to provide natural sweetness, but they also add a slight graininess to the drink. For a smoother texture, add maple syrup instead, and simply add all the ingredients straight into the saucepan.
  • ** Boiling matcha can cause it to taste bitter.

Storage

  • Best to enjoy this drink immediately.

Today I learned that canned coconut milk (or probably coconut milk in general) is not up my alley... The recipe was pretty good though, I will try it again in the future with a different kind of milk!

Delicious! Ultra rich and creamy! I made the 1 serving recipe and cut down a bit on the dates and next time would use a little less of the recommended coconut milk as well because it came out too sweet for me. I used oat milk so not sure if that added to the creaminess even more. To reduce the graininess of the dates I poured the warmed mixture through a sieve and that worked perfectly! But overall, love the combination of ingredients and taste. A keeper for sure!

Hey Tuyet, thanks so much for sharing your experience with the latte! Indeed oat milk can impact the taste and creaminess. We're so glad it was still enjoyed 😃

Would love to make this as well as some of your other Matcha drinks but can you recommend a brand of matcha to use, as you had specific instructions on the type of marcha to use. Thank you.

Hi there, Pam! In general, opting for a premium grade or ceremonial grade matcha works best for drinks like this, compared to cooking grade matcha. It can be a personal choice, though, as some prefer certain brands to others. We got our ceremonial grade matcha by recommendation from a friend from "Matcha Oishii" 🍵

OMG!!! This is so amazing! The sweetness from the dates and the earthiness and the bitterness from the matcha combined with the creaminess of the coconut milk makes this an absolute treat! Thank you guys for sharing!

So happy to hear, Margaret, thank you 🙂

To keep the matcha from becoming scorched, heat the milks and then add to blender with the matcha and dates. just be sure the lid is on tightly :)

Hey Sarah, thanks for taking the time to share. Hot liquid can cause pressure in blenders so kindly be careful as the lid may pop off! The hot liquid may also damage some parts of blenders but we're glad it worked for you 🙂

I'm enjoying this matcha right now, for breakfast. It's super sweet and I love it ❤️ Using dates as a natural sweetener is such a great idea!

So glad it's being enjoyed, Martunia!

This recipe is delicious! Admittedly, I'd never had matcha before I made this, so I don't have anything to compare it to, but I thought the result was comforting, cozy, and just the right amount of sweet. My decision to give this a go was spontaneous (was given a bag of matcha powder and got curious), so I didn't have coconut OR soy milk on hand, but I made it entirely with almond milk and still thought it was wonderful. Thanks for this treat!!

Aw so happy to hear, Emily, and how exciting to be your first matcha recipe! Thank you 🤗

Wahou! My mind is blown! This is such a good drink! I'm used to having matcha with different milks and drink it already on a day-to-day basis but this recipe made it soo creamy. It's like hug. I will definitely make this a weekend staple!!

PUL Team - Nov. 17, 2021, 1:21 a.m.

Such a lovely compliment, Maëlle, thank you for taking the time to share the review ✨

One of my favorite, most-used recipes from your site. I got into a habit of making these every Friday for my end-of-the-week treat (in replacement of what used to be my usual Starbucks chai tea latte). I haven't made them for a while now (been on a coffee kick), but I suspect I'll be back to making these again, soon (which will probably make the medjool date and coconut milk suppliers very happy...) These are delicious, creamy and just sweet enough (I reduce the amount of dates from 4 down to 2.)
